Monarchy of Cambodia
● The King's power is limited to that of a symbolic figurehead to whom people are to
give love and respect.

● Since 1993, the King of Cambodia is an elected monarch, making Cambodia one of
the few elective monarchies of the world.

● The king is elected for life from among male descendants of King Ang Duong who
are at least 30 years old by the Royal Council of the Throne, which consists of
several senior political and religious figures.
Role
● Cambodia's constitution, promulgated in 1993 stipulated the king's role as a mainly
ceremonial one. It declared that the king "shall reign, but not govern" as well as
being the "symbol of national unity and continuity".

- Appointing the Prime Minister of Cambodia and the Cabinet of Cambodia.


- Appointing a fixed number of members to serve on state institutions such as the
Senate and the Constitutional Council
- Awarding of national honours.
The Future of Monarchy in Cambodia
1. A young protégé of the French (1941-45);
2. An “absolute” monarch under the Japanese tutelage (1945);
3. A semi-constitution monarch, again, under the French (1946-52);
4. The King who won independence (1952-54);
5. An absolutist who abdicated and established his own political party (1954-55);
6. A populist/autocratic/non-aligned leader/Head of State (1950-70);
7. Head of State of Democratic Kampuchea (1970-75-79);
8. A savior of the nation vis-a-vis the Khmer Rouge and the Vietnamese
(1979-89-93);
9. King, again, from 1993 until his second abdication on 15 October 2004, then
becoming the King Father until 2012.
Norodom Sihamoni
● Now is the King of Cambodia Norodom Sihamoni
● Since 2004-
● He is the oldest son of King Sihanouk and Queen
Norodom Monineath.
● He was Cambodia's ambassador to UNESCO and
was named by a nine-member throne council to
become the next king after his father Norodom
Sihanouk abdicated in 2004.
