Purpose and use

3 Purpose and use

The purpose of section insulators are to divide the overhead contact line system into individual
switching and feeder sections. These switching and feeder sections are electrically insulated from
one another by the section insulators.
Section insulators form an insulator on the contact wire that can be traversed.
The SICAT 8WL5510-0 section insulator is used in mass transit, where electric traction vehicles
with bow-type pantograph can travel under it at maximum running speeds of up to 80 km/h.
Two sections are only electrically insulated from one another when it is sure that no traction
vehicles can pass the section insulator.
The described section insulators can be used for contact wires with a nominal cross section of
Ri/RiS80-Ri/RiS150 acc. to DIN 43141 or AC80-AC150 acc. to EN 50149:10.2001.
This section insulator cannot be used for contact wires with groove cross sections deviating from
this or with different materials, such as RiM.

The parts with position numbers 1, 1a, 4, 4a, 4b, 4c and 5 are arranged (symmetrically) on both sides of the section
insulator.
The following parts are not included in the scope of delivery of the section insulator:
• setting loops
• parallel groove clamps
• 1000 mm sections of preformed contact wire
• suspension for section insulator
• messenger wire insulator
This section insulator with non-continuous copper slide elements permits a lightweight
construction. In this design, the glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) runners guide the pantograph
after it has passed the contact wire in the region of the contact wire dead-end clamp and the
setting loop.

10 / 22 design_5510_103_76.fm
Design

The contact wire dead-end clamps with clamping jaws that are attached to the tension bodies are
designed so that
• the section insulator is mounted under load, i.e., without relieving the contact wires
• the contact wire is clamped with the clamping jaws (3-hole) with high tensile strength
• the contact wire, mounted with high tensile strength on both sides, is cut on the saw notches
• the height of the setting loops is adjusted to the height of the worn contact wire with the
movable double clamping jaws (1-hole) on the inside (height adjustment for setting loops).
The suspensions for the section insulator are attached to the tension bodies. The suspension
regulates the horizontal and vertical position of the section insulator.
The suspensions and the setting loops are not included in the scope of delivery of the section
insulator and must be ordered separately.

6 Installation

WARNING
Death, severe personal injury and/or damage to the section insulator can result if proper precautions are not taken.
Observe all warnings in the operating instructions or on the product itself.
The installation and commissioning must be performed by qualified personnel only.

NOTE
The section insulator can be installed without cutting the contact wire beforehand.

6.1 Preparatory work on the catenary system

Since the design of the section insulator makes it impossible to locate the suspension at the
section insulator’s center of gravity, the section insulator should be suspended from both sides
where speeds are greater than 30 km/h. The suspensions must always be placed vertically
between the messenger wire and the section insulator. The suspensions regulate the horizontal
and vertical position of the section insulator. If the section insulator must be placed near a support
(within approx. 5 m) due to a low system height or the switch line routing, it must be installed
behind the support (in the direction of travel).
1. Determine and note the track superelevation in the area where the section insulator is to be
installed.
2. Check whether the contact wire and the messenger wire lie in the mid-perpendicular to the
rail head contact plane. If not, correct the dimension (tolerance: ±100 mm).
3. Remove any existing kinks and twists in the contact wire.
4. Measure and note the height of the contact wire at the point of installation.
5. Raise the contact wire in the installation area using the spring balance with the lifting force
generated by the pantograph (may depend on running speed). If no specification is given, use
80 N as a standard value. Note the distance lifted.
6. Add the contact wire height plus the lift distance. The lower edges of the runners of the section
insulator should be at this height after installation of all components (messenger wire
insulator, infeed, section insulator and suspension).

Maintenance

7 Maintenance

WARNING
Death or severe bodily injury can occur due to high electric voltage. De-energize the overhead line system before
performing maintenance work or safeguard the maintenance location or the overhead line system in accordance with
the regulations.

7.1 Inspection
Inspect the section insulator one week after commissioning and make any necessary adjustments
(see section 6.3 Installation sequence).
Carry out at least once a year an inspection of the section insulator. At following conditions shorter
inspection intervals are necessarily, e.g.
– high frequent operation and strong load of the section insulator or
– extrem environmental conditions (strong air pollution).
Inspection activities:
• the setting loops and the neighbouring sections of contact wire:
If visible wear is found, the parts must be replaced.
• the arcing protections:
If the interior surfaces are highly carbonized, the parts must be replaced.
• the insulating runners:
Carbon deposit can cause these to lose their insulating capacity. If cleaning is no longer
sufficient, they must be replaced.
• the measurement of hight in the mittle of insulating runner:
If the height approx. 48 mm, the insulating runners must be turned upside down.
If the min. height slower or equal than 46 mm, the insulating runners must be replaced.
• the position of the section insulator:
Check the exact position of the section insulator and if necessary, adjust the position
(see section 6.3 Installation sequence, work steps 13, 14, 15, 26 and 27).

7.2 Corrective maintenance

When the pantograph traverses the section insulator, it causes wear to the setting loop and
contact wire due to the increased contact forces.
The section insulator is subject to high wear in general. It requires regular corrective maintenance.

7.2.1 Replacing the arcing protection

1. Install the ratchet hook tackle with contact wire pull clamp and sling and relieve the tension in
the contact wire around the section insulator.
2. Remove the protective caps from the arcing protection.
3. Loosen the screws approx. 2 rotations.
