a) What is ENC?
An Electronic Navigational Chart is an official Charts database created by a national hydrographic office
and is designed for Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS).
An Electronic Navigational Chart must conform to standards stated in the International Hydrographic
Organization (IHO) Special Publication S-57 before it can be certified as an ENC.
Only ENCs can be used within ECDIS to meet the International Maritime Organization (IMO) performance
standard for ECDIS

Available parameters and production schedule
1) Available parameters
● Weather forecast – D to D+3 and Weather forecast – D4 to D+6: The CATSAT software enables to
display the daily meteorological data and forecast up to the next 6 days.
-Pressure fields: The pressure field provides data of atmospheric pressure field delimited by isobars.
It is interesting to observe the evolution of these pressure fields in order to assess the trend of an area.
-Swell high and wave: Swell is sometimes an obstacle for fishing; therefore thanks to this data it is
possible to observe the forecast for this parameter in the same way as for pressure fields.
- Swell height: The swell is the formation of wavelength waves on the surface of the sea. This
parameter indicates the direction and period.
-Wind direction and force: The direction and force of the winds are represented by a symbol.
- Wind gust: This is the maximum speed of the wind measured during a specific time period. In CATSAT
we have recorded the medium wind over over a considered 6hours time period
● Altimetry: It is a technique for measuring the level of the sea surface. Thanks to space altimetry, we
can measure the precise distance between the satellite and the sea surface. The measures made take
into account all sea level variations with a precision of a few centimeters. However, the only
interesting component for the realization of maps in the CATSAT software is the variation in density
of the water masses. We obtain this data after a complex processing of data.
The data presented in CATSAT is the topographical anomaly of the sea surface (difference at the
middle level of the oceans)
86
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
The oceanic parameters shown in CATSAT are all the areas where the presence of living organisms is
probable. Negatives anomalies are location where there is an up-welling of water from the deep layers,
which are colder and richer in nutrients. This addition of nutritive substances at the surface will be used
by phytoplankton, thanks to solar radiation.
In case of stable structures a real food chain can be establish, with its preys and its predators which most
pelagic fishes are.
● Temperature: The water surface emits infrared radiations with different intensity according to its
temperature. Satellites based radiometers have the property of picking up the radiation emitted by the
ocean. By processing the data transmitted by these sensors, it is possible to obtain the temperature of
the water.
● Temperature cloudless: Microwave radiometers record micro-waves emissions from sea surface
layers.
● Plankton: Ocean color data is the result of radiations emitted by chlorophyll-A which is representative
of plankton concentration. The plankton concentration is the principal food of small pelagic species, which
are themselves preys for other bigger pelagic species. Thus, the ocean color is closely related to the fish
presence.
● Global stream: The surface current delivered is the total current where the geostrophy component as
well as the surface pressure and wind stress are represented. The sea surface current maps are very
important for most of the application at sea. It can be used to optimize a route, to secure and plan
operations at seas, to follow drifting objects….
87
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
● Geostrophic current: It is one of the global stream component. The wind rotation phenomenon in
the atmosphere has its equivalent in the ocean. For this reason, in the ocean which is made up of
moving masses of water (particularly distinguished by their temperature and their salinity), the
currents rotate clockwise around ocean humps and rotate counter-clockwise around ocean dips. Those
currents are called geostrophic currents. To sum up, the above phenomena result in the following rule
concerning the ocean: In the northern hemisphere, the Coriolis force deflects masses of water to the
right of their path. The geostrophic current therefore leaves humps to its right. In the southern
hemisphere, the Coriolis force deflects masses of water to the left of their path. The geostrophic
current therefore leaves humps to its left. These laws are extremely important in order to understand
and analyse altimetric maps and the corresponding geostrophic currents
● Salinity: Salt concentration in the ocean is very important because it is directly correlated to the
dissolved oxygen concentration in the water. Furthermore, the dissolved oxygen is also a very
important and determining environmental parameter for fish biology.
● Thermocline: The thermocline is a deep layer of water with a strong and sudden decrease of sea
temperature along a short distance. This layer separates the homogeneous surface waters from the
deep cold waters where temperature is colder. When the ocean suffers from stream effects, wave or
thunderstorms, waters are mixed and there is no significant thermocline.
The picture above shows a changing in temperature of 2.5°C at 5m depth. In this case, we consider
that the upper layer depth of thermocline is 20m and that intensity of thermocline is 2.5°C.
The associated thermocline parameters as depth, intensity and shear stream can be obtain thanks to
sub surface temperature data, available at different depth and coming from patterns.
Some fishes are very sensible to thermocline, according to their species, their age or their size, but
also in function of the thermocline intensity.

● Sub-surface temperature: CATSAT software provides you with sub-surface temperature maps from
global models at 10 depths (20, 30, 50, 75, 100, 120, 150, 200, 250, 300m). They are complementary
with surface temperature maps and provide information about the evolution and position of fronts
along each depth. From CATSAT 4.3, you have the possibility to have the information from 400m to
1000m depth
The sub-current is extracted from the model data. We can discern the shear depth and the shear
intensity. In the shear depth component, we will have the maximum variation of speed and direction
between currents
The shear stress in CATSAT is the highest difference between two currents values taken over two
successive horizontal oceanic layers from the surface to the depth of the thermocline as shown in the
following:
U n1 U n 2 Vn1 Vn 2
Shear MAX ( )
H n1 H n
The current is describe by two current components for layer n (and respectively for layer n+1) which
are Un and Vn (Horizontal and vertical components) (and respectively U n+1 and Vn+1) and Hn+1 and Hn
correspond to the depth of the currents.
In the graph below, you can see in blue the current values on layer n and n+1, and in red the resulting
shear stress.

La ye r n+1

● Isotherm depth: This parameter allows to look for a particular isotherm (temperature) in sea surface
and depth. An isotherm is a line where the temperature is constant. In this way, CATSAT enables to
choose one reference temperature in all the layers and at each depth.
89

In the picture below, the yellow line represents the 26°C isotherm, that is to say the line where the
temperature is constant at 26°C.
Depth
● Sea surface Temperature Climatology: This parameter present in the 4.3 version allow to determine
an average temperature of the surface of the oceans established over 30 days.
● Ice: This parameter allows to see the ice coverage all over the world. This parameter is composed
with Ice concentration and Ice thickness.
● High resolution data “of the day”: Plankton and temperature parameters are now available at the
date. These parameters are produced the same day without temporal composition.
● Pixel date: This is the age of the data. This function is only available for plankton and temperature.
Due to several days compositions for global coverage maps, all the pixel displayed on the charts have
not been measured the same day by the satellite. Thus, we now provide pixel date maps to get the age
of each pixel and deduce the reliability of the data.
● FSLE (Finite Size Lyapunov Exponents): This new parameter displays particles content in the oceans.
It shows places where particles converge and diverge. The darker lines represent places where
these particles are the most present.

Each square corresponds to a data for a 10° x 10° area. Each square has a unique area ID, which is the
area identifier.
The area ID has the following structure: <ID latitude> <ID longitude> where:
<ID latitude> is a code with 2 characters. The fist one indicates the latitude of the middle of the square
in tens of degrees. This number is followed by a letter, S or N that indicates either the North or the
South.
<ID longitude> is a code of two digits indicating the longitude of the west edge of the square in ten of
degrees.

3) Layers of data
The display control panel is composed by three layers of data: Maps, Isolines and Vectors.
“Maps” is a layer in color mode (pixel) representing the data (plankton, altimetry, salinity…) with a set of
color defined by a color key scale.
In map mode, some parameters are voluntary represented by isolines at a determined scale, for more
readability. For example like Altimetry data.
98
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
“Vectors” are different from the maps and isolines. Maps and isolines show both the parameters of
the oceanographic module. On the contrary, the vector function is made with straight line segments
and can only show the stream (geostrophic or global stream), the meteo (wind and swell), and the sub
surface stream at different depth.
99
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
The first two screen captures above represent the same thing but with different layers. The third one is
the representation of the global stream at the same location and the same day. We note that the plankton
detachment can be seen under the form of a map or with isolines. In the same way the global stream
clearly shows this detachment.
However, note that this analysis can be more precise by changing the Min/Max color scheme (Refer to
point VII-A).
4) Different views
You have the choice between three views in the CATSAT software: Main view, view 2 and 3D oceano view.
The main view allows to display the different parameters. This is the view proposed by the software by
default.
The application allows to display the three different views on the screen that can represent three different
data.
In this way, you can visualize the same type of data at two different dates, two types of data at the same
date or many types of data or dates in layer of maps or isolines.
You have two possibilities to display the view, either with the icons located in the toolbar or with the
menu bar.

_____________________________________________________________________________________
5) Date of availability
The small calendar in the Display control panel allows to show when the data is available and to select
the day you wish to see them displayed. The calendar is composed of three lines, one for each layer.
The availability of data is shown with a colored square, red, blue or green.
● If the square is red, it means that this is the day where the data has been produced.
● A blue square indicates that the data is available; they have been extrapolated from the date they
have been produced in order to be overlaid or compared with the other parameters.
● A green square is displayed for meteo data previsions, that is to say for weather data HF given every
6 hours.
● An orange or yellow button shows the climatology data. The orange squares alternates with the
orange squares to differentiate each month.

6) Lunar calendar
A lunar calendar has now been integrated in the display control panel in order to give extra information
for the fishing campaigns.
7) Gradient mode
A gradient is a variation between two dates for a same parameter. For example, this mode allows you to
compare the temperature variation between two dates.
The new display control panel integrates a gradient mode allowing to two compare easily in the same
window the variation between 2 dates. Refer below for more information

Another function in the CATSAT software allows to read several parameters at a given point, in only one
window. For more information about this function, please refer to the point VII–C-4 of this manual.
In the picture below, we can see three layers of data displayed: map of plankton, isolines of
temperature and vectors indicating geostrophical stream.
105
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
We note in this map that the layer of plankton is coming undone from the plankton mass. By adding
the geostrophical stream layer, we see that plankton is dragged by the stream.
In the example above, we see the relation between positives anomalies (A) – indicative of water mass
expansion due to high temperature – and the down-welling (B) of water surfaces.
106
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Above, we can see that the isolines of sub temperature correspond to the map of thermocline. This
confirms that along the water column there is a little temperature difference, then the temperature
changes abruptly in a very localized area.

To compare two different parameters, you must first display the 2 views. To this end, use the button
View 2 in the toolbar (Refer to point II-G) or select Chart 2 in the View menu (Refer to point V-A-4).
Before making the comparison, you must inform the requested information in the Display control
panel.
First, select the main chart on the display control panel and choose the parameter you want to display
on the first map (for example plankton)
Then, select the second chart and select the other parameter to display. For more convenience, you
can directly click on the button named Data synchro to synchronize the data in the 2 views (refers to
point K).
108
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
To compare two different parameters at the same time, with two different views enables to bring out
some characteristics such as favorable place for fishing. By comparing two parameters, you can see what
the best fronts are, and deduct where the most convenient place for fishing will be.
109
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
The example above show the possibility of displaying Subsurface temperature and plankton data.
On View2, we note that temperature at 50m depth in the center of map is 27.6°C whereas it is 18.8°C
at 100m depth. This information indicates a drop in temperature of almost 9°C, which is characteristic
of thermocline.
The View 1 indicates the presence of plankton at the same place, delineated by an area of altimetric
isolines data for negative anomaly.
The interpretation of these maps allows to locate precisely favorable areas with presence of nutrients
and intense biological activity, that is to say with fishes.
First, you must display the second chart, using the View menu or the icon on the toolbar.
Then, you have to select your data in the display control panel. Choose the same parameter on the main
view and on the chart 2 (or click on the Data synchro button after selecting the parameter in the main
view > refer to point K).
To conclude, indicate for each chart the date you wish to display.
Check that the button Date Synchro, which is located on the Display Control panel, is not ticked. If so, you
will not be able to display the data at different dates.

Dynamics parameters
Two kinds of parameters exist in the software: parameters that we can fix in a permanent way and
those that we can configure in a dynamic way. Permanent parameters do not change when we close
and open Catsat. Dynamics one are reset when restart the program.
The isolines are one of the three representation data displayed on screen. If a parameter can be
displayed as a map it can also be displayed as an isoline. The isoline step is the difference between
each isoline displayed on screen (expressed in with a specific unit). This unit is in function of the type
of data.
To modify the isoline step, you must first display the Display Control panel.
STEP 1:
STEP 2:
Select the isoline of which you want to configure the step and click on Advanced.
152

STEP 3:
153
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
For example, we can see on the picture above the different isoline step of altimetry. In the first picture,
we have a step of 0.010m, where isolines are squeezed, and closer from one another. Whereas in the
second picture the isoline step is 0.05m; isolines are less numerous.
154
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
You have the possibility to show or hide the isolines parameters directly from the Advanced display.
The only way to show the isolines is to use the Display control panel. Choose the requested parameter in
the scrolling list in the isolines box, and the data will appear via a set of lines on the map. However, you
can now display not only the isolines but also the contour reference and/or the two of them.
By default, one out of three boxes must be ticked. You cannot ticked two boxes at the same times or
ticked any boxes.
STEP 1:
Select the parameter in the isolines box. The data will appear under the form of a set of lines (refer to
chapter V part A for more information).
155
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
STEP 2:
Be careful, if you close the window without ticking the “isolines only” box, the isolines on the
map will remain hidden and you will only see the reference contours appearing when
displaying the isoline parameters.
156
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
The reference contour allows to highlight critical values of the water mass.
Now you have the possibility to display the reference contour either together with the isolines or either
separately from the Advanced display.
In the Advanced display, tick on the box named “reference contour only” to see only the reference contour
displayed on the main view.
You can choose the reference value of the contour directly on the Advanced Display:

EXAMPLE 2:
190
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
You can change the parameters of the profile view by modifying the options located above the profile
window.
● Depth: This is the level of depth of the view. You can reduce it or extend it and define a interval min-
max depth.
For example, if we take the profile example n°2 above, we see that salinity is increasing at a depth of
100m. Therefore, to have more details, we can display a view between 100m and 200m.
Thus, at a largest scale depth, we discover some pockets where salinity is higher.
191
CATSAT – OCEANOGRAPHY USER MANUAL
_____________________________________________________________________________________
● Reference: When the data type is thermocline and/or temperature, the reference box represents the
reference temperature. When the data type is salinity, it gives the salt rate per liter of solution.
● Data type: In the profile view, you can only display the following data: salinity, temperature, thermocline
and temperature and thermocline at the same time.
● Step: You can also modify the step of isolines (Refer point VII-B for definition).
The color scale allows to analyze the content of the transect view.

● Weather High frequencies: The high frequencies weather maps are available every six hours and
are indicated on the Display Control Panel with a green square.
● Swell height: The swell is the formation of wavelength waves on the surface of the sea.
This parameter indicates the direction and period.
● Wind gust: This is the maximum speed of the wind measured during a specific time
period of 6hours.
● Visible clouds and Infrared clouds: Images of clouds cover are available everyday and are very useful
for the localization of rainy areas and for scheduling fishing operations. Two different types of images
are available: visible and infrared images. This is the same phenomena recorded at the same time but
data is represented in different ways.
● Weather alerts: CATSAT software transmits the weather alerts that national weather agencies are
in charge to produce, under the Weather Meteorology Organization Control. These weather alerts are
distributed through the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) immediately after
production.
In the version CATSAT v4.2, the cloud coverage is now displayed in square 10°x10°.
You must display the Display control panel before showing the clouds.
