ENGINEERING UTILITIES 2

INTRODUCTION
MODULE 1:
INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE
DELIVERED BY:

ENGR. HADJI PEEJAY ARANDA

FACULTY – CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
UNIVERSITY OF THE EAST - CALOOCAN
INTRODUCTION

Engineering Utilities is a subject in the Civil
Engineering curriculum that covers the other
engineering discipline that are also present and
likewise important in building construction.

In other countries, Engineering Utilities is called
Building or Architectural Engineering.

The American Society of Civil Engineering has a
specialty division for this endeavor and it is known
as the Architectural Engineering
INTRODUCTION

Architectural engineering, also known as Building
engineering or architecture engineering, is an
engineering discipline that deals with the
technological aspects and multi-disciplinary
approach to planning, design, construction and
operation of buildings, such as analysis and
integrated design of environmental systems
(energy conservation, HVAC, plumbing, lighting,
fire protection, acoustics, vertical and horizontal
transportation), structural systems, behavior and
properties of building components and materials,
and construction management.
INTRODUCTION

Distinguished from architecture as an art of design,
architectural engineering, is the art and science of
engineering and construction as practiced in
respect of buildings.

The art in this definition should not only limited to
the development of Conceptual Design but
includes also the art of constructing the building.

The art of constructing involves being creative in
finding solutions to technical problems involved in
the construction of buildings
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
ARCHITECTURE AND
ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING

Architecture is both the process and the product of
planning, designing, and constructing buildings or
other structures.

Architectural engineering, is the art and science of
engineering and construction as practiced with
respect to buildings.

In the Philippine setting, both the field of
architecture and Civil Engineering have deep
involvement in architectural engineering and there
has been numerous overlap in the practice of both
professions
AREAS UNDER ARCHITECTURAL
ENGINEERING

The areas under Architectural Engineering are
listed as follows:
– STRUCTURAL DESIGN
– MECHANICAL
– ELECTRICAL
– PLUMBING
– COMMUNICATIONS
AREAS UNDER ARCHITECTURAL
ENGINEERING

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING is the art and
science of designing various structural elements of
the building that will resist various forces and
ensure that the structure will stand.

The resulting structural designs are integrated with
those of other designers such as architects and
building services engineers and often supervise the
construction of projects by contractors on site.
** Note
Building Services Engineers are the specialist
engineers that contributes to Building Engineering as
a whole
AREAS UNDER ARCHITECTURAL
ENGINEERING

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING is the branch of
engineering that is does the design as well as
implement mechanical systems.

Mechanical systems includes machinery,
ventilation, fire protection, air conditioning, and
conveyance within buildings.

In the context of Engineering Utilities, mechanical
systems are actually included except machinery
design but includes also machinery integration.
AREAS UNDER ARCHITECTURAL
ENGINEERING

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING is the branch of
engineering that is does the design as well as
implement electrical systems.

Electrical systems includes fixtures and appliances
as well as the ancillary equipments needed to
ensure the smooth operation

In the context of Engineering Utilities, electrical
systems are actually included and it also includes
Illumination as well as Fire Detection and
Suppression system
AREAS UNDER ARCHITECTURAL
ENGINEERING

PLUMBING is the discipline of designing pipes
needed to convey potable water to the building as
well as the piping system needed to convey waste
water out of the building.

Plumbing also includes the conveyance of
stormwater away from the building and draining it
properly.

Plumbing is wholly included in engineering utilities
and it is considered an important discipline to be
studied under the fields of Civil Engineering,
Architecture, Mechanical Engineering and Sanitary
Engineering
AREAS UNDER ARCHITECTURAL
ENGINEERING

COMMUNICATIONS ENGINEERING is the
discipline of designing and integrating components
that would facilitate communications as well as
improving electronic signals within a building

Communications engineering is also included in
engineering utilities specially in commercial
Buildings.

Communications engineering are commonly tasked
to design and implement intra communications
devices, Signal Enhancements, Fire Detection and
Suppression as well as building monitoring and
security systems
