CHAPTER 1

PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

While most people probably picture computers and cell phones when the subject of

technology comes up, technology is not merely a product of the modern era. For example, fire

and stone tools were important forms of technology developed during the Stone Age. Just as the

availability of digital technology shapes how we live today, the creation of stone tools changed

how premodern humans lived and how well they ate. From the first calculator, invented in 2400

BCE in Babylon in the form of an abacus, to the predecessor of the modern computer, created in

1882 by Charles Babbage, all of our technological innovations are advancements on previous

iterations. And indeed, all aspects of our lives today are influenced by technology. In agriculture,

the introduction of machines that can till, thresh, plant, and harvest greatly reduced the need for

manual labour, which in turn meant there were fewer rural jobs, which led to the urbanization of

society, as well as lowered birthrates because there was less need for large families to work the

farms. In the criminal justice system, the ability to ascertain innocence through DNA testing has

saved the lives of people on death row.

At the same time that technology is expanding the boundaries of our social circles,

various media are also changing how we perceive and interact with each other. We do not only

use Facebook to keep in touch with friends; we also use it to “like” certain TV shows, products,

or celebrities. Even television is no longer a one-way medium but an interactive one. We are

encouraged to tweet, text, or call in to vote for contestants in everything from singing

competitions to matchmaking endeavours — bridging the gap between our entertainment and our

own lives.

How does technology change our lives for the better? Or does it? When you tweet a

social cause or cut and paste a status update about cancer awareness on Facebook, are you

promoting social change? Does the immediate and constant flow of information mean we are

more aware and engaged than any society before us? Or are TV reality shows and talent

competitions today’s version of ancient Rome’s “bread and circuses” — distractions and

entertainment to keep the lower classes indifferent to the inequities of our society? Do media and

technology liberate us from gender stereotypes and provide us with a more cosmopolitan

understanding of each other, or have they become another tool in promoting misogyny?  Is

ethnic and gay and lesbian intolerance being promoted through a ceaseless barrage of minority

stereotyping in movies, video games, and websites?

These are some of the questions that interest sociologists. How might we examine these

issues from a sociological perspective? A structural functionalist would probably focus on what

social purposes technology and media serve. For example, the web is both a form of technology

and a form of media, and it links individuals and nations in a communication network that

facilitates both small family discussions and global trade networks. A functionalist would also be

interested in the manifest functions of media and technology, as well as their role in social

dysfunction. Someone applying the critical perspective would probably focus on the systematic

inequality created by differential access to media and technology.

Statement of the problem

This research focuses on the utilization of modern technology and its benefits to students

and teachers.

It seeks to answer the following specific questions:

1. What modern technology do students and teachers have at home?

2. What are the advantages of using modern technology?

3. What are the benefits of modern technology to the students?

4. What are the benefits of modern technology to the teachers?

5. What are the impacts of modern technology to the students and teachers?

6. What is the role of modern technology in education?

Statement of the hypothesis

H 01. There is a significant relationship between the utilization of modern technology and

its benefits to students and teachers.

Significance of the study

The result of this utilization of modern technology and its benefits to students and

Teacher to their teaching and learning’s.

The study is significant to the following:

Student: The student will know the utilization of modern technology and its benefits to students

and teachers.

Secondary teachers: The secondary teachers will know the utilization of modern of

technology and its benefits to students and teacher’s modern technology can help you and to

your life will be easier to solve a problem in studies, research, assignment and project.
4

Researcher: As student research this study will provide background information that the

Utilization of modern technology can help our studies become so easy.

Definition of terms

The following terms are defined to gain more understanding of the study. Modern

technology is simply an advancement of old technology on modern Life is unmeasurable. We

use technology in different ways and sometimes the way we implement various technologies.

Technology on a daily basic to accomplish specific take or interests.

Technical Skills

Students, even at the elementary school level, are able to acquire an impressive level of

skill with a broad range of computer software Although the specific software tools in use will

likely change before these students enter the world of work, the students acquire a basic

understanding of how various classes of computer tools behave and a confidence about being

able to learn to use new tools that will support their learning of new software applications.

Improved Design Skills/Attention to Audience

Experiences in developing the kinds of rich, multimedia products that can be produced

with technology, particularly when the design is done collaboratively so that students experience

their peers' reactions to their presentations, appear to support a greater awareness of audience

needs and perspectives. Multiple media give students choices about how best to convey a given

idea (e.g., through text, video, animation). In part because they have the capability to produce

more professional-looking products and the tools to manipulate the way information is presented,

students in many technology-using classes are reportedly spending more time on design and

audience presentation issues.

5

More Collaboration with Peers

Another effect of technology cited by a great majority of teachers is an increased

inclination on the part of students to work cooperatively and to provide peer tutoring. While

many of the classrooms we observed assigned technology-based projects to small groups of

students, as discussed above, there was also considerable tutoring going on around the use of

technology itself. Collaboration is fostered for obvious reasons when students are assigned to

work in pairs or small groups for work at a limited number of computers.

Change in Student and Teacher Roles

When students are using technology as a tool or a support for communicating with others,

they are in an active role rather than the passive role of recipient of information transmitted by a

teacher, textbook, or broadcast. The student is actively making choices about how to generate,

obtain, manipulate, or display information. Technology use allows many more students to be

actively thinking about information, making choices, and executing skills than is typical in

teacher-led lessons. Moreover, when technology is used as a tool to support students in

performing authentic tasks, the students are in the position of defining their goals, making design

decisions, and evaluating their progress.

Behaviorism

Many psychologists used these results to develop theories of human learning, but modern

educators generally see behaviorism as one aspect of a holistic synthesis. Teaching in

behaviorism has been linked to training, emphasizing the animal learning experiments.

Scope and Delimitation

The study focuses in the utilization of modern technology and its benefits to students

and teachers in Saint Anthony Academy. This will be conducted just within the campus of Saint
