1(a)(i). Physics comes from the Greek word 'Physis', which means a

natural science that studies nature. As an upcoming Physist, define the

term "Physics". (1mark)

(ii) Explain any four branches of Physics that you know in your

community basing on the pictures 1, 2, 3 and 4 as shown below. (8

marks)

(b). Why do you think it is important for people in your community to

study Physics? (4 marks)

(c). State the different careers that require the knowledge of Physics in

Uganda today.

2. (a). Physics experiments are carried out in the laboratory for the safety

of the apparatus/ laboratory equipment, as well as the students'

convenience while carrying out experiments as shown below.

(i) As a Physicist, define the term laboratory. (1 mark)

(i) state any 8 apparatus found in the Physics laboratory. (4 marks)

(b). Describe the rules and regulations one must observe while in a

Physics laboratory. (5

marks)

3. Physics is concerned with measurement of physical quantities and

classifying them according to their nature. A physical quantity is any

quantity that accurately be measured.

(a). What is meant by the following physical quantities:

(i) Fundamental quantity, state any three examples. (4 marks)

(ii) Derived quantity, state any four examples. (3 marks)

(b). Name the instrument you would use to accurately measure the

following, giving a reason in each case;

(i) thickness of paper. (11/2

marks)

(ii) length of a book . (11/2 marks)

c. (i). The mass of a phone is found to be 145.7 g. What is the mass in

kilograms? (2 marks)

(ii) A storied building has a ground floor and three other floors. To

move from one floor to another, you climb 12 steps each of length 20

cm. What is the height of the storied building in metres? (3 marks)
