Classroom: McLeod Innovation Center Office Hours: 8:15 AM - 8:30 AM

Course Description
Foundations of Technology and Coding is a required one semester or summer course for all freshman and
transfer students. This course will begin by introducing students to the iPad as an educational tool. Students
will enroll in all necessary systems and learn about important schoolwide iPad apps including, but not limited
to, Prep Connect, Schoology, Google Drive, Notability, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Students will learn innovation
center software and technologies, including, but not limited to, 3D printing & laser cutting. This course will
also introduce students to computer programming & coding languages, as well as digital citizenship.

Course Objectives
Students will gain the skills necessary to use their iPads to the fullest as tools for education. Students will
become proficient in using Prep Connect, Notability, Google Drive, G Suite, Apple iWork, and iMovie apps.
Students will engage in discussions on digital privacy, cyber-bullying, source credibility, and forming security-
conscious online habits.

Student enrolled in this course will also gain foundational knowledge in a variety of computer science topics.
Students will learn language syntax, algorithm development, and basic debugging and troubleshooting across
both languages. Students will learn how to approach real-world problems like a computer scientist and gain
technical problem-solving skills.

Students will gain experience collaborating in groups and presenting their work through different mediums
including reflection papers, presentations, and coding projects.

Rules and Expectations

Students are always expected to put forth their best effort both in class and on all assignments. All students
are expected to actively participate in the learning process. Students are encouraged to ask questions during
class or seek out extra help during office hours. If you are unable to attend extra help during office hours,
please email me and we can coordinate another time to meet. If a student finds that he is falling behind, he
should make every effort to meet with me so that we can form a plan for them to get caught up. When
coming to office hours, please prepare specific questions regarding what topics you would like assistance with
so that we can make best use of the time.

Students should check their Fairfield Prep email and Schoology daily for updates and announcements related
to the course. All assignments and any prepared slides that I use during class will be posted on Schoology. I will
try to respond to emails as quickly as possible.

All students are expected to follow the code of conduct as outlined in the Fairfield Prep Student/Parent
Handbook. Students must be in class on time and in dress code. All students are expected to treat me and
each other with respect and dignity.

1
Technology Use
Students must bring their charged iPads to class every day as they will be used to follow along during lectures,
and to complete assignments during class. Forgetting an iPad or not having a charged iPad is not an excuse for
missing class material or assignments.

Improper use of iPads will not be tolerated. If a student is found using their iPad for purposes other than
participating in the lecture, their iPad will be locked, and they will not be allowed to use their iPad for the
remainder of the class. Active participation will still be expected. Therefore, the student must continue to be
actively engaged in the lesson, following along and will be expected to answer questions as part of the class
discussion.

For the coding portion of the course, online tools will be used that can be accessed from an iPad or computer.
Students are encouraged to practice accessing the online tools from home as this will be required for them to
work on coding assignments from home as well as during any time allotted in class.

Homework
S students will be exposed to different iPad apps and be given homework assignments that require them to
use these apps in an academic setting. Homework assignments will be given each night and will serve to help
students practice and extend what was learned during lecture that day.

Students will also be given coding assignments as homework that will require them to use the skills learned in
class and apply them to technical problems. As computer programs either work or do not, students may
submit code that does not run, display, or compile successfully, and they will receive partial credit for the
parts that were correctly completed.

All homework assignments will be submitted on Schoology as PDF documents unless otherwise stated.

Labs
Throughout the course, lab exercises may be assigned to be completed during that class. With much of the
material that will be presented in this course, hands-on experience will be the best way to become proficient
in the skill. Not all exercises completed in class will be labs. Labs will be specifically identified as being for
credit. If you complete the full lab, you will receive full credit. If you complete part of the lab, you will receive
partial credit, and if you do not complete the lab, you will receive no credit. Labs will be submitted at the end
of each class and serve as the quantitative class participation grade.

Projects
Students will be assigned a project midway through the course that synthesizes the skills learned in the first
half of the course. A similar project at the end of the course will be assigned that focuses on the material from
the second half of the course.

2
Grading Policy
Grades will be based on a total point system. In a total point system, each assignment is assigned a point
value. At the end of the semester, a student’s grade is determined by dividing the sum of points earned on
each assignment by the sum of the total possible points for all assignments. Letter grades will then be
determined based off this percentage (see the Fairfield Prep Student Handbook for more specifics). Students
can always see their current grade by logging onto Prep Connect. All assignments will be graded, and grades
will be posted within 2 school days of assignments being submitted.

Late assignments will be accepted the day after the deadline for half credit. Assignments submitted more than
one day after the deadline will receive no credit. There will be no opportunities for extra credit or to redo
assignments in this course. Students must ensure that they are checking deadlines on assignments, and that
they are planning ahead so that they may contact me well in advance of the assignment deadline if they have
questions on the assignment.

Absence Policy
Due to the compressed nature of summer courses, absences are not allowed.

Academic Integrity
Any sort of cheating will not be tolerated at all in this class. Being a student at Fairfield Prep is a privilege, not
a right, and cheating and plagiarism is something that is unacceptable as a Prep student. Cheating can take
numerous forms, including, but not limited to:
• Copying from another student or allowing another student to copy material during a quiz, test, or exam.
• Copying from another student or allowing another student to copy homework or any other out of class
assignments without my authorization.
• Using unauthorized materials, written text, or electronic equipment, including iPads, during a quiz, test or
exam.
• Unauthorized speaking during a quiz, test or exam.
If a student or students are found cheating or aiding someone else in cheating, all parties involved will
automatically receive a zero for the assignment, and further discipline as stated in the Fairfield Prep
Student/Parent Handbook will apply.

Final Note
I reserve the right to amend this syllabus in the interest of maximizing student performance.
