Chapter 1

Introduction

Background of the Study

At present times, we can see that technology has grown and expanded over time

and has been improving the lives of students and workers by making communication

easier and more efficient.

Definition of Technology in modern times, the term technology is sometimes used

to describe relatively recently invented devices, such as computers, cellular phones, and

cars. Historically, however, technology has been defined much more broadly and

includes more primitive machines, devices, and tools, such as hunting spears, the wheel,

and the printing press. Technology is the application of systematic knowledge toward the

development of a device, machine, or method of making or doing things.

We have the technology available to us to enable the management of our daily

lives and the sharing of valuable information with our friends, families and others. Why

technology is important in our daily life. It is an essential tool that we cannot avoid, it

plays an important part in the majority of our lives Technology essentially harnesses the

tools, technologies and strategies used to help us solve problems and simply make our

lives better and easier to live in some way. It is the ability to use, understand, create and

manage digital technologies. In schools across the nation, teachers are implementing

technology literacy in their classrooms to help students become digitally literate. There

are several ways teachers can integrate technology literacy into their lessons; thankfully,

many online resources can help them.

Technology increases students' ability to communicate, exemplify thoughts,

beliefs, and stories. However, students can use blogs or discussion boards to express

themselves about a topic. Students are able to research, and use social media to convey

knowledge and converse daily. It definitely motivates students and encourages them to

work hard! The information becomes alive because students have access to ongoing

visual images with the incorporation of text. Technology provides a quicker approach to

obtaining immediate feedback for areas of concern and it supports the educational

development of students.

As beneficial as using technology in the classroom can be, it’s still important to

remember the overall goals: to help students learn, succeed and prepare for life with

confidence. With that in mind, teachers and administrators should carefully evaluate each

new technology to determine whether it will indeed support intended learning outcomes

and enable students to master the lesson plan. Furthermore, educators must collaborate

with IT staff to thoroughly vet the privacy and safety standards of any new technology

before it’s brought into the classroom.

As the education system and workforce evolve to become more technology

inclusive, it is important for students to keep up with modern digital trends while still

obtaining a deep understanding of course content. Implementing technology into the

curriculum provides instructors with an invaluable opportunity to enhance student

engagement and academic success. Students are able to collaborate with peers using

digital platforms, explore creativity through technological features, engage in higher-

order thinking processes, participate in inquiry-based learning, synthesize information

from multiple sources and establish a sense of online social presence. While
implementing technology into the curriculum shifts the learning environment to being

more student-centered, instructors play an integral role in guiding understanding, offering

assistance and taking the necessary steps to ensure that students are present and reaching

their learning goals.

The researcher study aims to provide and enhance the knowledge of students

about the possible effects of technology for daily use in the classroom. This research

study is intended also for educational purposes and is completely unbiased and objective.
Statement of the Problem

Generally, the research aims to find out the perception of students from Grade 10-

Uranium of Asian development Foundation College BLISS Sagkahan, Tacloban City

regarding on the effects of technology for daily use in the classroom.

1. What is the purpose of technology?

2. Is technology beneficial to your daily use in the classroom?

3. Does technology helps you on daily use in the classroom?

4. Does technology affect your performance inside the classroom?

5. Does technology helps you with your assignments and school works?
Significance of the Study

The result of this study benefits to the students, to the teachers, to the future

researchers, and to people of the society as well. This research is made with the aim to

provide more information and knowledge about the effects of technology for daily use in

classroom. Furthermore, the study could be importance to the following:

To the students. You may think technology is just a distraction, but it can help

many students to encourage active participation in their classroom. Using technology in

the classroom would help the students to prepare for digital future by teaching them skills

like power point.

To the teachers. Technology can help teachers to have better relationship with

their students and their colleagues. The teachers can use technology to find content that

will engage students. Integrating technology into subject matter technology will

undoubtedly continue to evolve and it’s important to adjust your classroom style to align

its advancement.

To the people of this society. Technology has a significant positive impact on the

educational system in the recent years. With the proliferation of the internet and the

widespread adoption of devices such laptops, tablets, and cell phones , students and

teachers now have access to a wealth of information of resources that were previously

unavailable. The different uses of technology, such as audio-visual presentations, virtual

classrooms, wide –screen projectors, and digital planners help teachers to improve their

delivery of instructions. This consequently enhanced the understanding and

comprehension level of the students.

To the researcher as well. Research shows that adding new technology to the

classroom can improve student achievement, Desktop computers, tablets, cell phones and

interactive whiteboards keep students active and engaged in learning. However, it isn’t

enough to just implement an electronic device. Access to information and resources.

Technology provides students with instant access to a vast amount of information and

resources. The internet and digital tools allow students explore various subject, conduct

research, and access educational materials that may not be available in traditional

textbooks.
Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to determine the effects of technology for daily use in the

classroom to the students of Asian Development Foundation College BLISS, Sagkahan,

Tacloban City, upon testing the significance between two constructs among students

which are the technology and their own academic performance. The respondents will

only benefit to the students of Asian Development Foundation College.

The conceptual framework illustrates effects of technology, specifically its

positive and negative effects for using daily use of the students inside of the classroom. In

short, technology is consistently changing the education system for good while it is not

all replacing the traditional classroom methods of learning, it is blending with them to

prepare students for situations in technology paced world. Furthermore, the positive

effects of technology are, enhance engagement, access to information, and multimedia

learning. Nevertheless, the negative effects of technology are distractions, loss of

According to Wilson et-al, when researching the effects of technology in the

classroom, it’s crucial to choose a theoretical framework that aligns with your research

objectives and questions. Additionally, interdisciplinary approaches often provide a more

comprehensive understanding of the complex interactions between technology, teaching,

and learning in educational settings. This theory emphasizes the role of intrinsic

motivation in learning. When technology is integrated in a way that supports autonomy,

competence, and relatedness, it can enhance students’ motivation and engagement.

Chapter 2

Review of Related Literature

After decades of studying the impact of technology on schools, the education

technology field is calling for “research that makes a difference” (Roblyer, 2005).

Recognizing the need for “a more organized and persuasive body of evidence on

technology’s benefits to classroom practice” (Roblyer, 2005, p.192), the scholars behind

the movement are pushing the field to design and implement research that will address

technology’s pedagogical contributions while at the same time meet the standards of

evidence-based research.

While technology has become increasingly more popular in classrooms, there is a

concern that students are relying too heavily on technology. While technology can be a

great tool, are students prepared to problem solve technology related issues? With the use

of technology, some teachers are adopting the flipped classroom approach. This allows

students to study the material at home and come to school to engage in more discussions,

exercises, and activities.

While in this setting, students are learning more on their own, they are missing

out on some of that lecture time that can spark deep conversation on problems. This

article looks at the different benefits and concerns of a flipped classroom. Fisher, et al.

(2014) This helps to “move learners from being the consumers of information to being

producers of it” (p. 11).

The effects of using technology for daily use in the classroom have been widely

studied in the literature. Overall, the research suggests both positive and negative
impacts. On the positive side, technology integration in the classroom has been found to

enhance student engagement and motivation. Interactive learning tools, such as

educational apps and online platforms, can make learning more enjoyable and interactive

for students. Additionally, technology can provide access to a vast amount of

information, allowing students to explore and learn at their own pace.

Furthermore, technology can facilitate personalized learning experiences.

Adaptive learning systems can tailor instruction to individual student needs, providing

targeted support and challenging tasks. This individualized approach has shown to

improve student achievement and academic outcomes.

However, it is important to acknowledge the potential drawbacks of technology

use in the classroom. One concern is the potential for increased screen time, which may

lead to sedentary behavior and health issues. Additionally, the reliance on technology can

sometimes hinder the development of essential skills, such as critical thinking and

problem-solving, if not used appropriate.

In conclusion, the literature suggests that technology can have both positive and

negative effects when used for daily use in the classroom. It is crucial for educators to

carefully consider the purpose, implementation, and potential consequences of

technology integration to maximize its benefits and minimize any potential drawbacks.

There is much in the literature regarding the use of technology in education.

According to Dede (2009), Banister (2010), Peled and Schocken (2014), my topic can be

characterized as technology in education is an effective tool for motivating student

engagement, increasing academic success, and providing new environments for students
to learn. Thus, the more technology that is incorporated in a students’ earlier grades, the

more inclined they will be to prefer that type of instruction in their later years. It is an

important topic with respect to education because the wave of new technology is

increasing at rate never before seen in the field of education. These articles track the

study of technology use in the field, and how they are beneficial for my study of

technology in education. All of the articles support the idea of the use of technology in

education, and each represent a different aspect in which technology can improve a

child’s education.

Numerous studies have examined the use of technology in education more

closely. For example, author Dede (2009) studied that immersion in a digital

environment can enhance education in at least three ways: by allowing multiple

perspectives, situated learning, and transfer. With more integration of technology, the

effect it has on fine motor skills is questionable. Some research has dug into this topic,

but it is still fairly undiscovered. Purcell, et al. (2013) provide a comprehensive report

about social media’s impact on writing. Students and teachers talk about what they

consider writing to be. Teachers also discuss how social media has been helpful and

harmful to classroom writing. Teachers “encourage their students to do at least some

writing by hand...because they feel students do more active thinking, synthesizing, and

editing when writing by hand, and writing by hand discourages any temptation to copy

and paste others’ work” (p. 6). Due to social media, students are able to write

collaboratively, share their work with more people, and be more creative in their writing.

Sulzenbruck, et al. (2011) indicate “there are indeed specific differences in basic fine

motor skills depending on the amount of time spent typing and handwriting texts” (p.
250). Their study does not only focus on handwriting but fine motor skills in general.

Computer use also has in impact on major behavioral requirements.

According to Roberts, Foehr & Rideout, (2005) first and foremost, it is important

to understand how we arrived at this topic and why it is significant. The truth of the

matter is the youth of this culture are inundated with technology in almost all capacities

of their lives. A study conducted by Roberts, Foehr and Rideout in 2005 suggested that

the average youth spends almost 6 ½ hours a day using media, which includes most

defined technologies. According to Lenhart, Madden, Hitlin, (2005) this fact alone

remains alarming enough without even accounting for the amount of media and

technology that children are experiencing in the school environment. This being said, one

question that emerges is: to what degree can we justify promoting more media and

technology use within the classroom if our youth are already so overly exposed?

Recognizing the amounts of technology that any given individual uses on a daily basis

can be subjectively difficult to determine; however, another 2005 study found that 87%

of teens aged 12-17 used the Internet, which demonstrates how significant new

technologies have become with our youth generation and how this generation is defined

by the “technological environment” within which they live.

Technology is at the center of our lives in most environments, and the classroom

is no exception. Student in today's classrooms have grown up in a world surrounded by

technology. They do not know what it is like to experience life without cell phones,

computers, televisions and other common tech devices.

Despite this familiarity with technology, educational environments may be slow

to integrate technology into the classroom. Many schools still use analog tools, such as
books, notebooks, whiteboards and posters in instructional design. This could be

attributed to lack of funding. However, some school districts have invested in

instructional technology for the classroom by securing grant funding or donations from

community and business partners. This includes smart boards to replace outdated

projectors as well as personal digital devices such as iPads or Chrome books. Technology

has the potential to make aspects of education easier and more equitable in many ways.

Let's find out how teachers and students can benefit from additional technology in the

classroom.
