My Big
Sister
My sister taught me how to draw.
And how to tie my shoe.
She taught me how to play Go Fish.
She taught me hopscotch too.
I thank her, but she shrugs and says:
“That’s what big sisters do.”

Imagination Break
“Tex, we’re supposed to be sweeping the patio,” said Indi.
“How come you’re just lying on the ground under the tree?”
“I’m not lying on the ground,” said Tex. “I’m swimming.
And I’m not under the tree. I’m under the sea!”
“Can I come swim with you?” asked Indi.
“Dive in!” said Tex. “But, whoa—look out! That dolphin’s
jumping right over your head!”
“Whoa,” Indi giggled. “Look, there’s a giant sea turtle.
Let’s follow him into the seaweed.”
“He’s joining an octopus for a picnic,” said Tex, laughing.

“Hey,” said Dad, “I thought this was cleaning up time, not
lying down time.”
“We’re not lying down,” said Tex. “We’re under the sea
with a dolphin and a sea turtle and an octopus.”
“Want to come swim with us?” said Indi. “The water’s
nice and warm.”

“Well, I can’t say no to swimming with an
octopus,” said Dad.
“Plus,” said Tex, “when we’re done with our
adventure, the octopus can use all eight of her
arms to help us clean up the yard!”

TOO MUCH NOIS E B y Je ssica Kautz Art by Lauren G
alle gos

Mateo loves soccer and cats and blocks and cookies.

But there is one thing he doesn’t love—too much noise!
And too much noise is everywhere.
It comes from the blender when Mom makes smoothies.
It comes from the vacuum when Dad cleans the floor.
It comes from the blow-dryer when Nana does her hair.
It makes him want to stomp and scream and make too
much noise himself. No good!
HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE APRIL 2021 13
“Think of the noises
as friends,” says Mom.
“Hug yourself tight,”
says Dad.
“No,” says Mateo.
“That doesn’t help.”

One day, Mateo is

playing dress-up.
He is a pilot with
sunglasses and a
bomber jacket.
“I need
headphones too!”
He finds the ones
Nana wears.

HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE APRIL 2021

When Mateo puts them on, they feel like a big, quiet
hug on his ears. All the too much noise goes away.
“Nana, can we share these?” Mateo asks.
“Of course,” says Nana.
Mateo loves soccer and cats and blocks and cookies.
And now he loves his special headphones too.
