Handout: Variation Coefficient and Standard Deviation

Introduction:

Variation Coefficient (CV):

 Also referred to as the coefficient of variation or relative standard deviation.

 It represents a standardized measure of dispersion for a probability or frequency

distribution.

 The CV is calculated as the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean. Specifically, it's the
ratio of the sample standard deviation to the sample mean: CV=SD/M.

Reporting in Orange:

 In Orange, for each variable:

 The CV is reported under the label "dispersion."

 The mean is reported under the label "center."

 With these two variables, one can deduce the third: the standard deviation. It can be easily
calculated by multiplying the variation coefficient by the mean: sSD=CV×M.
