Land Acknowledgement
Toronto is in the 'Dish With One Spoon Territory’. The Dish With
One Spoon is a treaty between the Anishinaabe, Mississaugas
and Haudenosaunee that bound them to share the territory and
protect the land. Subsequent Indigenous Nations and peoples,
Europeans and all newcomers have been invited into this treaty
in the spirit of peace, friendship and respect.

Construction Industry
• Construction employs over 1.4 million people in Canada
• It generates 7.5 percent of Canada’s GDP (7.2 percent of
Ontario’s GDP)
• Construction as an industry
o It is large
o It is fragmented
o It is project-based

Why are construction projects delayed?

1/5/2024 S. Madeh Piryonesi, Project Management 5

Why construction projects go
overtime or over budget?
• Is it only transportation?
• What about other projects?

1/5/2024 S. Madeh Piryonesi, Project Management 6

Delay and cost overrun is not very
unusual in construction

Construction Project Management
• Definition of project by PMBOK*:
“A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. The
temporary nature of projects indicates a beginning and an end to the project work or a
phase of the project work. Projects can stand alone or be part of a program or portfolio.”

• Project management:
“The application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to
project activities to meet project requirements. Project management refers to guiding the
project work to deliver the intended outcomes. Project teams can achieve the outcomes
using a broad range of approaches (e.g., predictive, hybrid, and adaptive).”

Note: PMBOK 7th Edition vs 6th Edition
• The 7th edition of PMBOK was released in 2021
• Instead of knowledge areas, it has eight performance domains:
o Stakeholders
o Team
o Development, Approach and Life Cycle
o Planning
o Project Work
o Delivery
o Measurement
o Uncertainty

• Predictive (or waterfall)
• How does the price of
changes vary over time?

Planning
• It involves selecting missions and objectives and the
action to achieve them, requires decision making, that
choosing future courses of action from among
alternatives

• The reasons for project planning

o Eliminate or reduce uncertainty
o Improve efficiency of the operation
o Obtain a better understanding of the objectives
o Provide a basis for monitoring and controlling work

1/5/2024 S. Madeh Piryonesi, Project Management 17

Planning
• Lack of planning leads to:
o Wild enthusiasm
o Disillusionment
o Chaos
o Search for the guilty
o Punishment of the innocent
o Promotion of the nonparticipants

1/5/2024 S. Madeh Piryonesi, Project Management 18

Controlling
• Steps of Controlling:

o Measuring: determining through reports the degree to which progress

toward objectives is being made

o Evaluating: determining cause of and possible ways to act on

significant deviations from planned performance

o Correcting: taking control action to correct an unfavorable trend or to

take advantage of an unusually favorable trend
• Examples?

1/5/2024 S. Madeh Piryonesi, Project Management 19

What does planning mean to
construction projects?
• Choosing technology and construction method, defining
major tasks, estimating the required resources and duration
of tasks

• A good construction plan is the basis for developing a schedule

and budget for work
