colette
Colette was a pioneer in the concept store model, blending fashion, design, art,
and culture under one roof. It curated an eclectic mix of products, ranging
from high-end fashion to niche gadgets and books. This innovative approach set
a benchmark for concept stores globally.
History of the concept store

The name "Colette" comes from the name of its founder.

The haute couture boutique was opened in 1997 by
Colette Russo. Over time, her daughter, Sarah
Andelman, assumed a significant part of the managerial
responsibilities and became the creative director and
purchasing manager of the boutique.

Sarah and Colette wanted to sell simple things

that they found in other countries, such as
American cosmetics by Kiehl's or sneakers by
Japanese brands. In addition, they bought their
favorite brands like Comme des Garçons, added
unpopular streetwear, as well as books,
magazines, cosmetics and design objects for the
home. This is how the first Parisian concept
store was born. It was here that Proenza
Schouler, Mary Katrantzou and Rodarte showed
their first collections.

The idea of concept store was simple and can be described in a short
sentence: "the choice of what we love"

The idea seems both ingenious and revolutionary in the heyday of luxury
brands: to place streetwear brands in the same room with them.

Since opening its doors in 1997, Parisian boutique colette has made
collaborative projects a focal element of its DNA, pioneering the fashion
collaboration as we know it today.
The first and one of the most iconic is the collaboration with Barbie, in which Jeremy Scott, Roksanda Ilincic and
several other designers customized the iconic doll. In the same year, Colette releases exclusive T-shirts with the
BAPE brand in colette blue. They will use this shade of blue more than once in conjunction with other brands, but
the most iconic will be the limited edition Brides de Gala shawls from Hermès. After all, before that, the legendary
brand shunned collaborations.

In 2014, Colette released almost a record number of joint collections: The Simpsons X ELEVEN PARIS,
Billionaires Boys club, Apple Watch and the rather shocking Hello Kitty X Playboy X Colette. The launch of
the latter is celebrated at the Crazy Horse cabaret, with Kanye West at the DJ console.
In 2017 colette decided to celebrate the 20th anniversary with collaborations with 20 brands
– from Nike to Balenciaga.

In November 2017, the French house Chanel began a collaboration with Colette. The collaboration with exclusive accessories, clothing and works of art was
centered around Karl Lagerfeld's illustrations, which appeared on iPhone cases, T-shirts, wallpapers and LED installations that appeared in store windows.

Unusual showcases have become another
hallmark of the concept store. Their contents
changed every week, and no one knew what to
expect next: IKEA bags or Louis Vuitton coats, toy
houses or neon dinosaurs. Or maybe all the
windows will be given to the Apple Iwatch.
The store offers art, fashion, design, music and
street style. Designer Milan Vukmirovic is joined
by Guillaume Wolff as a co-author. The distinctive
Colette logo with a blue dot was created by
Guillaume Wolff.
Colette debuted its inaugural music compilations
with Colette N°1 in March 2001, spotlighting artists
from the electronic music realm such as Peaches and
Gonzales, alongside Charles Wilp and Erik Satin.
One of Colette's biggest fans, Karl Lagerfeld, commented
about the duo: "It's impossible to imagine any of them alone.
It is this kind of osmosis between mother and daughter that
turns Colette into Colette."
On December 20, 2017, Colette closes. As Madame Rousseau herself admits, she decided to leave the store
and "take care of herself," and "Colette cannot exist without Colette in any way." Sarah Andelman wrote
on her official Instagram: "All good things come to an end."
In December 2020, Colette announced the release of
the documentary "Colette, Mon Amour", which tells
about the history and influence that the boutique
has had on the fashion world. The painting, shot by
Hughes Lawson-Bodie, is dedicated to the work of
Colette Rousseau and her daughter Sarah Andelman,
as well as the last days of the Paris store's
operation.

"Many people, coming to Paris, first went to

Colette, and only then to the Eiffel Tower,"
Kanye West says in this film and does not
exaggerate at all.
