Welcome to Health Education 7 Fourth Quarter Module 3 on Prevention and


Control of Non-communicable Diseases!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators


from Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by Officer in Charge, Schools
Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with
the Local Government of Pasig thru its Mayor, Hon. Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The
writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the five C’s namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

LESSON

Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases

Non-communicable or chronic diseases are diseases of long duration


and generally slow in progression. It is a diseases that cannot be
transmitted. The four main types of non-communicable diseases are
cardiovascular diseases (like heart attacks and stroke), cancer, chronic
respiratory diseases (such as chronic obstructed pulmonary disease and
asthma) and diabetes.

Non-communicable Diseases (NCDS) are the top killers in the


Philippines. Of the total deaths in 2016, 57% are due to the “fatal four”
NCDs, namely cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and chronic
respiratory disease. It is estimated that 35 to 50 percent of NCD deaths
occurred before age 60 years.
Key Elements for leading a Healthy Life

Ways to prevent non – communicable diseases?

1. Healthy diet
Specific recommendations for a healthy diet include: eating more fruit,
vegetables, legumes, nuts and grains; cutting down on salt, sugar and fats.
This can prevent you from risk factors of chronic diseases including
cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and other conditions like obesity.

2. Physical activity
Regular exercise and activity help protect against the development of
non – communicable diseases. It also helps to ensure good bone health and
helps to prevent related problems such as cancer as well as risk of fractures.

3. Normal weight
Weight should be adjusted according to the Body Mass Index (BMI) of
a person. Children should not be overweight as it can affect them in the
coming stages of life.

4. Avoiding tobacco and alcohol


Alcohol and tobacco contain harmful substances which could lead to
mouth and lung cancer.
5. Peer pressure
Consumption of alcohol in teens can lead to abuse and violence
among them. It is usually caused because of peer pressure.

6. Pollution
It is one of the causes of non-communicable and frequently observed
in polluted areas.

7. Discipline
Be responsible to your health

How to cure non – communicable diseases?


 Visit and consult to professional doctors
 Have a medical treatment
 People have the right to get proper treatment at affordable prices. It is
also support by the DOH.

MORE FILIPINOS EXPOSED TO NCD RISK FACTORS


A significant proportion of Filipino adults continue to be exposed to
the NCD risks of tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diets and physical
inactivity. This makes millions of Filipinos vulnerable in developing NCDs in
the future.

Activity 1: My Advice

Directions: Read the given situation with your own understanding and
assessment. Then answer the questions that follow.

Student A and Student B went to a fast food chain; Student A ordered


hamburger, large fries, and spaghetti. Student B asked for steak, and fried
chicken. When the food was served, they use a lot of salt.
They did not had any check-up for several years. After eating, they
went to the restroom and smoked. They do this every day.

Guide Questions:
1. What diseases they might acquire?
2. What particular habits might have contributed to these disease?
3. If you are their close friend, what advice can you give them to avoid
these diseases?

Activity 2: Write and Share

Directions: In a sheet of bond paper, formulate a slogan about “Prevention


on Non-communicable Diseases. The slogan must contain at least 5 to 10
words only. Then make short explanation of your work.

healthy. Make a habit of regular medical check-up. Health is wealth.
