Accent System Overview

The SkyEdge II Accent is a dual transmission mode VSAT. As an alternative to
transmitting in Burst mode, it supports Continuous transmission over the Return link
(Inbound) based on the DVB-S2 standard. Continuous transmission provides
functionality similar to functionality provided by SCPC (Single Channel per Carrier)
technology.
To receive continuous transmissions from Accent VSATs, the SkyEdge II Hub
includes one or more Multi-Channel Demodulators (MCDs). Each MCD includes four
receivers. Each receiver can be independently allocated to receive a transmission
from an Accent VSAT.
All Continuous mode traffic is forwarded by the MCDs to the HSP. The HSP treats
Inbound traffic in Continuous mode in the same way as it does in the Burst mode
(except for packet reassembly, which is not needed in this case).
The Accent Scheduler is an NMS wizard that facilitates the operation of Accent
VSATs in Continuous mode (on page 29).
Accent VSAT includes a removable multi-GByte microSD memory card. The microSD
memory card can be used for storing Web content requested by PCs behind the
Accent VSAT. The microSD memory card makes that content available more quickly
for subsequent requests by all PCs connected to the same VSAT.

Accent VSAT and Accent System Key Features

The Accent VSAT supports the following key functionalities:
 Continuous transmission over the Return link based on the DVB-S2 standard
 High Inbound throughput per site (up to 20 Mbps)
 Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM), as well as transmission power
modification, for continuous VSAT transmission

December, 2013 5

Accent System Operation Modes Introduction

 Flexibility in network usage – the choice between Burst mode and Continuous
mode can be made after the network is installed, without site visits and without
equipment replacement
 CacheMode technology
 Continuous mode operation in VSAT Redundancy configuration
The Accent system as a whole supports the following key functionalities:
 MCD automatic redundancy
 Cross-Strap configuration
 Continuous transmission on-demand

Accent System Operation Modes

At any given time, an Accent VSAT works either in Burst mode or in Continuous
mode:
 In Burst mode, an Accent VSAT transmits CSC, SYNC and TRF bursts in
accordance with Gilat DVB-RCS based access scheme. The transmission is
intermittent and the intervals between bursts can be used for modifying the
transmission properties (e.g., slot type, symbol rate, frequency, ModCod, and
transmission power).
 In Continuous mode, an Accent VSAT is allocated a channel and constantly
transmits over it on a constant frequency and at constant symbol rate. ModCod,
as well as the transmission power, may be modified during transmission (as per
the DVB-S2 ACM scheme).
After a reset, the VSAT regains connectivity with the hub in Burst mode and may
perform a saturation search like any other SkyEdge II VSAT. Once the VSAT is
triggered to switch to the Continuous transmission mode, the VSAT performs a
saturation search in the allocated channel. While in Continuous mode, the Accent
VSAT adaptively changes its transmission power and ModCod in accordance with the
link conditions and a configurable margin.

Accent VSAT CacheMode Support

CacheMode is the Gilat advanced caching technology that is implemented in the
Accent VSAT by means of the Cache memory microSD card.
CacheMode technology currently supports caching of the objects that meet all of the
following requirements:
 HTTP objects that are smaller than 180 Kbytes
 Objects having the following extensions:
 JPG, JPEG
 GIF
 PNG
 CSS
 Objects that are received as a prefetch

Accent VSAT Redundancy (IDUR)

For information on how to configure and monitor the Accent VSAT Cache
support, refer to Appendix C: Configuring and Monitoring Cache Support on
Accent VSAT (on page 63).

Accent VSAT Redundancy (IDUR)

In a site with VSAT Redundancy (Indoor Unit Redundancy - IDUR) configuration, two
Accent VSATs are installed and configured so that one Accent VSAT is active and the
other Accent VSAT is standby. Both VSATs receive the Outbound transmission from
the SkyEdge II hub, but only the active VSAT is allowed to transmit signals.
Upon a switchover, while the site has a Continuous mode allocation, the standby
Accent VSAT becomes active, starts operating in Burst mode, and awaits the
command to enter Continuous mode. The NMS and the Accent Scheduler support
defining the reservation using the site's virtual ID and sending the command to the
appropriate VSAT using its actual ID.

To support VSAT Redundancy, the Accent VSAT is installed and configured in

the same way as other SkyEdge II VSATs (supporting the VSAT Redundancy
feature).
For detailed information on the VSAT Redundancy solution and on how to
configure the Accent VSATs for the VSAT Redundancy support on the NMS,
refer to the SkyEdge II VSAT Redundancy Configuration Guide, DC - 103334(X).

Accent System Cross-Strap Support

Starting from the SkyEdge II version 6.5P7, the Accent SkyEdge II system also
supports the Cross-Strap configuration for Continuous mode transmissions. The
MCDs are notified about this configuration and do not attempt to lock on the
Outbound signal when not allocated to transmitting VSATs.

Accent VSAT Continuous Transmission On-Demand

One of the Accent VSAT applications is to provide backup for terrestrial links. In this
application, when the terrestrial link functions properly (i.e., most of the time), the
Accent VSAT transmits in Burst mode and consumes almost no bandwidth. However,
when the terrestrial link fails, the Accent VSAT is allocated a continuous channel to
provide a high-throughput backup link.
In case of multiple terrestrial links (e.g., tens of links), it is expected that only a
small number of links may fail at the same time. Thus, with Accent VSATs, there is
no need to reserve a continuous channel per link to provide high availability backup
but rather to reserve a pool of few channels (less than the number of links being
backed up) to be used on-demand.

Accent System MCD Automatic Redundancy Introduction

For information on how to configure and operate the feature, see SkyEdge II
Accent VSAT Continuous Transmission On-Demand, Configuration Manual,
DC-103189(X).

Accent System MCD Automatic Redundancy

Starting from the SkyEdge II version 6.5P7, the SkyEdge II system supports the
MCD automatic redundancy mechanism. This mechanism reduces the service
interruption interval in case of an MCD channel (SCD) malfunction and prevents
fallback to Burst mode in case where a free SCD is available.

Accent VSAT Frequency Drift Mitigation Support

In version 6.8, Accent Frequency Drift Mitigation eliminates any possible significant
frequency drift while an Accent VSAT is transmitting in Continuous mode. Frequency
corrections of the transmission frequency are performed without causing
transmission errors or degradation in performance.

Requirements
SkyEdge II system must be fully upgraded to version 6.5P5 and higher.

The following features are supported starting from version 6.5P7:

 Cross-strap support
 MCD automatic redundancy
 Continuous transmission on-demand
 Accent VSAT Redundancy support

Licensing
Use of the VSAT Accent ability to transmit in Continuous mode requires a license.
There are three types of licenses for Continuous transmission and an Accent VSAT
has to be associated with one of them to support continuous transmission
(on page 25):
 Basic License - 2 Mbps
 Advanced License - 10 Mbps
 Unlimited License - 24 Mbps

An Accent VSAT that has not been associated with any license for Continuous
transmission is fully operational in the SkyEdge II network using Burst
transmissions in the Inbound.

Installing Accent VSAT

Install the Accent VSAT as described in the VSAT Installation and Configuration
manual, DC - 449120(X).
Consider the Accent VSAT hardware models during the installation process.

P1dB Search
Accent VSAT can automatically search for the BUC P1dB both in Burst mode and in
Continuous mode. In Continuous mode, the P1dB search is performed whenever the
VSAT is assigned a Continuous channel or the channel parameters are changed.

In case an Accent VSAT is used with wide signals, it is highly recommended to

perform a manual P1dB search (on page 51) after installation and to disable the
automatic search. The manual P1dB search may be stopped prior to reaching
P1dB if the received signal C/N is sufficient as per the link budget calculation.

Hub Architecture
Installing an MCD in a SkyEdge II hub requires a Parallel signal feed architecture to
be supported on the Inbound path. The signal is split by an RF splitter and a copy is
provided to each MCD.

December, 2013 15
Proprietary and Confidential
Hub Architecture Installing Accent System

Figure 9: Parallel Signal Feed Architecture

L-Band signal path is as follows:

 Gilat Line Amplifier (GLA) receives the Inbound signal from RFT via one of the
1:2 L-Band splitter's outputs.
 (Optional) The second output of the 1:2 L-Band splitter is received by the
Spectrum Analyzer for monitoring the signal received from the RFT.

When the RFT interfaces the Inbound L-band signal at 75 Ohm instead of 50
Ohm, the Inbound signal is routed via the 75 / 50 Ohm adapter to the 1:2 L-Band
splitter.

 The GLA amplifies the L-band signal to compensate for the attenuation inflicted
by the L-Band splitters (1:4 and 1:16) that are used for distributing the L-Band
signal to MCRs and MCDs.
 (Optional) One of the 1:16 L-Band splitter's output is connected to the Spectrum
Analyzer for monitoring the L-band signal level at the input to the MCD.

Older SkyEdge II hubs use the MCR concatenation architecture. Adding MCDs to
such a hub requires additional components. For more information, refer to
Section Installing MCD in Concatenated Signal Feed Architecture (on page 17).

16 Accent System
Proprietary and Confidential
Installing MCD

Installing MCD
Installing MCD in Parallel Signal Feed Architecture
MCDs supplied for SkyEdge II hubs of version 6.5P1 or higher are installed in a
similar manner to MCRs (see Section System Architecture (on page 15)). The signal
is provided to all receivers from a multi-port splitter.
To connect an MCD:
1. Insert the MCD unit to its designated position in the rack.
2. Insert the screws in the mounting brackets.
3. Tighten the screws to secure the component to the rack.
4. Connect an OUT port on the 1:16 L-Band splitter to the RF IN port on the MCD.
5. Connect LAN cables from the Satellite Switch to the MNG and Data ports on the
MCD as indicated in the Switch Port Allocation for Accent System.
6. Connect the power cable to the power socket on the MCD.

Installing MCD in Concatenated Signal Feed Architecture

In SkyEdge II hub that includes MCR with concatenated wiring, the input signal is
passed from one MCR to the next in a dual chain. The MCR is provided, therefore,
with two signal inputs and two signal outputs. As the MCD has only one signal input
(and no outputs), it cannot be connected together with MCRs in concatenated
(double-daisy-chain) architecture.

For information on concatenated architecture, refer to the RF Measurements

Installation and Configuration Guide, DC - 002276(X).

Perform the following actions to add MCDs to a SkyEdge II network segment having
a concatenated architecture:
1. Confirm that the splitter feeding the concatenation chains has an unused output
port.
 If the splitter does not have an available output port, replace the splitter with
a larger splitter or add another splitter before it to create additional ports.
 If another splitter is added, verify that you have recalibrated the RF level for
the MCRs as per the calibration goal.
2. Connect the available output port to a 1:N splitter, and connect the outputs of
the 1:N splitter to the MCD inputs. N should be selected to match the number of
MCDs needed (maximum for N is 16).
3. In case the RF level to the MCDs is too low, add a GLA before the 1:N splitter to:
 Compensate for the splitter loss
 Amplify the signal in case it is initially too low
 Enable easy calibration of the signal level to the calibration goal

December, 2013 17

Installing MCD Installing Accent System

LAN connectivity is the same as described for new hub architecture.

Compliance Criteria for MCD Noise Level

The compliance criteria depend on the hub architecture MCD hardware model:
MCD P/N Input Noise Dynamic Range Compliance Criteria
570140 -116 to -132 dBm/Hz -122±3 dbm/Hz
571140 -105 to -145 dBm/Hz -125±3 dbm/Hz

If the measured noise level deviates from the compliance criteria, contact the Gilat
Technical Support personnel to perform the noise level calibration.

When installing an MCD (P/N 570140) to a SkyEdge II hub, the recommended

calibration goal is -122 dBm/Hz at the input to the MCD/MCR (and not -125
dBm/Hz as described in the RF Measurements Installation and Configuration
Guide, DC - 002276(X).

As the MCD (P/N 570140) has a narrower input level range (-116 dBm/Hz to
-132 dBm/Hz) than the MCR (-105 dBm/Hz to -145 dBm/Hz), adding MCDs to a
SkyEdge II network segment may require an additional GLA to be added and
placed before the first (1:2) splitter. In this case, the additional GLA must be set
to maximal gain and the gain of the pre-existing GLA must be set to achieve the
calibration goal.

Verifying MCD L-Band Noise Level

To verify the MCD L-Band noise level:
1. Configure the MCD L-Band noise level as described in Section Configuring MCD
L-Band Noise Level (on page 22).
2. Connect the spectrum analyzer to the Monitor port on the MCD.
3. Verify that the L-Band noise level is -130±1 dB.

Prior to configuring the Accent VSAT:
 Verify that one or more licenses for Accent VSAT Continuous transmission are
available in the NMS license file.
If an Accent VSAT Continuous transmission license is not present, the Accent
VSAT can be configured as a regular VSAT.
 Verify that the pack license supporting the CacheMode capabilities on the Accent
VSAT is available in the NMS license file.
If the pack license is not present, the Accent VSAT can be configured as a regular
VSAT.

For information on NMS pack license, refer to Gilat Technical Support personnel.

5. From the ACM Behavior drop-down list, select either of the following:
 Highest MODCOD available - This causes the Accent VSAT to transmit in
Continuous mode at the most efficient ModCod allowed as per a channel
allocation, provided the VSAT have sufficient power to do so. In case the
VSAT lacks capability (transmission power), a lower ModCod will be used. This
must be the default mode for use.
 Minimal MODCOD per traffic rate - This causes the Accent VSAT to
transmit in Continuous mode in accordance with the transmitted bitrate.
When the bitrate increases, the VSAT increases the ModCod up to the
maximal ModCod defined. This mode can only be used if the functionality is
required.
6. If the Minimal MODCOD per traffic rate in ACM Behavior field is selected, set
the Extra BW for MODCOD selection parameter in accordance with the
application requirements (0 - 10,000 Kbps, the default is 50 Kbps). This
parameter indicates an extra bandwidth reservation for avoiding jitter in ModCod,
if the highest ModCod is not always used, and for allowing TCP applications to
achieve maximum throughput.
7. Save and Commit the configuration changes.
8. Reset the Accent VSAT.

Accent System Operation Overview .............................................................................................. 29
Performing Bandwidth Slice Reservation for VSAT Continuous Transmission (on SNPU) .......... 29
Creating New Inbound Channel Reservation (on Accent Scheduler) ............................................ 30

Accent System Operation Overview

After the Accent system has been successfully installed and configured, operate it by
performing procedures in the following order:
1. Using the SkyEdge II Satellite Network Planning Utility, reserve a bandwidth slice
for Continuous transmissions (on page 29).
2. Using the SkyEdge II Accent Scheduler wizard, reserve an Inbound channel for
an Accent VSAT Continuous transmission (on page 30).

Performing Bandwidth Slice Reservation for VSAT

Continuous Transmission (on SNPU)

Bandwidth reservation is done on a per Network Segment basis. If Accent

VSATs operate on different Network Segments, the procedure below has to be
repeated per Network Segment.

In case the space segment to be used for Continuous transmission is

fragmented, more than one slice must be defined.

To reserve a bandwidth slice for a VSAT continuous transmission:

1. On the NMS Browser toolbar, click the SNPU button. The SNPU main window is
displayed.
2. Click Edit on the relevant Network Segment section. The Editing Frequency
Plan for NS Satellite is displayed.

3. On the Space Segment tab, click the Add RF Slice button.

4. In the RF Slice Type field, select Continuous from the drop-down list.
5. In the TXP Name field, type the transponder name. This value MUST be identical
on all bandwidth slices located on the same transponder. It is case-sensitive.
6. In the U/L Start field, type the uplink start frequency (52,000-35,000,000 KHz).
7. In the U/L Stop field, type the uplink stop frequency (52,000-35,000,000 KHz).
8. In the TXP LO field, type the transponder L.O. frequency.
9. Verify that there are no system errors.
10. To apply the changes to the system, click the Submit button.

Creating New Inbound Channel Reservation (on Accent

Scheduler)

Inbound channel reservation for Continuous Accent VSAT transmission is

performed only on the Accent Scheduler wizard. The HSP element does not
support this option.

To create a new Inbound channel reservation for a VSAT Accent using the Accent
Scheduler wizard:
1. On the NMS Browser toolbar, click the Accent button. The Accent Scheduler

A reservation Start time must be at least two minutes ahead of the current time.
A reservation start time cannot be set in the past. In addition, minimal reservation
duration is 3 minutes.

e. Set the Symbol Rate value in the range 300 - 10,000 Ksps.

Use of rates below 700Ksps is not recommended for systems with MCD P/N
570140.

f. In the Center Frequency field, click Suggest. A list of suggested Center

Frequency values pops up. The values that appear are all within the reserved
bandwidth slice(s) (on SNPU).

If necessary, the Center Frequency value can be manually entered.

g. From the Highest MODCOD drop-down list, select the applicable ModCod as
per the designed link budget (i.e., more efficient ModCods require more
power and higher Es/N0). This selection, together with the selected Symbol
Rate determines the maximal throughput over the reserved channel.
h. In the Calculated Values area, verify that the Minimal and Maximal
Channel Data Rate values, as well as the total Bandwidth value, are
appropriate for the application.
5. For the reservation settings to take effect, click the Save changes button.

Stopping/Starting MCD .................................................................................................................. 33
Rebooting MCD Channel ............................................................................................................... 34

Stopping/Starting MCD
This command is used for clearing active allocations from an MCD to allow
replacement of the MCD unit. If the network has other free MCD channels available
(in one or more MCD), the MCD automatic redundancy feature takes care of clearing
the MCD without causing service interruption to active allocations.

MCD management can be started and stopped for all the MCD channels at once.
Partial MCD management is not supported.

To stop an MCD management:

1. In the HUB View window, right-click the relevant MCD icon and select
UnManage or Disable.

For disabling an MCD, use the UnManage command first, and then the Disable
command.

Unlike other hub elements, which continue operating unmanaged, unmanaging

an MCD results in activating the MCD redundancy procedure and in disabling the
MCD.
Hence, when disconnecting an MCD from the NMS, it is recommended either to
disable it or to manually power it off, rather than using only the UnManage
command.

2. Click Yes in the confirmation message is displayed.

When applying the UnManage or Disable command in case there is an
insufficient number of MCD on Continuous transmission, the following warning
message is displayed:

General Guidelines ........................................................................................................................ 49
Replacing MCD .............................................................................................................................. 49

General Guidelines
 The Accent Scheduler allows reservations to be configured for up to two years in
advance. If one or more reservations should extend for a longer period, update
these reservations to delay their End Time.
 In case of many short-term reservations, manually rearrange them every
occasionally to reduce the level of spectrum fragmentation. A fragmented
spectrum may result in lack of ability to define new reservations, though
bandwidth may be available (i.e., though fragmented).

Replacing MCD
In case of malfunction of one (or more) of the MCD channels, the MCD unit must be
replaced.
To replace an MCD unit:
1. In the HUB View window, right-click the relevant MCD icon and select
UnManage or Disable. This command clears active allocations from the MCD
channels and releases them to other available MCD channels (on one or more
MCDs).

For disabling an MCD, use the UnManage command first, and then the Disable
command.

Unlike other hub elements, which continue operating when unmanaged,

unmanaging an MCD results in activating the MCD redundancy procedure and in
disabling the MCD.
Hence, when disconnecting an MCD from the NMS, it is recommended either to
disable it or to manually power it off, rather than using only the UnManage
command.

2. Click Yes. A confirmation message is displayed.

When performing the UnManage or Disable command in case there are
insufficient number of MCDs to be locked on Continuous transmission, the
following warning message is displayed:
VSATs in Continuous transmission will be moved to RCS transmission
since there are no available standby MCD channels. Do you want to
proceed?

3. Disconnect the faulty MCD unit from the power source.
4. Remove the faulty MCD unit from the rack.
5. Install the spare MCD unit to the rack in accordance with the SkyEdge II
architecture (see Section Installing MCD (on page 17)).
6. In the HUB View window, right-click the relevant MCD icon and select Manage.
All the MCD channels are activated.

Any loss of connectivity with an MCD (e.g., due to power failure) having active
allocations results in automatic clearing of active allocations from an MCD
channels and releasing them to other available MCD channels.

Equipment
The procedure is performed remotely from the hub site since the procedure requires
use of a Spectrum Analyzer.

It is highly recommended to perform this procedure at moderate ambient

temperatures, preferably between 20°C and 30°C.

Measurement Procedure
The following procedure is used for manual P1dB measurement.
The procedure includes the following steps:
 Preparation
 Coarse Search
 Fine Search
 Verification

Overview
The SkyEdge II system includes mechanisms for transmission power control. In one
of these mechanisms, each VSAT determines the value of an output attenuator that
corresponds to the 1 dB compression point (P1dB) of its BUC. This saturation search
procedure (Installation Mode) involves transmitting SYNC bursts on the Inbound at
increasing power levels and receiving from the hub Es/N0 measurements taken for
the received transmissions. The procedure is completed upon one of the following
events:
 Finding the P1dB
 Receiving an Es/N0 measurement of 25 dB or higher
 Reaching a limit defined at the VSAT
To support the Forward link, the SkyEdge II VSAT could be installed with a powerful
BUC. In such a case, the saturation search procedure described above is likely to
end due to the Es/N0 measurement limitation being reached, i.e., at some distance
from the P1dB. Consequently, this reflects significantly lower capabilities for the
VSAT and may lead to inability of the VSAT to transmit over the intended Forward
link channels. In such cases, a manual P1dB measurement procedure is required for
finding the true P1dB of the VSAT's BUC.

Prior to starting the manual P1dB Measurement, check VSAT Link Information
Telemetry. Depending on the VSAT Saturation Search State value, the manual
procedure may not be needed.

Determining the Need for Manual P1dB Measurement

When the VSAT comes online, there is a possibility that it locks on within the proper
range and therefore the P1dB manual process can be skipped. This can be verified
using the VSAT Link Information telemetry.
To access VSAT telemetry:
1. Access the VSATs View window.
2. Browse to the relevant VSAT icon.
3. Right-click the relevant VSAT icon and select Telemetries. The VSAT Telemetries
window opens.
4. Select Access II Return Link (Inbound) Link Information Link
Information.
5. Under Frequency Correction section, check the Saturation Search State value:
 COMPLETE- GOOD 1dB – this means that the VSAT is in the proper range and
there is no need for the manual search.
 NOT STARTED YET – in this case, the operator should wait for a few minutes,
refresh the VSAT telemetry, and check Saturation Search State value
again.
 IN PROGRESS – in this case, the operator should wait for a few minutes,
refresh the VSAT telemetry, and check Saturation Search State value
again.
 STOPPED- OB FADE - in this case it is likely that the problem is not
VSAT-specific. The operator should verify that the OB Fade issue is solved,
then refresh the VSAT telemetry and check Saturation Search State value
again.
 STOPPED- LOGOFF - in this case, the operator should wait for a few minutes,
refresh the VSAT telemetry, and check Saturation Search State value
again.
 STOPPED- TFP UPDATE - in this case, the operator should wait for a few
minutes, refresh the VSAT telemetry, and check Saturation Search State
value again.
 COMPLETE- REACH VSAT LIMIT – in this case, it is needed to perform the
manual search.
 COMPLETE- REACH MCR LIMIT - in this case, it is needed to perform the
manual search.
 COMPLETE- BAD 1dB – in this case, the operator should check system
configuration and VSAT installation.

Measurement Procedure

General Notes and Preparation

While performing the procedure described herein, the BUC is expected to radiate
at full power ratings towards the satellite.
If the link is not designed for operating at such power levels or if transmitting at
such power level is expected to result in interferences at the satellite, do NOT
perform this procedure as described herein. Instead, refer to Section Alternative
Measurement Procedure (on page 58).

To perform the procedure:

 Determine a vacant test frequency for use during the measurement procedure. It
is recommended that the test frequency would be located at the edge of the
space segment allocated for the network (i.e., within the guard band), preferably
at the side of the narrow band channels and as far from them as possible in order
to avoid other transmissions influencing the measurement.
 Log in to the SkyEdge II NMS via one of its browsers and locate the applicable
VSAT.
 Confirm the VSAT is online and responding (e.g., by polling the CPU telemetry).
 Connect a Spectrum Analyzer to one of the MCR L-band monitoring ports (or to
any other monitoring ports for the signal received from the satellite).
In addition, observe the following:
 In case the system includes two VSATs (VSAT Redundancy configuration), the
procedure must be performed separately for each VSAT.
 In case of a redundant BUC, the procedure must be performed for both BUCs and
the attenuator value programmed into the VSATs must match the BUC with the
lower P1dB (i.e., the one for which the P1dB corresponds to a higher attenuator
value).

Coarse Search
To perform the coarse search:
1. Set the Spectrum Analyzer to the following initial setting:
Span 5MHz
RBW/VBW Auto
Detector Peak
Center Frequency The L-band frequency at which the test
signal is received

2. From the NMS Browser, open the CW Control window and place the VSAT in CW
mode. To access the CW On window, right-click the relevant VSAT icon and
select Commands Access II CW On.
3. Set the CW parameters as follows:
 Set the test frequency (either in L-band or in Up-Link frequency)
 Set the VSAT attenuator to minimum value (0dB)

December, 2013 53
Proprietary and Confidential
 Set the VSAT duration to at least 300 seconds
 Turn the CW signal on (click the Execute button)
On the Spectrum Analyzer, observe the carrier signal on the expected frequency.
To verify that the correct signal is observed, turn the signal off and on again.
If the signal is not present in the spectrum at the expected frequency, verify that
the frequencies are properly programmed into the VSAT and the Spectrum
Analyzer and that the CW duration time has not expired yet.
4. On the Spectrum Analyzer, zoom in on the carrier signal: set the carrier to center
and reduce the span until nearby signals are no longer observed. The final span
recommended is 100kHz.
5. From the CW Control window, set the attenuator to the maximum value (60dB).
The carrier signal is expected either to be no longer visible in the Spectrum
Analyzer or to be visible at a much lower level.
6. While monitoring the spectrum, from the CW Control window decrease the
attenuation in steps of 10 dB until the carrier signal is visible again in the
Spectrum Analyzer at the expected frequency.
If the signal is not present by the time the attenuator reaches the 20dB mark,
verify that the frequencies are properly programmed into the VSAT and the
Spectrum Analyzer and that the CW duration time has not expired yet.
7. Once the carrier signal is visible in the spectrum, from the CW control window
change the attenuator value until the signal is received with C/N of at least 20
dB. Measure the signal power at the signal peak and record the measured value
and the attenuator setting.
These are the PWR_REF and the \-ATT_REF\- values, respectively.

To read accurate and repetitive signal levels (in any attenuation setting used):
 Verify signal level is at least 20dB higher than noise level
 Increase the resolution bandwidth (RBW) of the Spectrum Analyzer
one or two steps or/and activate an averaging function

The following table is an example of reference recording:

Step Attenuator Delta from Power Delta from Calculated
Value [dB] ATT_REF [dB] Reading PWR_REF Compressio
[dBm] [dB] n [dB]
Reference 33 -30.8

8. From the CW control window, decrease the attenuator by 5dB at a time. For each
step, use the Spectrum Analyzer to measure the signal power and calculate the
delta in signal power and in attenuator value compared to the reference values
previously recorded (PWR_REF and ATT_REF). Once the change in signal power
level is significantly lower (by at least 0.5dB) than the change in attenuator value
(i.e. compression is more than 0.5dB), increase the attenuation back by 5dB and
move to the next step.
Record the values measured in each point in order to achieve proper
documentation of the installed BUC.

Measurement Procedure

It should be noted that it is possible for the change (increase) in signal power to
exceed the change in attenuator value, e.g. due to a phenomena of gain
expansion. However, this is a normal condition and the procedure should be
continued until the change in signal level is significantly less than the change in
attenuator value, as explained above.

The following is an example of recording results of this step. As displayed in the

table, the step ends when the calculated compression exceeds 0.5dB (1.5dB in this
case).

Fine Search
To perform the fine search:
9. From the CW Control window, decrease the attenuation by 1dB at a time. For
each step, use the Spectrum Analyzer to measure the signal power and calculate
the delta in signal power and in attenuator value compared to the reference
values previously recorded. When the total increase in signal power level
becomes 1dB less than the total decrease in attenuation, record the measured
power level and attenuator settings (PWR_CW_P1dB, ATT_CW_P1dB,
correspondingly).
The following table shows an example of recording results of this step:

As the table shows, this step ends when the calculated compression exceeds 1dB
(1.5dB in this case). Since P1dB is between 18dB and 19dB attenuator values,
and since 0.7 is closer to 1 than 1.5, 19dB is chosen as ATT_CW_P1DB.

Verification
To perform the procedure verification, perform the following:
10. Confirm the attenuator value at CW_P1dB by performing the following
measurements:
 From CW_P1dB, increase the attenuation by 5dB (ATT_CW_P1dB + 5), use
the Spectrum Analyzer to measure the signal power and verify that it had
decreased by approximately 4dB (PWR_CW_P1dB – 4).
 From CW_P1dB, increase the attenuation by 10dB (ATT_CW_P1dB + 10), use
the Spectrum Analyzer to measure the signal power and verify that it had
decreased by approximately 9dB (PWR_CW_P1dB – 9).
 Set the attenuator to 0 (transmit in saturated mode) and measure the signal
power (PWR_SAT). Confirm that:
PWR_SAT – PWR_CW_P1dB  1.2dB

11. If any of the above confirmation measurements fail (the decrease in signal level
does not match the increase in attenuator value by more than 0.5 dB or the
distance from saturation exceeds 1.2 dB), repeat the procedure (steps 6 to 9)
and try to find the P1dB more accurately.

(ATT_P1dB) at 2.5 dB back-off from ATT_CW_P1dB.

Alternative Measurement Procedure

In case the BUC's transmission at full power ratings is expected (according to link
budget calculation) to result in interferences at the satellite, determine the VSAT
attenuator's value corresponding to the maximum transmission power level allowed
in either of the following ways:
 Perform a partial procedure at clear-sky conditions (on page 58).
 Perform an on-site measurement without transmitting to the satellite
(on page 59).

Performing Partial Measurement

To perform a partial procedure at clear-sky conditions:
1. Determine the maximum power allowed for transmission from the BUC (using
link budget calculation) and consider an additional 1.5 dB back-off (see step 3).
2. Use a link budget calculator to calculate a reception C/N ratio at the hub for a CW
signal transmitted from the BUC at the determined maximum power level.
3. Perform the Measurement Procedure (on page 51) until the C/N ratio at the hub
reaches the calculated C/N ratio or until the P1dB is found, whichever comes
first.
 If the P1dB is found prior to reaching the calculated C/N ratio, perform the
measurement procedure without any change.

58 Accent System
Proprietary and Confidential
Alternative Measurement Procedure

 If the P1dB is not found prior to reaching the calculated C/N ratio, skip the
Verification steps (on page 56) and determine the ATT_CW_P1dB (i.e., the
attenuator value corresponding to P1dB when measured with a CW signal) to
be the attenuation for which the calculated C/N ratio has been reached.
Calculate the minimum attenuation to be configured to the VSAT (ATT_P1dB)
as follows:
ATT_P1dB = ATT_CW_P1dB + 1.5dB

The back-off compensates for a measurement deviation caused by using a CW

signal (instead of a modulated signal) and for expected changes in P1dB due to
temperature and frequency variances.
However, if the P1dB is not found, a smaller back-off can be assumed. In this
case, set the back-off to 1.5 dB instead of 2.5 dB.

4. Set the VSAT minimum attenuation as described in Section Verification

(on page 56).

Performing On-Site Measurement

The procedure described herein can be performed only on site (it cannot be
performed remotely, e.g., from the hub).
The procedure must be performed by an experienced technician, who is familiar
with the P1dB measurement procedure and with the equipment required for
performing it.

The on-site measurement procedure requires a use of the following equipment:

 A power meter
 A power sensor
 A coupler of 20 dB or higher, in accordance with the BUC ratings (needed for
limiting the total power at the power sensor to no more than 1 Watt)
 Termination for the BUC in accordance with the BUC ratings
 Appropriate tools for fastening and loosening the various screws and bolts
associated with the BUC
To perform an on-site measurement without transmitting to the satellite:
1. Verify that the BUC is disconnected from the antenna feed and powered off.

Do not perform any maintenance activities on the BUC while the BUC is
powered. Disconnect the power prior to any maintenance activity:
 For BUCs with power supply, disconnect the power supply or switch
it off.
 For BUCs receiving DC power over the IFL cable, verify that the
other end of the cable is disconnected from the IDU.

December, 2013 59
Proprietary and Confidential
2. Connect a power sensor and a termination matching the BUC ratings to the BUC's
output port using a coupler:
a. Mount the coupler on to the BUC’s output port.
b. Mount the termination on to the non-attenuated output of the coupler.
c. Mount the power sensor on to the attenuated output of the coupler.

Use a coupler with appropriate attenuation (e.g., 20 dB), so that the power levels
at the attenuated output of the coupler will not exceed the maximum ratings of
the power sensor and the power meter.

Transmitting from a non-terminated BUC is dangerous and may result in

personal injury and in damage to the BUC. Do not attempt such
transmission under any circumstances!

3. Connect the Power Meter to the Power Sensor, and then power on the BUC.

Figure 34: Performing On-Site Measurement

4. Determine the maximum power allowed for transmission from the BUC (using
link budget calculation) and consider an additional 1.5 dB back-off (see step 5).
5. Perform the procedure using measurements from the Power Sensor (instead of
using a Spectrum Analyzer) until the maximum power is reached or until the
P1dB is found, whichever comes first. Use a PC connected to the IDU for issuing
the necessary CW commands (using the SkyManage web page).
 If the P1dB is found prior to reaching the calculated maximum power, perform
the measurement procedure without any change.

60 Accent System
Proprietary and Confidential
Alternative Measurement Procedure

 If the P1dB is not found prior to reaching the calculated maximum power, skip
the Verification steps and determine the ATT_CW_P1dB (i.e., the attenuator
value corresponding to P1dB when measured with a CW signal) to be the
attenuation for which the calculated maximum power has been reached.
Calculate the minimum attenuation to be configured to the VSAT (ATT_P1dB)
as follows:
ATT_P1dB = ATT_CW_P1dB + 1.5dB

The back-off compensates for a measurement deviation caused by using a CW

signal (instead of a modulated signal) and for expected changes in P1dB due to
temperature and frequency variances.
However, if the P1dB is not found, a smaller back-off can be assumed. In this
case, set the back-off to 1.5dB instead of 2.5dB.
