Playing
Catch
By Lissa Rovetch Art by Deborah Melmon

Tex was so excited to play catch in

his best friend’s backyard.
“Hi,” said Niko. “How come your
baseball mitt is so big?”
“I couldn’t find mine,” said Tex. “I’m
borrowing my dad’s.”
“It’s kind of gigantic,” said Niko. “Are
you sure you can catch with it?”
“Sure, I’m sure!” said Tex.

6 HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE JUNE 2021

But when Tex tried to catch the ball, the mitt slipped
right off his hand, and the ball bounced right into
Rosie’s mouth.
“Here, Rosie!” called out Niko. “Give us back our ball!”

HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE JUNE 2021 7

But Rosie didn’t feel like giving back the ball. Rosie felt
like playing chase! She ran in speedy loops all over the
yard, and the boys ran in speedy loops trying to catch her.

8 HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE JUNE 2021

At last, when they finally caught up to Rosie, the boys
laughed and laughed and laughed.
“We started out playing catch the ball,” giggled Tex, “and
we ended up playing catch the dog!”

with Grandpa

20
When I go fishing with Grandpa, we put my life jacket
on tight before we leave the dock.
We slowly motor out of the boat slip to the wide-open bay.
We pass seagulls perched on floating buoys, and I wave
as we go by.
When we hit the open water, Grandpa cranks up the
speed. Then we really start to fly!

HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE JUNE 2021 21

We motor to the best
fishing spots that only
Grandpa knows.
Grandpa baits our hooks
with worms and rigs a
sinker on the line.

We drop our lines into the water until they hit the
bottom. We wait for the fish to bite.
When we see the bobber bounce, Grandpa shouts,
“You got a bite!”

22 HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE ⋆ JUNE 2021

I reel the fish in as fast as I can, and Grandpa scoops
it up with a net.
Grandpa unhooks the fish, and I blow it a kiss. We
return it to the water. When it swims away, we say, “We
will catch you again next time!”

going to try to eat an arco iris!”
Miguel didn’t like new foods, but he did like rainbows. He
