Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

1.1 Introduction

Construction is a heavy manual industry where working into later life can

be a challenge. (Eaves, 2016). A construction worker typically works as a part

of a team on a construction site (such as building, home, or other structure).

(Payscale, 2018). There are other factors that indirectly contribute to the

problem.

Construction is one of the country’s most dangerous industries. Workers

face injuries from falls, electrocution, faulty equipment and more.

Being in the construction industry has its ups and downs along with a lot

of hard work. Construction workers must be tough, energetic and know

exactly what they are doing. They also need to get a lot of safety training.

That is what a day in the life of a construction worker can be. (Nackton, 2016)

Hence, the researchers have formulated questions that will serve as guides

in order to address the problem.

2

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the life of construction workers and how they

survive the risks in their job.

Specifically, this study aimed to answer the following questions:

1. What are the typical risks of being a construction worker?

2. What immediate response they exhibit, when an incident happened?

3. What are their precautions to protect them from the risk of their nature of

job?

1.3 Assumption

1. The construction workers are keeping their work areas clean and free of

debris to lessen the chances of injuries and prevent accidents such as slips,

trips and falls.

2. The typical risks that may occur in construction are working at height, sheer

volume of constantly moving vehicles such as supply vehicles and dumper

trucks maneuvering around the site.

3. The workers immediately report the hazards and accidents, including

incidents, on the head in charge in the site where it happened, do the first aid if

it is bearable or call an ambulance and rush it in the hospital nearby if it is

severe.
3

4. Some of the employers provides them a personal protective equipment that

they need to do the job safely. They must ask the head about what to do in an

emergency and where they keep the first aid kits. If their health and safety is at

risk, they immediately tell the head or the supervisor that they may not able to

do the job that they believe will put them in danger. They must also be aware

of their surroundings. Know, understand and follow the rules and regulations

in the workplace.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The significance of the study of this research was to determine the life of

a construction worker in terms of risk aspect in Sto. Tomas, Binan, Laguna.

For the students, that they may have knowledge on what a life of construction

worker is and how they survive the risks in their job in Sto. Tomas, Binan,

Laguna.

For the construction workers, that they may have an increased knowledge

on what a typical construction worker must be exactly like, and that they may

reconsider the responsibility of doing a lot of hard work especially to be aware

on the risks that may occur.

And lastly, for the future researchers, that this research may give more

information and knowledge on the life of construction worker in Sto. Tomas,

Binan, Laguna and find ways on preventing injuries in work and increase their

safety risks.
4

1.5 Scope and Delimitations

This study was conducted to gain knowledge about the life of a

construction worker and how they survive the risks in their job in Sto. Tomas,

Binan, Laguna. There had been five (5) workers gathered with at least five (5)

years of experience. The researchers didn’t include the high-quality job under

construction but only the lower class generally workers building houses, roads,

bridges, or etc.

1.6 Definition of Terms

 Precaution – is an action that is intended to prevent something dangerous

or unpleasant from happening.

 Demolition – the act of destroying something such as a building.

 Allocation – isan amount or portion of a resource assigned to a particular

recipient.

 Standpoint – a position from which objects are viewed and according to

which they are compared and judged.

 Paycheck – is the money that you regularly earn.

 Underrated – is someone that has skill but never gets recognition or a

chance to show it.

1.8 Conceptual Framework

The researchers prepare the interview sheets as well their selves and

proceed on finding construction workers that they will be going to interview in

the said barangay. As the process on going, they interview the picked

construction worker and ask some follow up question if they are not yet

satisfied to their answers. And as their output for their journey, the researchers

were able to get the data needed for their study.

1.9 Theoretical Framework

According to Safety and Health Magazine (2018), Commercial

construction leaders are concerned about higher safety risks resulting from a
6

shortage of skilled workers, according to the most recent results of a quarterly

survey conducted by USG Corp. and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

More than half of the respondents (58 percent) reported that workers with

insufficient skills are increasing safety risks, and 62 percent say those workers

will increase safety risks in the next three years.

Eighty percent of the respondents also said they are at least “moderately

concerned” about the skilled labor shortage’s effect on safety, with 26 percent

expressing “high or very high concern.”

Chapter II

Review of Related Literature

I. Job Description of a Construction Worker

According to Payscale (2018), a construction worker typically works as part of

a team on a construction site (such as for a building, home, or other structure).

This person may be responsible for a number of tasks, including carpentry,

demolition, drywall, finishing, and roofing. A construction worker’s hours

may vary depending on the needs at the job site; work is typically done during

the day and may involve difficult conditions such as extreme heat and cold.

Construction workers may work long days, weekends, and holidays,

depending on the job deadline.

A construction worker completes many tasks throughout the day; while some

construction workers specialize in a particular skill, many works as a “jack of

all trades.” Typical duties may include cleaning, sweeping, removing trash and

debris, and assisting other craft workers (including welders, carpenters,

fabricators, and carpenters). They may also assist with demolition, load and

unload building materials, distribute materials to appropriate areas, operate of

8

small tools, assist with machine maintenance, and operate equipment such as

jackhammers and torches.

A construction worker is also known as Construction Laborers. Construction

laborers handle many of the physically demanding tasks on construction sites.

Most of the time, a construction worker is not required to receive formal

education, although some attend trade schools and classes to receive

certification for various skills. This work is almost always physical in nature,

and employees must be able to work on their feet for their entire shift. It is

important for construction workers to be punctual, as most of jobs operate on

tight deadlines. A construction worker must be able to work in a team

environment and work well with others.

II. Job Profile of a Construction Worker

According to Jobstreet Philippines (2018), a construction worker must be

physically fit. It must be at least high school graduate. Have at least 5 months

of related work experience. It has an average pay of PHP 63.59 per hour.

(Payscale, 2018) Mostly, the responsibilities of Construction workers are

assisting tradesmen and machine operators in construction projects, erecting

and breaking up scaffolding, ramps etc. with attention to safety, and unloading

and carrying materials at construction sites.

III. Advantages of being a Construction Worker

9

According to Matrix Labour Leasing (2016), the Advantages of being a

construction worker, the first one is the Great Salary. Since construction is a

very broad term and the pay will vary depending on the type of construction

job as well as your skillset. However, compared to other labor jobs, a

construction worker can expect to enjoy an excellent paycheck. And also, a

construction job is a relatively way to increase your income without attending

school for a number of years. The second one is – it is Flexible. Unlike in

other industries such as banking or technology, construction workers have the

flexibility of moving around the country with ease. Whether you want to live

in a busy city or a quiet town, you will be able to find nearby construction

labor jobs. And the third one is – it has Diverse Opportunities. When you

choose a career in construction, there are many different career paths you can

embark on. This growing industry allows you to explore a variety of

construction labor jobs and gives you the opportunity to build new skills and

knowledge, which will be valuable wherever you choose to go.

IV. Disadvantages of a Construction Worker

According to Matrix Labour Leasing (2016), the Disadvantages of being a

construction worker, the first one is the Safety Risks. On a construction site,

even a minor slip or fall can cause serious injury. And while work sites are

much safer now than in the past, dangerous work conditions are still

something you may want to consider before choosing a construction labour

job. The second one is the Short-Term Labour. Construction workers may find

themselves worrying about long-term job security or feeling uneasy about the
10

future of their careers. In addition, the availability of construction labour jobs

may fluctuate depending on companies’ peak periods (i.e. summer or during

the holidays) and it may be difficult to find work in a snow-prone region. And

the third one is the Age. It is said that as you become older, working on a

construction site becomes more difficult and riskier, especially if you suffer

from a past injury. However, if you build the right skills, there is the

opportunity to work your way up to a more comfortable and safer office job.

V. Issues in the Labour

According to Parce (2017), the work of a construction worker is one that is

considered honourable yet a “low class” job to take. May projects in the

Philippines are done by the common construction worker such as the

Philippines’ “Build, Build, Build” phenomenon where it is considered to be a

golden age of infrastructure projects in the country.

However, problem arise such as resource allocation aid possible delay to

construction. One example of this is an article by Parce (2017) that indicates

the completion of Jandaloni Drainage completion is due on January of 2018.

According to Riddell (2016), there are top 5 issues that construction industry

face. The first one is the Shortage of Qualified workers. The second is

Generational Differences. The third one is Technology adoption. The fourth

one is Environmental Sustainability and lastly, the Project complexity.

11

VI. General Benefits

According to the Construction Industry Training Board (2018), there are

multiple benefits that being a construction worker offers. Living in a country

that demands every individual to work hard to survive daily living requires a

decent job. Altogether with the job itself, what matters most is the individual’s

benefits in general. Knowing that being a construction worker is one of the

most underrated jobs in our country, yet it is also one of the riskiest. In this

section, we are about to classify the benefits between their health and their

lives.

`A construction worker can expect to have an excellent paycheck depending

on the type of a worker’s skill set and most especially on the construction type

as well. Since construction is a job where an employee can adopt the relevant

skills quickly, this job is a helpful way to increase income without the need of

attending school for years. From financial support, construction workers also

seek for their own safety. Wherever a construction site is located, a minor slip

of fall is possible that can cause serious injury. In this case, which ever

company or employer construction worker is up to, they are the ones who are

given the liability of their employee’s safety. Lastly, being a construction

worker is ageless. This job is not pertaining to the age of an employee,

otherwise, this job is all about one’s skills to make the best out of his

abilities. One of the benefits of becoming a construction worker is that you'll

be able to use your skills wherever you go. The construction industry exists in
12

every state, in every town, and beyond. Not only will you have the advantage

of job security, but you'll also be paid well for your hard work.

VII. Common Dangers in Construction

According to Strong Law Offices (2019), construction is one of the country’s

most dangerous industries. Workers face injuries from falls, electrocution,

faulty equipment and more.

Unless someone happens to work in construction, it is easy to overlook the

fact that construction laborers risk their lives every day to provide the things

that the rest of the community takes for granted, such as safe buildings and

roads. However, the fact remains that construction is one of the most

dangerous jobs for workers in Illinois and everywhere else in the country.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, fatal workplace

injuries in construction rose by 6 percent last year. Construction had one of the

highest fatality rates out of all industries.

VIII. Synthesis

A construction worker typically works as part of a team on a construction site

such as for a building, home, or other structure. But most of the time, a

construction worker is not required to receive formal education, although

some attend trade schools and classes to receive certification for various skills.
13

In some cases, to be a construction worker, it must be at least high school

graduate. Have at least 5 months of related work experience. They have an

average pay of PHP 63.59 per hour.

Most of the construction workers faces issues in the industry such as Shortage

of Qualified workers, Generational Difference, Technology adoption,

Environmental Sustainability and lastly, the Project complexity. One of the

benefits of becoming a construction worker is that you'll be able to use your

skills wherever you go. Not only will you have the advantage of job security,

but you'll also be paid well for your hard work. Knowing that being a

construction worker is one of the most underrated jobs in our country, yet it is

also one of the riskiest.Workers face injuries from falls, electrocution, faulty

equipment and more.

Methodology

I. Research Design

The researchers conducted a descriptive method in studying the life of

a construction worker in Sto. Tomas, Binan, Laguna, in accordance to

gathering data about the risks in their work.

The results consisted of descriptive data and were categorized as

qualitative. The researchers employed collective case study to increase the

reliability, the similarities and differences to get better understanding for the

study.

II. Sampling Technique

The researchers made use of purposive or judgmental sampling in

choosing the construction workers to answer the questions prepared by the

15

researchers. They used purposive sampling in a way that the researchers had

picked those who are only working as a construction worker for at least five

(5) years. The chosen construction workers were those people who works in

Sto. Tomas, City of Binan, Laguna.

III. Data Gathering Procedure

The research conducted will gain a permission to carry forward the

procedures to be used in the field through the approval of Ms. Imeelyn

Zamora, our research teacher.

The researchers first course of action is to obtain the data necessary for

the papers which first is the related literature in our study. The researchers got

data in researching online and reading articles in books in the library of La

Consolacion Binan. The second course of action that the researchers did was

to make the cover letter and interview questionnaires. The cover letter is for

the approval of the research teacher, the vice president and the principal of the

school so that the researchers may able to interview their respondents which

are outside of the school premises. The researchers passed through many

revisions because of the confusion in some particular questions but then with

the help of the three professors, the researchers were able to come up with the

questions that is connected specifically to the statement of the problem. The

interview questions (or questionnaires) are prepared beforehand and will be

semi-standardly used in the field by the researchers. The third course of action

is the interview schedule. The researchers were able to interview two (2)

respondents in the first day and three (3) respondents on the second day and

having the total of five (5) respondents. The interview process was held on the
16

scheduled day in the chosen place and the respondents answers the questions

of the researchers by first asking the general information. The researchers

record the answers of the respondents as well as the questions of the

researchers. Lastly, as the researchers already gathered the data that they need,

they proceed on listening to the recordings and transcript them.

Interview Analysis

1. Have you ever been into an accident or get injured during working hours? If

yes, what kind of accident and why does it happen? If none, what are the risks

of a construction worker based on your experience?

Like stepping from nails accidentally, a metal fell to you. Pierced by a nail or

sometimes minor injuries. There had times they fell because of lack on caution

and lack of discipline. Fell on the sack of cements that cause a back ache.

2. Does being a construction worker made you have a problem regarding your

health? If yes, what is it? If none, give some possible risks.

Fever, flu. There are simple instances like the high temperature of weather, a

chance of sickness due to light rains, even the cough. The heat of the sun
18

sometimes they feel dizzy or what do you call that, high blood they may feel

high blood because of heat. Flu is the most common illness.

3. Do you often work with harmful substances as materials? If yes, how

these substances affect you? If no, are you still willing to pursue your

job whenever you will find out there will be materials like those?

Especially when you’re painting. Such as thinners, those chemicals are

harmful. Just spray it once and it can be harmful in your eyes already. We

don’t use chemical that much so I might not work with chemicals if I need to

use it in the work. We are using an acrylic that’s why we had stomach ache

Chapter V

Findings, Conclusion, and Recommendation

Findings

The main purpose of this research is to determine the life of

construction workers and how they survive the risks in their job. The

researchers come up with five (5) respondents from the barangay of Sto.

Tomas, Binan, Laguna. They have interviewed their respondents within two

(2) days. The researchers conducted a descriptive method to study the life of

each construction worker. They used recorders to gather all the data. The

researchers used purposive or judgmental sampling in choosing the

construction workers to answer the questions they prepared.

Specifically, the researchers aimed to answer questions about the

mentioned job and these inquiries rounded about knowing the typical risks of

being a construction worker, the immediate response they exhibit when an

incident happens, and the precautions they apply to protect themselves from

the risk of their nature of job. The researchers have gathered answers stating

that heights, chemicals, and climate change are the typical risks of a

construction worker. They discovered that the response exhibited by the

construction workers depends on their contractor or employer when an

20

incident happens. The construction workers’ precautions to protect themselves

from the risk of their nature of job are prayer, discipline, and enough

knowledge about their job.

The researchers had gathered construction workers who have five (5)

years of work experience wherein they had accumulated valid information and

proofs about the answers they had collected. The construction workers were

able to answer the questions based on their own true experiences. The

highlights of these data are the concise clarification of each respondents

related to their experiences in which the researchers found it easy to have

comparisons between them.

Conclusions

From this research, the researchers were able to draw the following

conclusions. First, the life of construction workers in Sto. Tomas, Binan,

Laguna is technically tough and dangerous. Second, the risks that they

experience are natural more than expected. And lastly, the connectivity of

construction workers and their employer or company is significant for them to

achieve safety.

Recommendation

From the results of this research, the researchers were able to classify

recommendations to the future researchers.

21

 First, the future researchers would increase knowledge about the main

points in the life of construction workers and the strategies that they

apply to keep themselves safe during their work.

 Second, the future researchers would also include the objections that

construction workers may have and in what ways they comply in

accordance of making these solved reliably.

 And lastly, the future researchers will also gather construction workers

who are legitimate and liable to the information to be collected and use

them for comparisons, since they are a lot of construction workers in

the country that as well offers different experiences that comply into

different aspect of their job.
