Read the following passage and choose the best answer for each question.
Long ago a lot of people thought the moon was a god. Other people thought it was just a
light in the sky. And others thought it was a big ball of cheese!
Then telescopes were made. And men saw that the moon was really another world. They
wondered what it was like. They dreamed of going there.
On July 20, 1969, that dream came true. Two American men landed on the moon. Their
names were Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin.
The first thing the men found was that the moon is covered with dust. The dust is so thick
that the men left footprints where they walked. Those were the first marks a living had
ever made on the moon. And they could stay there for years and years. There is no wind
or rain to wipe them off.
The two men walked on the moon for hours. They picked up rocks to bring back to earth
for study. They dug up dirt to bring back. They set up machines to find out things people
wanted to know. Then they climbed back into their moon landing craft.
Next day the landing craft roared as the two men took off from the moon. They joined
Michael Collins in the spaceship that waited for them above the moon. Then they were
off on their long trip back to earth.
Behind them they left the plains and tall mountains of the moon. They left the machines
they had set up. And they left footprints that may last forever.

Read the passage and choose the correct answer to complete each of the following
questions.
The bee, like the ant, is a social insect. Bees live in groups in a hive, and every bee does
certain work that helps the other members of the group. In a beehive there are three kinds
of bees: the queen bee, the drones, and the workers. The worker bees go from flower to
flower collecting nectar, or juice, which is composed mostly of sugar mixed with water.
Bees draw this nectar into the honey sacks of their bodies, and enzymes in their bodies
turn the nectar into honey. This newly made honey oozes from the underside of the bees
and is stored in cells in the hive to be used as food during the winter months. Some
people are in the honey business and keep hundreds of hives. Beekeepers remove honey
from the hives and pack it in bottles or jars. Honey usually appears as a clear golden-
colored liquid, but this depends on the kind of flower from which the bees have taken the
nectar.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each question.
Accustomed though we are to speaking of the films made before 1927 as "silent", the
film has never been, in the full sense of the word, silent. From the very beginning, music
was regarded as an indispensable accompaniment; when the Lumiere films were shown at
the first public film exhibition in the United States in February 1896, they were
accompanied by piano improvisations on popular tunes. At first, the music played bore
no special relationship to the films; an accompaniment of any kind was sufficient.
Within a very short time, however, the incongruity of playing lively music to a solemn
film became apparent, and film pianists began to take some care in matching their pieces
to the mood of the film.
As movie theaters grew in number and importance, a violinist, and perhaps a cellist,
would be added to the pianist in certain cases, and in the larger movie theaters small
orchestras were formed. For a number of years the selection of music for each film
program rested entirely in the hands of the conductor or leader of the orchestra, and very
often the principal qualification for holding such a position was not skill or taste so much
as the ownership of a large personal library of musical pieces. Since the conductor
seldom saw the films until the night before they were to be shown (if, indeed, the
conductor was lucky enough to see them then), the musical arrangement was normally
improvised in the greatest hurry.
To help meet this difficulty, film distributing companies started the practice of publishing
suggestions for musical accompaniments. In 1909, for example, the Edison Company
began issuing with their films such indications of mood as "pleasant, "sad", "lively". The
suggestions became more explicit, and so emerged the musical cue sheet containing
indications of mood, the titles of suitable pieces of music, and precise directions to show
where one piece led into the next. Certain films had music especially composed for them.
The most famous of these early special scores was that composed and arranged for D.W.
Griffith's film Birth of a Nation, which was released in 1915.

English was originally the language of England, and soon it has become the primary or
secondary language of many former British colonies such as the United States, Canada,
Australia, and India. Nowadays, it is the most international language in the world. There
an several factors that make the English language essential to communication in our
current time.
First of all, it is the most common foreign language. This means that two people who
come from different countries (for example, a Mexican and a Swede) usually use English
as a common English to communicate. English is also essential to the field of education.
In many countries, children are taught and encouraged to learn English as a second
language. At the university level, students in many countries study almost all their
subjects in English in order to make the material more accessible to international
students. On the Internet, the majority of websites are written and created in English.
Even sites in other languages often give you the option to translate the site. It is the
primary language of the press: more newspapers and books are written in English than in
any other language, and no matter where in the world you are, you will find some of
these books and newspapers available.
Although many people think that it is very difficult and confusing, English is actually the
easiest language of the world to learn because there are so many resources available. As
soon as you decide you want to learn, there are thousands of resources on the Internet and
in bookstores. With good understanding and communication in English, you can travel
around the globe. Because it is the international language for foreigners, it is easy to get
assistance and help in every part of the world. You can test it by online travel. Any travel
booking site you can find will have English as a booking option.

When many people think of women in Asian culture, they think of a male dominated
society where women don’t have as many rights as their male counterparts. However, the
Filipino are different. Filipino women have always enjoyed greater equality than women
in other nations in Southeast Asia.
For starters, Filipino women today serve as heads in the family arrangement, handing the
money, acting as religious mentors and even arranging marriages for their sons and
daughters. This is a sharp contrast to women being subjugated to their husbands.
This does not mean that they have equality everywhere. In the workplace, Filipino
women are paid less and are often hired for lower positions even if they are qualified to
earn more money. On the home front, women carry a heavy burden in the homes in order
to support them financially while men keep their money and are not obligated to the
family.
Thankfully, strides are being made to equalize this perception of inequality. Human
Resources Managements are seeing to it that a lot more women hold high ranking
positions in large and small organizations. More women are holding managerial positions
in banks, government, and multinational companies.
Even though they have had a female president, involvement in politics is not considered
women’s business, and many women still hold to the tradition that a woman cannot take
a higher position than her husband. Part of this mindset is due to the effect of
colonization on Filipino women.
Like women in many parts of the world, Filipino women have had to fight for their
proper place in their society. They have worked hard to extend themselves beyond the
confines of their homes and show that they have the strength and power to control
business and politics.
28. In order to have equality in every sector in society, women have to _________.
C. men earn more support the family and keep the money
D. both women and men work but men keep the money
32. All of the following are true about Filipino women today EXCEPT that _________.

Section III. Read the following passage and choose the letter A, B, C, or D to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions. (1.0 pt)
It’s often said that we learn things at the wrong time. University students
frequently do the minimum of work because they’re crazy about a good social life
instead. Children often scream before their piano practice because it’s so boring. They
have to be given gold stars and medals to be persuaded to swim, or have to be bribed to
take exams.
But the story is different when you’re older. Over the years, I’ve done my share of
adult learning. At 30, I went to a college and did courses in History and English. It was
an amazing experience. For starters, I was paying, so there was no reason to be late – I
was the one frowning and drumming my fingers if the tutor was late, not the other way
round. Indeed, if I could persuade him to linger for an extra five minutes, it was a bonus,
not a nuisance. I wasn’t frightened to ask questions, and homework was a pleasure not a
pain. When I passed an exam, I had passed it for me and me alone, not for my parents or
my teachers.
The satisfaction I got was entirely personal. Some people fear going back to
school because they worry that their brains have got rusty. But the joy is that, although
some parts have rusted up, your brain has learnt all kinds of other things since you were
young. It has learnt to think independently and flexibly and is much better at relating one
thing to another. What you lose in the rust department, you gain in the maturity
department. In some ways, age is a positive plus. For instance, when you’re older, you
get less frustrated. Experience has told you that, if you’re calm and simply do something
carefully again and again, eventually you’ll get the hang of it.
The confidence you have in other areas – from being able to drive a car, perhaps –
means that if you can’t, say, build a chair instantly, you don’t, like a child, want to
destroy your first pathetic attempts. Maturity tells you that you will, with application,
eventually get there. I hated piano lessons at school, but I was good at music. And
coming back to it, with a teacher who could explain why certain exercises were useful
and with musical concepts that, at the age of ten, I could never grasp, was magical.
Initially, I did feel a bit strange, thumping out a piece that I’d played for my school
exams, with just as little comprehension of what the composer intended as I’d had all
those years before. But soon, complex emotions that I never knew poured out from my
fingers, and suddenly I could understand why practice makes perfect.

Section I. Read the passage and write a summary of about 120 words. (1.0 pt)
Advertisements are actually very useful though we sometimes feel annoyed when
they interrupt our favorite television programs. They provide us with free information on
the products and services. There are two types of advertisements. The informative
advertisements are the ones which provide us with the details of the products or services.
This information is especially useful if the product or service is new. For instance, when
we need to buy a computer, advertisements describing the latest models and their
different functions would be extremely helpful. However, only a minority of the
advertisements are informative ones. Many of them belong to the second category-
the persuasive kind. These advertisements not only tell us more about the products, at the
same time, they persuade customers to buy them by claiming that their products are
superior to the rivalry ones. These claims may sometimes be untrue.
Besides being informative and persuasive, advertisements also help to subsidize the
prices of magazines and newspapers. Our newspapers are sold at a low price of about one
dollar, owing to the advertisements in the papers; otherwise, the price would have been
higher.
While advertisements can be good helpers for shopping, they do have their
shortcomings. Most advertisements aim to sell only. Faults of the products or services are
usually hidden from the consumers. Hence, sometimes, we feel deceived if the product or
service we bought does not turn out the way the advertisements claim to be.
Sometimes, advertisements by rival competitors can get very intensive, especially when
there are many firms producing similar products. One common example is the washing
powder. There are so many advertisements for the different brands that customers
sometimes get confused over what they should buy. Furthermore, having more
advertisements would mean that the production cost of the firm would be increased.
These rises in cost are usually passed on to the consumers in the form of higher prices.
