Controlling Surface Temperature

At steady state, the heat flow through the insulation to the outside surface equals the
heat flow from the surface to the ambient air. In equation form:

qins = qsurf

Or

(k/X)·A·(Thot–Tsurf) = ro·A·(Tsurf–Tamb)

Rearranging, this equation yields:

X = (k/ro)·[(Thot–Tsurf)/(Tsurf–Tamb)]

Since the ratio of temperature differences is known, the required thickness can be
calculated by multiplying by the ratio of the insulation material conductivity to the
surface coefficient.

X = Insulation thickness (m)

ro =external Surface coefficient

External Surface coefficient is affected by the type of surface of insulation as well as

ventilation of the surface:

For Thermobreak (foil faced)

Still air conditions 5.7 W/m2K
Moderate ventilation (2.2 m/s): 22.7 W/m2K
High Ventilation ( 3.3m/s) : 33.3 W/m2K
