ABSTRACT
In India, reinforced concrete (RC) structures are under a persistent threat from seismic
activity, which has the potential to cause substantial structural damage and endanger the
safety of the building's occupants. To address this concern, seismic-resistant design practices
are essential, considering various factors such as seismic zones, site conditions, building
importance, and response reduction factors. This study presents a comparative analysis of the
performance of an RC building designed as an Ordinary Moment Resisting Frame (OMRF)
versus a Special Moment Resisting Frame (SMRF) using non-linear analysis techniques.
Non-linear analysis is conducted using software such as ETABS, according to Indian Code
provisions, for both OMRF and SMRF designs. The case study is in Zone II, characterized by
moderate seismic activity. This paper aims to determine the optimal design approach,
considering safety, stability, serviceability, and economic factors while adhering to Indian
Code provisions. This study highlights the importance of considering seismic-resistant design
practices in building design, especially in moderate seismic zones such as Zone II. The
analysis encompasses a comprehensive range of seismic parameters, including Story drift,
Base Shear, Time history response, Acceleration, Overturning Moment, Deformation, and
Story Forces. Additionally, the study extends to the detailed design of a typical structural
element, comparing the required reinforcement and detailing according to OMRF and SMRF
provisions outlined in the Indian Code. The results of this study provide insights into the
structural behavior of OMRF and SMRF systems under seismic loading. By evaluating the
differences in reinforcement weight required per meter, the research aims to identify which
approach is more effective in enhancing seismic resilience.
