Malnutrition in Nepal

Malnutrition is defined as an imbalance of nutrients. Since Nepal is a developing country

butafulydevlopountrycOur c ount r y l a c ks a wa r e ne s s a nd e c onomy. I n 2019, The

malnutrition rate in Nepal was 43 % for children under 5 years old. For the first 2 decades,

Malnutrition progress has been slowed down in Nepal

The situation of malnutrition in Nepal is still dangerous. It is a major threat to babies,

teenagers, and mothers.

In low-income countries like Nepal, the case of undernutrition remains high. In Nepal, the

districts Humla, Baitadi, Surkhet, Doti, Achham, Okhaldhunga, and Terhathum have high

percentages of child malnutrition rate.

The main causes of malnutrition in Nepal

There are many reasons why malnutrition still kills in Nepal, but I will only list a few of

them.

Poor Health
Diseases like diarrhea take away all the children's left nutrients, making them very weak

and vulnerable to even more diseases.

Poor Sanitation

The Big causes of malnutrition in Nepal are poor hygienic practices and poor access to

clean drinking water and sanitation facilities.

Poor awareness

In Nepal, there is a lack of awareness, so mothers often will not know what to do if their

child has malnutrition.

Types of Malnutrition

There are 2 types of malnutrition in Nepal and all over the world there are:

1) Overnutrition

2)Undernutrition

Mainly in Nepal, there haven’t been many cases of overnutrition but severe cases of

undernutrition, Though Nepal has improved their score in global hunger there are many

places in Nepal where the child is not provided with sufficient food.

Some diseases caused by undernutrition

1)kwashiorkor

2)marasmus

Kwashiorkor

Kwashiorkor is a disease marked by severe protein malnutrition. It usually affects infants

and children, most often around the age of weaning through age 5. The disease is seen in

very severe cases of starvation and poverty-stricken regions worldwide.

Marasmus

What is Marasmus? Marasmus is a severe form of malnutrition — specifically, protein-

energy undernutrition. It results from an overall lack of calories. Marasmus is a deficiency

of all macronutrients: carbohydrates, fats, and protein. If you have marasmus, you lack the

fuel necessary to maintain normal body functions

Some diseases caused by overnutrition

1) Obesity

2) Diabetes
Obesity

Overview. Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat

accumulation that presents a health risk. A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is

considered overweight, and over 30 is obese.

Diabetes

With diabetes, your body doesn't make enough insulin or can't use it as well as it

should. When there isn't enough insulin or cells stop responding to insulin, too

much blood sugar stays in your bloodstream. Over time, that can cause serious

health problems like heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.
