PROBLEM 7-5 Give the systematic (IUPAC) names of the following alkenes.

a) CH CH-CH2
CHCH3)2 (b) CH,(CH2)s--CH,CH CH2 (c CH2 CH CH2 CHCH2 (d) CH2 C CH CH CH2 e)
CH CH

Solution

IUPAC Name:

a) 4-methyl-1-pentene

b) 3-methyleneheptane

C) 1,4-pentadiene

d) 1,2,4-pentatriene

e) 2,5-dimethylcyclopenta-1,3-diene

f) 3-methylene-4-vinylcyclohexene

g) 3-phenylprop-1-ene

Explanation:

a) Here, five carbon atom is present with one double bond in 1st position, called 1-pentene.Here
methyl is attached in 4th position, so it\'s IUPAC NAME is 4-methyl-1-pentene.

b) Here seven carbon atom is present, called heptane. In this methylene is attached in 3rd
position. So its called 3-methyleneheptane

c) Here, five carbon atom is present with two double bonds at 1 and 4, so it\'s called 1,4-
pentadiene.

d) Here, five carbon atom is present with three double bonds at 1,2,4 position. So it\'s called
1,2,4-pentatriene.
e) Here, cyclopenta-1,3-diene is the main core.In this methyl is attached in 2nd and 5th position.
So its called 2,5-dimethylcyclopenta-1,3-diene.

f) Here, cyclohexene is the main core. In this methylene is attached in 3rd position and vinyl is
attached in 4th position. So it\'s called 3-methylene-4-vinylcyclohexene.

g) Here, three carbon atom with one double bond is present, so its called 1-propene.In this
phenyl is attached in 3rd position. So it\'s called 3-phenylprop-1-ene.
