Selection is the process of differentiating between applicants in order to identify and hire those with a
greater likelihood of success in a job. It is the process of picking the right candidates from the pool of
applicants.

Selection is significant because it has impact on work performance and employee cost. Selection is
generally done by the human resources department often in conclusion with the line managers
Selection Policy
A good selection policy is essential. Management needs to consider the following factors in the
development of its selection policy:

 Equal Employment Opportunities (EEO): hiring women, minority, older employees and
handicapped.
 Quality of People (education, attitude, culture, technical skills)
 Sources of People : internal vs. external; domestic vs. international
 Management Roles: who will make the final decision to hire, what is the role of HR
department? What is the role of line manager?
 Selection Techniques: interviews, psychological tests, assessment centres, Medical
Check-Up Tests.
 Employment consultant
 Industrial Relations: trade union will be recognized or not. What types of relationship?
 Legal Issues
 Organizational Strategic Business Objectives
 Costs: What is the budget? Who will pay the costs? Who will authorize it?

Selection Criteria
Selection criteria are key factors in making a decision to hire or not to hire a person. It may
include qualification, experience, special skills, abilities or aptitudes. Selection criteria should be
job-related.

organization can hire the qualified employees. By this way, working performance, productivity
and organization’s profit can be improved and accidental rates and costs can be reduced.
