Problems

1. For a continuous frequency distribution, prove that mode is given by the formula :

(f1 − f0 )
ℓ+
2f1 − f0 − f2
where ℓ is the lower limit, h is the magnitude of the modal class, f1 is the frequency of
the modal class, f0 is the frequency of the class preceding the modal class, and f1 is the
frequency of the class succeeding the modal class.

2. Consider the probability mass function given by

x + r − 1 r−1
P (X = x) := p (1 − p)x ; for x = 0, 1, 2, · · · .
r−1
:= 0, otherwise.

(a) Prove that µX < Var(X).

P
(b) If p = P1 and 1 − p = Q , then show that X behaves as a Poisson random variable
as P → 0, r → ∞ such that rP = λ (finite parameter of the corresponding Poisson
distribution).

3. Let X follows Poisson(λ). Then prove the following recurrence relation :

λ
P (X = x + 1) = P (X = x).
x+1

4. Consider the probability density function given by

( −x λ−1
e x
Γ(λ)
, if λ > 0, 0 < x < ∞
fX (x) :=
0, otherwise.

X−E[X]
Prove that Z := √ behaves as a Standard Normal random variable.
Var[X]

X1 +X2 +···+Xn
5. If X
 i follows
 N (µ, σ 2 ) for i = 1, 2, 3, · · · , n; then prove that X := n
follows
