Elements of Poetry: Lines and Stanzas

5
Lines
Lines of poems are often organized
into stanzas which are denominated by the
number of lines included. Thus a collection of
two lines is a couplet (or distich), three lines
a triplet (or tercet), four lines a quatrain, and
so on.

6
Stanzas
In poetry, a stanza is used to describe the main building
block of a poem. It is a unit of poetry composed of lines
that relate to a similar thought or topic—like a paragraph
in prose or a verse in a song.

Looking Away
Once there was
a young man
Who toured the world
Year after year
To marvel
At places and people
He had never seen

Until one day

Getting old
He walked back
And learn
The splendor
Of home
