Exercise Set # 01 : Integrals

”Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.” (Albert EINSTEIN)

Exercise 1
Let the following functions :
1

 f (x) = ; [a, b] = [0, 2]

 x

 f (x) = x; [a, b] = [0, 4]
 f (x) = sin x; [a, b] = [0, π ]

2
1. Estimate the area bounded by the graph of f (x),the x−axis and the lines x = a and x = b using

four rectangles and right endpoints.

2. Sketch the plot of f (x) and the rectangles. Is your estimate and overestimate or and understimate

of the true area. Explain your reasoning.

3. Repeat the first question using the left endpoints.

Exercise 2
1. Use the definition of the area of the region to find an expression for the area under the graph of
2x
f (x) as a limit. Do not evaluate the limit. f (x) = , 1 ≤ x ≤ 3.
