BIOCHEMISTRY
CRP C Reactive Protein Serum
CRP Quantitative* 0.16 0.0-0.50 mg/dL
Comments :-
* C- reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase reactant, hepatic secretion of which is stimulated in response to
inflammatory cytokines.
* Unlike other acute phase reactants, CRP is not affected by hormones.
* Invasive bacterial infection, inflammation, extensive tissue damagea and necrosis, malignancies and autoimmune disorders cause CRP
levels to increase. CRP levels rise apidly, and increased values can be detected within 6 to 12 hrs. after an inflammatory process has
begun. CRP values peak & normalize considerably more quickly than to other parameters of inflammation. Complications, should they
occur, cause the CRP values to increase again or to be elevated constantly.
* CRP levels are valuable in - the clinical assessment of chronic inflammatory disorders
- monitoring the efficacy of antimicrobiol therapy
- diagnosis of bacterial infections especially in neonates.
- follow up of bacterial infections, and for controlling and monitoring postoperative
infections.
- assessing vascular inflammation and cardiovascular risk stratification. (
C R P l e v e l h a s b e e n s h o w n t o b e a n independent- risk factor for
atherosclerotic disease).
- assessment of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in coronary artey disease
* CRP is a very sensitive but nonspecific marker of inflammation. A variety of conditions other than arteriosclerosis may cause dramatic
increases in CRP levels.
* In patients with rheumatoid arthritis, persistently elevated CRP concentrations are present when the disease is active and usually fall to
normal during periods of complete remission.
