SUMMARY UNIT 2 MODERN LIFE

Modernization is a process in which society or a system adapts to changing times,

technology and new values that are developing. The opposite of the word modern, namely
traditional, refers to behavior, views and actions that are based on values and culture that are
passed down from generation to generation without much change or adaptation to changing
times or new technology.

• Present Perfect
Subjek + have/has + past participle
Note :
Have digunakan untuk subjek I, you, we, they.
Has digunakan untuk subjek he, she, it.
Past participle or V3

Example :
"Scientists have discovered a new species of butterfly in the Amazon rainforest."
Subject: Scientists
Verb: discovered
Past participle: discovered

• Simple Past Tense

The simple past tense, also known as past simple or preterite, is a verb tense used
to describe completed actions or events that happened entirely in the past.
Subject + verb in past tense (V2) + Object.

Example :
"The company has released its latest product to the market."

Positive: He finished (verb 2) his homework last night.

Negative: They didn't attend (base form) the meeting yesterday.
Question: Did she visit her parents last weekend?

• Talk About Technology

Technology refers to all the tools and methods used to provide the needs and comfort of
human life. The use of technology began when humans began to convert natural resources
into simple tools.
Some examples of technology:
1. E-commerce platforms: start buying and selling goods online without having to go to a
physical store.
2. Smart home devices: Such as smart speakers and connected lights, to control electronic
devices at home automatically or remotely.

Technology impact :
- Positive: Technological advances have resulted in significant improvements in efficiency,
productivity and quality of life in many areas of life.
- Negative: However, it needs to be acknowledged that technology can also have negative
impacts, such as environmental problems, dependence on gadgets, and social disparities that
further widen divisions in society.

• Present Perfect
Subject + has/have + Past Participle (verb in its third form) + Object (optional)
Example :
- Mobile phones have transformed the way we stay connected with each other.
- Online learning has revolutionized access to education worldwide.

• Present Perfect Continous

Subjek + have/has + been + verb-ing
Example :
- Governments have been investing in infrastructure to support economic growth.
- Artists have been exploring new mediums for creative expression.

• Responding to Suggestion
Responding to suggestions means responding to recommendations or ideas put forward
by other people. The response can be in the form of agreement, rejection, or adjustment to the
suggestion.
Example :
Suggestion:
"What if we held a virtual team meeting to discuss this project?"
Positive Feedback:
"I agree, it's a good idea. We can use video conferencing platforms to stay connected."
Negative Response:
"Sorry, I don't agree with that idea. I think face-to-face meetings are more effective in
ensuring better understanding."
Modified Response:
"I think it could be a good alternative. However, what if we tried a combination of virtual and
face-to-face meetings to maximize collaboration?"
