Tex and Indi

Run for Fun By Lissa Rovetch ⋆ Art by Amy Wummer

Tex and Indi and their family were walking through

Golden Gate Park.
“Whoa,” said Indi. “Look at all those people running.”
“A bunch of them are wearing costumes,” said Tex.
“What are they doing?” asked their sister, Arizona.
“They’re running the Bay to Breakers race,” said Dad.
“It happens every year in San Francisco.”

6 HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE ⋆ MAY 2020

“I can run fast,” said Indi. “Count how many seconds it
takes me to get to that tree.”
“One Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi,”
Tex counted as Indi ran. “Twenty-five seconds!”
“Did you see that squirrel running next to me?” asked
Indi. “He was racing too!”

Next, Tex ran while Indi counted.
“Twenty-five seconds,” said Indi. “It’s a tie!”
“A triple tie,” said Tex. “That little squirrel was
running with me too.”

8 HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE ⋆ MAY 2020

“Maybe next year we can all run the race,” said Mom.
“Awesome!” said Arizona. “But what should we dress up as?”
Just then, the squirrel ran around in circles in front of them.
“Squirrels!” said the whole family, laughing.

Riley Likes
Rocks
By Barbara L. Scanlan ⋆ Art by Lila Kalogeri

Riley is a rock hound. She really likes rocks.

She digs up her treasures to put into a box.

Her favorite ones are smooth and shiny.

Some are big. Others are tiny.

The colorful rocks, red, green, and blue,

she puts on display with a dab of glue.

Of the many things on her “grown-up” list,

one of them is a geologist!

How many R’s do you see?

What colors are the rocks?
What else do you see?

The Dollar By Ana Galán ⋆ Art by Roberta Angaramo ⋆ Spanish pronunciation by Linda Elman, Ph.D.

Juan was so excited. His mom had given him one dollar.
He showed the bill to Bebo.
“One dollar!” said Bebo. “What are you going to do with it?”
“No sé,” said Juan.

Dilemma
They started walking down the street and saw an ice-cream truck.
“You could buy an ice cream,” said Bebo.
“¿Cuánto cuestan dos helados?” Juan asked the vendor.
“Four dollars,” said the vendor.
Juan didn’t have four dollars, so he and Bebo kept walking.

They went into a toy store.
“You could buy a ball and we could play,”

Juan sighed.

The friends went back to Juan’s apartment.

“Good idea,” said Bebo. “Now let’s go play.”
