1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 GENERAL
The MAD series of compressed air dryers are designed to remove moisture from
compressed air by utilising state of the art technology to obtain dew points of -40 (-40°F)
PDP, and by appropriate de-rating -70°C (-100°F) PDP (Low dew point option).
MAD dryers have been designed to require minimal maintenance and can be installed
virtually anywhere. The MAD dryer consists of upper and lower head assemblies joined
together with aluminum extrusion containing twin internal chambers. The upper head
assembly contains inlet and outlet manifolds. The lower head assembly contains two
exhaust valves and a passive shuttle ball valve. During operation one chamber is on-
line (drying) while the other is regenerating, using the Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA)
process.
This adsorption dryer is designed for neutral media free of aggressive water, oil and
solid elements. Xebec Adsorption Inc. (Xebec) accepts no liability for corrosion damage
or malfunctions caused by aggressive media.
Applications other than those mentioned in this manual must be agreed to by Xebec
and confirmed in writing.
This dryer additionally requires the installation of Xebec pre- and after-filters.
Xebec reserves the right to make changes at any time as may be necessary for
increasing efficiency or safety, or in the interests of further development.

1.2 PRESSURE SWING ADSORPTION (PSA)

A small percentage of dried air is taken from the dryer outlet flow and is used to
regenerate the saturated chamber by expanding the dried air from line pressure to
atmospheric pressure. During this process, the moisture is physically removed from
the regenerating chamber and vented to atmosphere through the exhaust.

1.3 ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

Care must be taken to ensure that the dryer is not subject to flows (even peaks) in
excess of the dryers rated capacity, e.g. dryers downstream of an air receiver have
increased potential to be overflowed.

The dryer can be installed free standing, secured to the floor via the fastening points
provided in the base or secured to a wall using optional brackets.

1
MAD 2 to MAD 215 Dryer
July 2018

The dryer must be installed vertical and level. Suitable rated pipe and connections
must be used for the installation. All pipe work must be secure and safely positioned.

The purge flow is factory set for 7 bar (100 psig) inlet pressure operation. Should the
minimum pressure requirement be different, the purge flow must be reset by a Xebec
engineer or a Xebec approved agent.

Ensure the dryer is electrically connected to a supply suitable for the unit. See wiring
diagram printed in section 4.3.

Environmental Protection is IP65 (NEMA12) and the Noise Level is <70 dB(A)

1.4 FILTRATION

In order to prevent liquid droplets of condensate and dirt from getting into the desiccant,
a Xebec coalescing pre-filter (with an automatic condensate drain) must be installed
upstream of the adsorption dryer. Otherwise, an oil film on the desiccant will reduce the
drying capacity and will adversely affect dryer performance.

In order to prevent breakdown in downstream instruments caused by material that has

been abraded from the desiccant bed, a Xebec after-filter must be mounted
downstream of the adsorption dryer. Since no condensate accumulates in the after-
filter, no automatic drain is required.

Both filters should be equipped with an incident monitor (i.e., a differential pressure
indicator) to advice of filter element blockage. Elements must be changed annually
regardless of the reading on the indicators.

Filters are shipped loose and installed on site by the client.

5. START UP AND OPERATION

5.1 INITIAL START UP

• Ensure a suitable supply of compressed air between 4.1 bar (60 psig) and 16 bar
(230 psig) pressure is available and check that the dryer cannot be overflowed.

Attention!

• Control air pressure is to be below 145 psig. If the working

pressure is above 145 psig, use a pressure regulator and
set it below 145 psig (pressure regulator is not supplied
with the dryer).

• Inlet temperature must be between 4.4⁰C (40⁰F) to 49⁰C

(120⁰F)

5.1.1 Without by-pass line

• Close inlet and outlet valves (not supplied with the dryer)

• Introduce air to the dryer by opening the inlet valve slightly. Wait for the dryer to
fully pressurize then fully open the valve. Allow dryer to fully pressurise, and then
gradually open the outlet valve.

• Turn on the ON/OFF switch at the bottom of the dryer. The green LED on the
panel will illuminate and the dryer will start cycling in 10 seconds. The mini- PLC
screen shows the operations at that moment. The dryer is now on stream.

5.1.2 Using by-pass line

• With the inlet and outlet valves closed and the by- pass valve open, introduce air
to the dryer by opening the inlet valve slightly, wait for the dryer to fully
pressurize then fully open the valve.

• Allow the dryer to fully pressurise, and then open the outlet valve while
simultaneously closing the by-pass valve.

• Turn on the ON/OFF switch at the bottom of the dryer. The green led on the
panel will illuminate and the dryer will start cycling in 10 seconds. The mini-PLC
screen shows the operations at that moment. The dryer is now on stream.

5.2 NORMAL OPERATION

Following the start-up procedure the operation of the dryer is fully automatic and
requires no further attention until shut down. The green ‘power on’ LED and the green
‘correct operation’ LED should be illuminated continuously.

The dryer contains two desiccant chambers, while one chamber is drying the
compressed air (adsorption), the other chamber is simultaneously undergoing
regeneration (de- sorption). At a predetermined time both exhaust valves close and re-
pressurisation begins.

Every two and a half minutes the chambers are reversed in function. This is the
changeover point. Changeover is characterised by an immediate venting of
compressed air from the chamber entering regeneration.

The dryer can be shut down at any point in its cycle and when restarted will enter an
automatic re-pressurisation stage. After re-pressurisation, the cycle will commence at
the point at which it stopped. If power is switched on, the dryer will enter an automatic
re-pressurisation stage at the point at which it stopped.

5.3 SHUT-DOWN PROCEDURE TO DEPRESSURIZE THE DRYER

• Prior to isolating the electrical supply close the outlet valve while simultaneously
opening the by-pass valve (if fitted).

• Close the inlet valve. The dryer will now be isolated from supply pressure.

• Cycle the dryer for a minimum of 5 minutes to ensure the dryer vents and is
completely depressurized. When the dryer is completely depressurized, isolate
the electrical supply.

• The by-pass valve (if fitted) should only be opened if the dryer is undergoing
maintenance.

5.4 ALARM SIGNAL

It is possible to get an alarm signal and control the dryer by a remote control. In order to
get the alarm and/or remote control the connector under the dryer is to be used. Refer
to the wiring diagram for wiring details.

5.5 REMOTE CONTROL CONNECTIONS

The purpose of this section is to show how to make the connections and necessary
controller adjustment for remote start/stop and alarm signal.

• Locating the connector: Connector for remote control and alarm is located under
the dryer. In order to reach the connector easily the dryer needs to be tilted back.

• Remove the connector by unscrewing the single screw on the connector.

• Reveal the terminals by removing the cover of the connector.

24
MAD 2 to MAD 215 Dryer
July 2018

• On the opposite side of the connector you will see the terminals. Two of these
terminals are short circuited by a wire (see photo below). This allows the dryers
to start as soon as the dryer is turned on, preventing remote control. Remove the
wire to enable remote control.

Terminals PE and 3 are the remote start/stop input terminals. Only 24 VDC can be
supplied to these terminals. Terminals 1 and 2 are remote alarm output terminals. This
connection is a dry contact, which means it is suitable for use with 24V AC/DC or
230VAC.

After making necessary connections for remote start/stop, adjustment is needed to be

made on the controller. Press buttons A and B on the controller simultaneously. Below
screen will appear.

25
MAD 2 to MAD 215 Dryer
July 2018

Digit “1” seen on the left should be changed to “0”. This is the last step to be able to
start or stop the dryer remotely.

IMPORTANT NOTE: After completing all the steps for enabling remote start/stop, the
dryer can only be started by remote start signal.

6. MAINTENANCE

6.1 MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES

• Maintenance operations should be held only when the system is shut down and
fully depressurised

Attention!

• Maintenance operations should only be carried out by

authorized personnel.

• Do not modify or change the control settings

• Use only approved Xebec replacement parts

• Always check connections against leakage

• Ensure all loose parts are removed and secured to the

dryer before operation

6.2 DAILY CHECKS

• Functional and visual checks are to be done daily. Ensure the Green power-on
led is illuminated.

• Check any external damages.

• If the service led (red led) appears, contact your authorized Xebec distributor for
Service.

• Remove the dust and dirt from the dryer. Clean all surfaces which are
contaminated.

6.3 ANNUALY
• The filter element must be changed annually

• Depressurize the dryer following the shut-down procedure

Danger!
Change filter elements only when the housing is fully
depressurized

27
MAD 2 to MAD 215 Dryer
July 2018

• Open the Xebec filter housing either by separating the lower part of the housing
from the upper part or breaking the filter housing flange connection.

• Remove the element by hand

• Install the new element and replace the O-ring/or gasket, making sure that the
element seats perfectly

• Reclose the filter housing.

NOTE: Filter elements cannot be cleaned or reused.

6.4 EVERY 2 YEAR OR 12,000 HOURS OF OPERATION

A full product service is recommended every 2 years or 12.000 hours of operation
(whichever occurs first).

• Valves and silencers are to be checked and replaced if necessary.

• Change the desiccant

Danger!
• Desiccant life is determined by the care with which it is handled, the
quality of filtered inlet air provided and by its time in use. Be careful
to not abrade (i.e., wear down) the desiccant when installing it.
Proper filtering of inlet air, and constant pressure and temperature,
will also extend its life

• The following considerations determine the life expectancy of

desiccant: Care in installation, Quality of input gas (e.g., air),
Constancy of flow and temperature, Whether full-service cycling or
low-demand usage, Time in service.
The following clues will suggest that you examine the desiccant and consider its
replacement:

• Discolouring of desiccant (e.g., oil residue, other contaminants): a brown or

yellow tinge indicates that the adsorbent capacity of the desiccant has been
diminished

• Frequent after-filter replacement due to desiccant dust accumulation

• Performance dew point rises.

Refer to paragraph 3 to determine the desiccant quantity required for your model of
dryer.

28
MAD 2 to MAD 215 Dryer
July 2018

Danger!

• Desiccant may contain pollutants.

• Desiccant is to be disposed of in accordance with National, State
and local regulation.

• After changing the desiccant, perform an initial start-up

3. XEBEC SERVICE
Xebec offers a customer service program to assist in dryer maintenance.
The services provided are for the inspection and maintenance activities that can prevent
costly failures and downtime.
The frequency of visits to the customer facility is normally two times per year (or as
agreed upon with the customer). Following the initial survey of the system(s), a
convenient schedule will be prepared for the duration of the service program
agreement. Revisions to this schedule may be initiated by the client to reflect any
special requirements such as plant shutdown, vacation periods or emergencies.
The Xebec technician is competent to inspect and verify the complete operational status
of the system. For a reasonable fee, the technician can provide in-house training for
plant personnel so they will be able to detect, troubleshoot and correct any system
problem.
Following each service visit, the technician will provide a detailed report indicating all
pertinent data reflecting his inspections and recommendations concerning the system.
In the event spare parts and further service are required, they will be initiated only
following the approval of the customer.
The cost for this service can be determined at an hourly rate or by the day. Additionally,
travel charges apply according to available flight costs and/or set mileage rates.
Subsistence expenses for the technician are at cost plus 15%. All the necessary parts
will be invoiced separately.
This service program agreement also provides spare parts purchase benefits. A 10%
discount is provided for all spare parts purchased for use with the system(s) covered by
the service program agreement. The service program agreement number should be
specified at the time of order to receive this discount. All parts installed by the technician
are covered by a six-month replacement guarantee.
Within the guarantee period, any parts found to be defective will be replaced free of
charge by Xebec under the condition that the system was operated in accordance with
the User Manual and the specifications of the purchase order.
Your service program agreement and all pertinent data and transaction records will be
kept in our service department files for your reference.
