Sidewalk Artists
By Lissa Rovetch ⋆ Art by Amy Wummer

“What’s in that bucket?” asked Indi.

“Sidewalk chalk,” said Tex.
“Ooh!” said Indi. “Let’s go draw!”
“I see rain clouds,” said Dad. “You might want
to start before the sidewalk gets wet.”

The twins drew and drew.
“I’m making a magical flower,” said Tex.
“I’m drawing a giraffe with a super-long neck so it can
smell your flower,” said Indi.
“What bright colors!” said Mom. “But it’s time for lunch,
so let’s take a break and come back later.”

“Mmm,” said Indi. “This soup is yummy.”
As they ate, the sky turned dark, and rain started
pouring down.
“Oh, no,” said Tex. “Our drawings are going to
wash away.”

8 HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE ⋆ MARCH 2020

The twins ran outside after lunch.
“Aww,” said Tex. “My flower is gone.”
“So is my giraffe,” said Indi. “But look, there’s
a rainbow!”
“Hmm,” said Tex. “Maybe we can turn our drawings
into a rainbow!”
“That’s a great idea,” said Indi. “Two rainbows are
better than one!”

Counting
Matryoshki
By Amanda Hayward ⋆ Art by Lesley Breen Withrow

One happy wooden doll looking at me—

open her up and what do I see?
One becomes two, and two becomes three.
Three becomes four little dolls for me.
Open up the fourth doll and what do I see?
The cutest little, smallest little doll baby.

How many matryoshki

do you see?
What do you see
that is small and what do
you see that is large?

Matryoshki (mah-tree-OH-shkee) are Russian nesting dolls

of different sizes. They are built to fit one inside the other.

My Favorite
Bedtime
Story
By Eileen Spinelli Art by Joel and Ashley Selby

At bedtime, I get all cozy

under the covers, and Mama
dims the light. In a sleepy-
soft voice, she begins my
favorite story.
“Once upon a time, on a
March night, cold and deep
with snow,” she says, “you
were born. I told your Papa:
‘It’s time!’ Papa ran out in his
socks and house slippers to
warm up the car.”
When she says that, Mama
and I always giggle.

26 HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE MARCH 2020

Mama continues. “I grabbed the red suitcase I had packed
weeks before. Papa sang to me as we drove. I rested my head on
his shoulder and took deep breaths. Streetlamps shimmered like
tiny moons in the snowy dark. It was a beautiful night.”

HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE MARCH 2020 27

Because I know the story by heart, I pipe up, “At the
hospital, a nurse helped you into a blue gown. The doctor
smiled at Papa and told him everything would be fine.”
Mama strokes my hair. “Yes—and Papa held my hand. And
the wind whirled puffs of snow at the window. The nurse
turned my pillow, and it was cool like a cloud of snow.”
28 HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE ⋆ MARCH 2020
“And then you came, my sweet girl. Papa held you
and called you his little snow angel.”

My eyes get
droopy. I yawn. I
snuggle deeper
under my blanket.
I whisper, “And we
all lived happily
ever after.”
