Parts of a Bridge

Abutment - These are the supporting structures at the ends of a


bridge that bear the load and resist the horizontal forces.

Deck - The deck is the surface that carries the traffic


across the bridge. It is the visible part of the bridge.

Parapet- is a low protective barrier or wall located at the edge


of a bridge

Bearing - is a component that allows the bridge to move


slightly as a response to forces

Footing - is the structure that transfers the load from the bridge to the ground below
Column - is a vertical supporting structure that helps bear the load of the bridge deck and transfer it to the foundation.
Piles - are long, slender columns driven into the ground to provide foundational support for the bridge structure
Bent Beam - is a horizontal beam that connects the top of the bridge columns or piers.
Girder - is a large, horizontal, and principal support beam that helps to carry the load of the bridge, including the weight of
vehicles and other forces.
