COMPARATIVES, SUPERLATIVES

What’s the difference ?

We use the superlative to speak about something that is very unique : ( pour parler de
quelque chose unique en son genre, des extrêmes.)

 Short adjectives = THE + -est


Ex = happy / the happiest
Funny / the funniest
Long / the longest

 Long adjectives = THE MOST + adj


Ex = The most famous
The most interesting
The most expensive
The most fabulous

Irregular forms : young / the youngest


tall / the tallest
old / the oldest
good / the best
bad / the worst
far / the fartest

We use the comparative to compare or to speak about the difference (equality, inferiority,
superiority) between things, people or objects :

 Short adjectives = adj + -er


Ex = happy / happier
Funny / funnier
Long / longer
Nice / nicer
Tall / taller

 Long adjectives = THE MORE + adj


Ex = The more famous
The more interesting
The more expensive
The more fabulous

Equality = As + adj + as
Jules is as tall as Sandra

Superiority = Adj + er + than ( short adj) / more + adj + than (long adj)
He is happier than her / He is more famous than her

Inferiority = Less+adj+than
Anne is less fat than Jim
