A. Background Information for Learners

The notion that the human person is an embodied spirit is one of the dominant
themes in the course of Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person. So when we
claim that the human person is an embodied spirit, we explicitly mean that the human person
in the point of unification that is, between the body and soul between the material and
spiritual forces. It is necessary to consider the specificity of the human being as an
embodied spirit because apart from the fact that it helps us to recognize our capacity and
weaknesses, it also introduces us to comprehensive and deeper understanding of ourselves
as a special being united by body and soul.

This Activity Sheet gives emphasis on how the human body imposes limits and
possibilities for transcendence.

DISCUSSION: The Human Body’s Limits and Possibilities for

Transcendence

What is a Person?

A person is a being characterized by consciousness, rationality, and a

moral sense and traditionally thought of as a consisting of both a body and a
mind or soul. In their quest, philosophers aim to characterize the human being
(person) by describing it through the following character traits:

1. Self-Awareness - refers to the person clear perception of one self which

includes her thoughts, emotions, identity and actions. goals, dreams, and
plans. It is also driven by rationality or human thought. It is an awareness not
just of his or her surroundings but also of his/her existence which deals with
the notion of self- a person who perceives and experiences interiority, which
is the quality of being focused on one’s inner life and identity. Having an inner
world allows a person to create goals, dreams, and plans.

2. Self-determination - is the capability of persons to make choices and

decisions based on their preferences, monitor, and regulate their actions, and
be goal-oriented and self-directed. As human persons, we act, and we are
aware of our actions.

3. Externality - is the capability to reach out and interact with others and the
world. Our interaction with others and the world is externality. We believe that

no man is an island and that we need to reach out to others to give meaning
to our existence as persons. We grow and develop not only through our
thoughts and action, but also through the influence of other people whom we
meet and interact with in our lives.

4. Dignity - is the innate right to be valued and to be respected. As human

persons, we have an innate worth or value. Each person is worth the same as
another person in the sense that every person is priceless, unique,
unrepeatable, and irreplaceable. We do not equate our value to any material
thing that we have. Outside forces or characteristics such as beauty,
intelligence, or skills do not define our dignity. A person’s incapability and
criminal act will not make him or her less of a person he/she is expected to
be. Since a person has dignity, he/she deserves to be treated fairly. The
recognition of the dignity of the human person is the basis for the recognition
of human rights.

Limitations of the Human Person

Human persons are naturally deficient beings. This means that we are not
prepared with the best physical aspects among all the beings. There are things
that we are not capable of, for example:
 We cannot fly
 We cannot breathe under water
 We cannot move things through our mind
 We cannot see microscopic object with our naked eyes

Limitations can Lead to Possibilities

Man has also many possibilities. Man is not just a material being but also a
rational and spiritual being. Through the intellect and will, man has many
possibilities in life. He has the capacity to choose to do or not to do. It is indeed
true that he is limited by his body but he can also go beyond materiality. Man
can be happy here on Earth by pursuing material wealth but man can also go
beyond material happiness. Moreover, man is also a transcendent being which
means that his existence is beyond the physical level. Transcendence is a state
of being above and beyond the limits of material experiences. (Arambala, et. al,
2017)
