TRADITIONAL AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE ACT

In our country, Republic Act No. 8423 or the Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act
of 1997 (TAMA) provisioned the creation of the Philippine Institute of Traditional and
Alternative Healthcare (PITAHC), which works closely with the Department of Health. This
PITAHC is also the law-making body with regards to the effective use of traditional and
alternative medicine.

A complementary medicine is availed and integrated together with traditional

medicine. On the other hand, alternative medicine is offered in place of traditional medicine

Traditional medicine as defined by the World health Organization is “the sum total of
the knowledge, skills, and practices based on the theories, beliefs, and experiences
indigenous to different cultures, whether explicable or not, used in the maintenance of health
as well as in the prevention, diagnosis, improvement or treatment of physical and mental
illness.

There are four major domains of complementary and alternative medicine: biology-
based practices, energy medicine, manipulative and body-based practices, and mind-body
medicine.
1. Biology-based practices - are the use of substances found in nature such as herbs,
foods, and vitamins to strengthen, heal, and balance the body is considered
biologically based practice.
2. Energy medicine - uses magnetic fields or biofields in belief that energy fields may
enter various points in the body.
3. Manipulative and body-based practices – are bodily-kinesthetic in nature and are
concerned with movement therapy.
4. Mind-body medicine – uses mental exercises in belief that the brain is central to the
health of an individual.

Naturopathy – is a complete system of natural healthcare that believes the body has
the knowledge to heal itself. It is a mixture of natural remedies that may include herbs, air,
water, and sunlight, hydropath, diet and exercise.

Inspired by the wonders of natural healing and

alternative medicine and moved by her strong belief in
the propagation of such, Dr. Edinell Calvario (a.k.a. Dr.
E) pursued higher studies at The Open International
University for Complementary Medicines based in
Colombo, Sri Lanka earning her a Master’s Degree in
Alternative Medicine (The Fellowship Register of Royal
