Listening Strategies Based on Purpose
1

What’s In
How well do you listen? Listening in any language requires focus and
attention. It is a skill that some people need to work harder than others. People
who have difficulty concentrating are typically poor listeners. Listening in a
second language requires even greater focus. To become an effective listener in
English, you need to develop strong listening skills. Listening not only helps you
understand what people are saying to you. It also helps you to speak clearly to
other people. In addition to this, it helps you learn how to pronounce words
properly, how to use intonation, and where to place stress in words and
sentences. It makes your speech easier for other people listening to you to
understand. Indeed, listening is one of the most important skills that you should
have for learning new information.

You've Got a Friend in Me

by Randy Newman

You've got a friend in me You've got a friend in me

You've got a friend in me You've got a friend in me
When the road looks rough ahead You got troubles, and I got 'em too
And you're miles and miles There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you
from your nice warm bed We stick together and we see it through
You just remember what 'Cause you've got a friend in me
your old pal said You've got a friend in me
Boy, you've got a friend in me Some other folks might be a little bit
Yeah, you've got a friend in me smarter than I am, bigger and stronger too

5. Describe your friend.

What Is It

Listening is receiving language through the ears. Listening involves

identifying the sounds of speech and processing them into words and sentences.

When we listen, we use our ears to receive individual sounds (letters, stress,
rhythm, and pauses) and we use our brain to convert these into messages that
mean something to us.

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
Listening is the one skill that you use the most in everyday life.
Comprehension is the basis for your speaking, writing, and reading skills. It is
important to listen actively, to train your listening skills. It means you need to
pay attention attentively to what you are listening to. Therefore, it is necessary to
use effective listening strategies.

There are three basic types of listening strategies:

1. Listening for gist – to understand the main idea of the text.
2. Listening for specific information – to find out specific details, for
example key words.
3. Listening for detailed understanding – to understand all the
information the text provides.

Before you listen to a text, you should be aware of these different types.

How to Improve Your Listening Skills:

• Before you listen

1. Think about the topic of the text you are going to listen to. What do you
already know about it? What could possibly be the content of the text?
Which words come to mind that you already know? Which words would you
want to look up?
2. If you have to do a task on the listening text, check whether you have
understood the task correctly.
3. Think of what type of text you are going to listen to. What do you know
about this type of text?
4. Relax and make yourself ready to pay attention to the listening text.

• While you are listening

1. It is not necessary to understand every single word. Try to ignore those
words that you think are less important anyway.
2. If there are words or issues that you don’t understand, use your general
knowledge as well as the context to find out the meaning.
3. Focus on keywords and facts.
4. Take notes to support your memory.
5. Intonation and stress of the speakers can help you to understand what
you hear.

• After listening
1. Think about the text again. Have you understood the main points?

City of Good Character

4
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
2. Remember the speculations you made before you listened. Did they come
true?
3. Review your notes.
4. Check whether you have completed your task correctly.

THE SCIENCE OF COLOR

The human perception of color is caused by the way our eyes 1_____________
to light. While humans can see many different colors, light that is visible to
humans only makes up a small amount of the light in the 2___________. This is
because of the limits of the photoreceptors in our eyes. Human eyes contain types
of photoreceptors known as cones, which are responsible for detecting colored
light. Because light is made up of 3_______, each type of light has a different
wavelength. Cones can pick up on these wavelengths, which is how we
differentiate between colors. Humans have three types of cones in our eyes –
known as red, green, and blue cones. We can see any color of light with a
wavelength within the range of those cones.

However, light outside of the visible range – such as infrared and ultraviolet
light – can’t be seen by the human eye. Though this light is invisible to us, it isn’t
invisible to every 4_____________.Different animals have different amounts of cones
in their eyes. Dogs, for example, only have two types of cones and therefore can’t
see as many colors as we can. An animal known as the mantis shrimp, however,
has sixteen types of cones. That means that its range of visible light is much wider
than ours, and it can see colors we can’t even 5______________.

THE SCIENCE OF HAND WASHING

Washing hands is a common practice for maintaining good hygiene and

preventing disease. However, studies show that many people still don’t wash their
hands properly. Rinsing with water is not enough to eliminate viruses.
This is because viruses can adhere to skin, and the friction caused by
rubbing hands together is not always enough to remove them. The molecules in
hand soap are able to break the virus away from the skin. These molecules can
then kill the virus by breaking the bonds that hold it together. It is recommended
that people wash their hands for over twenty seconds with soap and water. Drying
hands is also important, because wet hands can transfer bacteria to surfaces
more easily than dry hands. Some people use hand sanitizer instead of soap to
prevent disease. While hand sanitizer can be effective against bacteria and
viruses, medical professionals agree that it is not quite as effective as soap and
water.

3. Which of the following is the most effective in eliminating viruses?

A. Apply Alcohol. C. Wash with Soap and water.
B. Use Hand sanitizer. D. Wash with water.

4. Which of the following sentences is NOT a precaution to protect oneself from

COVID-19?

B. Wash hands with lukewarm water.
C. Wash hands with soap and water
D. Wear face mask.
