DVB-S2 Brief Introduction

DVB-S2 is the second-generation specification for DVB-S standard.

Modulation schemes: QPSK, 8PSK 16APSK (and 32APSK)
With DVB-S2 CCM, a single network-wide MODCOD is used, based on the worst
case location, weather and time.
With ACM, a set of MODCODS is used, dynamically selecting the best MODCOD
per VSAT on a frame-by-frame basis

44

CCM - Constant Coding & Modulation

___________________________________
ACM - Adaptive Coding & Modulation
___________________________________
In ACM mode the total OB bit rate changes dynamically according to VSATs capability &
___________________________________
capacity.
___________________________________
Packets are Coded & Modulated depending on link status of destination VSAT.

DVB-RCS Brief Introduction

The Gilat way
MF-TDMA (Multi-Frequency Time-Division Multiple Access)
Modulations schemes QPSK and 8PSK
Multiple carrier types (symbol-rates-modulation-coding)
Possibly, multiple MODCODS time-multiplexed on the same carrier (V6.1)
Improved IB spectrum efficiency (currently 0.35 roll off, 0.2-TBD).
Slot allocation:
Reservation Only – No contention!
Rate and Volume Based Dynamic Capacity.
Users Data Traffic is carried over ATM 1,2 or 4 ATM cells.
Currently using 2 ATM cells per TRF

Network Topology

SkyEdge II hub enables system VSATs to communicate via satellite links:

Internet/Intranet networking (VSAT-to-Hub).
Each other (VSAT-to-VSAT).
System development road-map offers 3 basic topologies:
Star (v6.0)
Star with Terrestrial Interface (v6.1)
Star with Mesh Interface (v6.2)

Network Architecture
System Entities

The SE-II system can be classified into two main parts:

VSATs (remote terminals)
Located at the remote locations
IDU – VSAT IP rev5.0
Consists of ODU (antenna dish, linear BUC and LNB)
Hub (the center of the star)
. Responsible for two main functions:
• Manages & control the network elements
• Aggregate & distribute IB&OB IP traffic
Each network Outbound (and Inbound) is supported by single segment (NS)
Each Hub can host up to 5 different Network Segments (NSs)
