No road surface is entirely smooth. For this reason, the vehicles wheels must be capable of some
up and down movement at the same time as they are rotating. At high speed, these movements
have to take place extremely quickly.
Road shock and impact are unpleasant for the car’s occupants and may even represent a health
or injury risk, road safety.
To avoid these undesirable effects, every vehicle is equipped with some form of suspension.
The suspension connects the body of the vehicle with the wheels, and carries out the following
function:
a) Absorbs road surface irregularities and ensures good wheel grip to the road.
b) Transmits the driving and braking forces.
c) Supports the body on the axles.

All of these components, springs and shock absorbers are usually used in all suspension
systems while the others found in only some systems.
Function of Springs
The springs fitted between the wheels and the frame allows the wheels to move up and down
without causing a similar movement of the frame, as in shown Fig (1.4).
It prevents road shocks being transmitted to the frame and allows the wheels to follow the
irregular contour of the road surface.
Springs absorb motion from the tires. The type of spring are as:
•Coil Springs
One of the most common spring designs, coil spring is a torsion bar coiled around an axis. It
expands and compresses to absorb the tyre motions.

•Leaf Springs
Many metal layers (leaves) bound tightly as one unit to absorb the shock, the leaf springs are
one of the oldest spring systems. Some heavy-duty vehicles and trucks still make use of them.

•Torsion bars
Usually, a steel bar is used. Its twisting properties mimic the coil-spring movement. This system
was used extensively in Europe and in the US during the 1950s and 1960s.
Unfortunately, while great at absorbing energy, springs do not dissipate it very well.
