opening hymn

David Rennison is at St Leonards. We continue our series of sermons on the book Jonah At services other than baptisms, we are no longer passing round the collection plates. Please place you offering on the plate by the door.

Revive thy work, O Lord, thy mighty arm make bare; speak with the voice that wakes the dead, and make thy people hear. Revive thy work, O Lord, disturb this sleep of death; quicken the smould'ring embers now by thine almighty breath. Revive thy work, O Lord, create soul-thirst for thee; and hung'ring for the Bread of Life O may our spirits be. Revive thy work, O Lord, exalt thy precious Name; and, by the Holy Ghost, our love for thee and thine inflame. Revive thy work, O Lord, give pentecostal show'rs: the glory shall be all thine own, the blessing, Lord, be ours.

Bombs in Iraq's Mosul kill five, injures 22 police

MOSUL, Iraq | Wed Oct 26, 2011 5:40pm IST

MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - At least five people were killed, including three Iraqi soldiers, and another 22 wounded when two car bombs and a roadside bomb exploded in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Wednesday, hospital and police sources said. Explosives packed into a parked car went off near an army patrol, killing three soldiers and wounding four passersby in eastern Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of the capital Baghdad, police sources said. Another car bomb detonated nearby, killing two people and wounding 18 others, while a roadside bomb went off in the same area, injuring two street cleaners, the sources said. Violence has subsided sharply in Iraq since the sectarian strife in 2006-07, but Sunni Islamist insurgents and Shi'ite Muslim mlitias still commit daily bombings and assassinations.

nineveh - mosul Mosul is a city in northern Iraq and the capital of the Ninawa Governorate, some 400 km (250 mi) northwest of Baghdad. The original city stands on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh on the east bank, but the metropolitan area has now grown to encompass substantial areas on both banks, with five bridges linking the two sides. The majority of its population is now Arab (with Assyrians, Armenian, Turcoman and Kurdish minorities). It is Iraq's third largest city after Baghdad and Basra. The fabric Muslin, long manufactured here, is named after this city. Another historically important product of the area is Mosul marble. In 1987, the city's population was 664,221 people; the 2002 population estimate was 1,740,000, and by 2008 was estimated to be 1,800,000. The city of Mosul is home to the University of Mosul, one of the largest educational and research centres in Iraq and the Middle East. The city is also a historic centre for the Nestorian Christianity of the Assyrians, containing the tombs of several Old Testament prophets such as Jonah.

psalm Psalm 85 Jonah 3

A reading from the book of Jonah

conversion of nineveh The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you. So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a days walk. And he cried out, Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown! And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. Then he had a proclamation made in Nineveh: By the decree of the king and his nobles: No human being or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything. They shall not feed, nor shall they drink water. Human beings and animals shall be covered with sackcloth, and they shall cry mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways and from the violence that is in their hands. Who knows? God may relent and change his mind; he may turn from his fierce anger, so that we do not perish. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God

Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.

Mercy and truth are met together, righteousness and peace have kissed each other; Truth shall spring up from the earth and righteousness look down from heaven. L Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. The Lord will indeed give all that is good, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness shall go before him and direct his steps in the way. L Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.

But if you turn aside and forsake my statutes and my commandments that I have set before you, and go and serve other gods and worship them, then I will pluck you up from the land that I have given you; and this house, which I have consecrated for my name, I will cast out of my sight, and will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples. This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God

Lord, you were gracious to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob. You forgave the offence of your people and covered all their sins. You laid aside all your fury and turned from your wrathful indignation. L Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. Restore us again, O God our Saviour, and let your anger cease from us. Will you be displeased with us for ever? Will you stretch out your wrath from one generation to another? Will you not give us life again, that your people may rejoice in you? Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. L Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us your salvation. I will listen to what the Lord God will say, for he shall speak peace to his people and to the faithful, that they turn not again to folly. Truly, his salvation is near to those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. L Show us your mercy, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.

gradual hymn

Thus Solomon finished the house of the LORD and the kings house; all that Solomon had planned to do in the house of the LORD and in his own house he successfully accomplished.

To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of Hosts, today; second reading with thy wonted loving-kindness A reading from the Second Book of Chronicles hear thy servants as they pray, and thy fullest benediction 2 Chronicles 7:11-20 shed within its walls alway. Here vouchsafe to all thy servants what they ask of thee to gain, what they gain from thee for ever with the blessd to retain, and hereafter in thy glory evermore with thee to reign. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Then the LORD appeared to Solomon in the night and said to him: I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice. When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. For now I have chosen and consecrated this house so that my name may be there for ever; my eyes and my heart will be there for all time. As for you, if you walk before me, as your father David walked, doing according to all that I have commanded you and keeping my statutes and my ordinances, then I will establish your royal throne, as I made covenant with your father David saying, You shall never lack a successor to rule over Israel.

during the giving of communion

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke Glory to you. O Lord Luke 11:29-32` When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, This generation is an evil generation; it asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be to this generation. The queen of the South will rise at the judgement with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here! The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgement with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here! This is the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ

among those who are unwell

We turn to Christ anew who hear his call today, his way to walk, his will pursue, his word obey. To serve him as our King and of his kingdom learn, from sin and every evil thing to him we turn. We trust in Christ to save; in him new life begins: who by his cross a ransom gave from all our sins. Our spirits strength and stay who when all flesh is dust will keep us on that final day, in him we trust. We would be true to him till earthly journeys end, whose love no passing years can dim, our changeless friend. May we who bear his name our faith and love renew, to follow Christ our single aim, and find him true.
TIMOTHY DUDLEY-SMITH b 1926
Timothy Dudley-Smith CCL Licence No 244236

O thou, before the world began ordained a Sacrifice for man, and by the eternal Spirit made an Offering in the sinner's stead; our everlasting Priest art thou, pleading thy Death for sinners now. Thy offering still continues new before the righteous Father's view; thyself the Lamb for ever slain, thy Priesthood doth unchanged remain; thy years, O God, can never fail, nor thy blest work within the veil. O that our faith may never move, but stand unshaken as thy love! Sure evidence of things unseen, now let it pass the years between, and view thee bleeding on the Tree, my Lord, my God, who dies for me.

words and music The Alleluias at the end of the gradual hymn are what Purcell set at the end of his anthem O God thou art my God, the source of the tune we know as Westminster Abbey. Abbey The key of the anthem is too high for most people, so it is transposed down today. Youll note that the first two verses have alternating lines of 8 and 7 syllables, whereas the Alleluias make all lines 8 syllables. So there has to be a quick snatch to get them to fit, compared with what we are used to. Two slurred notes, which go to one syllable in the earlier verses have to be split.

preachers Our preacher on 27 November will be Adrian Bateman Bateman. Adrian goes to his local panel to assess his call to Self Supporting Ministry on 17 November. The Rev Diane Kershaw will preaching on 4 December. Diane is being appointed joint assistant curate of St Paul's and St James and Christopher Shiregreen. The Rev David Dean-Revill at Shiregreen will supervise her training in baptism, weddings, funerals, but she will look to develop her ministry of prayer and mission within St Paul's parish at least. Change your church, O God to be more the church you long to see, more the people you have claimed, more the children you have named! Change your Church! Renew us, Lord, till we all reflect your Word! Make of us a shining light ever pleasing in your sight! God, revive us by your love; send your Spirit to reprove! Take away sins awful blight, help us all to do the right! Cultivate us, God, so we, grafted to your vine, may be, thriving best, within your care, blossoming, your love to share. God, review our urgent schemes! Guide our vision, mold our dreams! As we, toward your future move, all our being, God, improve! May we, by Christs love, be warmed! Bless your church, by faith reformed; hastened by your Spirits pace: God renew us by your grace.

Thurs 10th November 1.00 - 4.15 at the Town Hall A chance for communities to explore what we think about how people in Sheffield live together and explore the priorities outlined in the Councils cohesion agenda. The Community Cohesion Advisory Group is a community-led initiative which comments on the Councils plans and proposals. It stems from the former Preventing Violent Extremism Advisory Group. With a changing agenda, both nationally and locally, and following a conference in March 2011, this is a further opportunity for communities to get involved with shaping local initiatives to meet the needs of Sheffield. The Advisory Group is looking to involve new members interested in shaping community cohesion from communities across the city.

margetson christmas market 3 december The Margetson Christmas Market will be held on Saturday, 3 December 12.00 - 4.00. To prevent the weather from spoiling the fun, the stalls will be indoors. Without the Parson Cross Library to spread the event out, the Market will be a scaled-down version held mainly inside the St Thomas More Community Centre. However, the FUN has not been scaled down! A variety of activities have been selected to make the event fun for the whole family, with a Fairground Ride, Hook-a-Duck, Santa's Grotto, Circus Workshops, and a Zumba demonstration. As we did last year, there will be therapists to give us some pampering, hopefully doing nail art and Indian head massage. Since we are still in the planning stages, there is much yet to be confirmed.
