HEALTH-RELATED LAWS

21 Million Or 1 out of 5 Filipinos are adolescents aged 10-19 years old


(PSA, 2020). Most are healthy but still are prone to injuries, illness, and even
premature death. The health issues of the adolescent like you hinder your ability to
grow and develop your full potential that could be of great help to become a healthy
and productive citizen. To address these health issues and concern, existing health-
related laws will keep you safe and guarded against health risks There are 5 main
health issues in the Philippines that may affect adolescents; Road Accidents,
Tobacco Use, Dangerous Drug Use, Reproductive Health, and Cybercrime.
• ROAD ACCIDENTS
-One of the most frequent causes of death among Filipinos.
Republic Act No. 8750 (Seat Belts Use Act of 1999) secures and
safeguards passengers and drivers of vehicles from further injuries in case of
vehicular accidents and prohibits children from sitting in the front seat.
Republic Act No. 10586 (Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Law)
penalizes drivers who get caught driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs
or other similar substances.
• TOBACCO USE
-1 in 5 Filipino students is a cigarette smoker (DOH, 2007). And
according to a 2016 report from DOH, 200 Filipinos die every day due to
smoking-related diseases.
Republic Act No. 9211 (Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003) protects
people from the sale, use and advertisement of hazardous tobacco products.

• DANGEROUS DRUG USE
-According to Dangerous Drug Board (2016) there are 1.8 million current
drug users in the Philippines, 4.8 million Filipinos report having used illegal
drugs at least once in their lives.
Republic Act No. 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of
2002) protects citizens from the harmful effects of dangerous drugs to their
physical and mental well-being.
• REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH
-According to Dr. Natividad (2013) 36.2% of Filipino College and 43.5%
of High School graduates admitted to having engaged in premarital sex. In
addition, 66.7% and 79.9% did not use any protection at first pre-marital sex.
These scenarios are often the causes of early pregnancy and infections.
Republic Act 10354 (Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive
Health Act) provides for maternal and child healthcare, family planning, and
responsible parenthood.
Republic Act No. 8504 (Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control Act
of 1998) provides assistance for the prevention and control of AIDS.
• CYBERCRIME
-Cyber refers to a computer, thus, cybercrime is any crime committed
in cyberspace.
Republic Act No. 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012)
prohibition of cybersex, child pornography, unsolicited commercial
communications, and computer-related identity theft.
