Concept Notes

Human body is not the only definition of a human person. There exists an intangible element
which enables us to exercise thought, possess awareness, interiority, and the capacity to reach out to
the outside world ang other persons. This intangible element is the spirit. (Abella, 2016) With this,
philosophers consider a human person as the union of the body and the spirit. The human person is
an embodied spirit.

▪ body and spirit go hand in hand in making us who we are

▪ whatever affects the body, also affects the spirit
▪ embodiment of the spirit allows a human person to experience the physical and the spiritual
world
▪ our experience is also a product of embodiment
▪ the human body stands as the mediator between the material and the spiritual world
