EQUILIBRIUM OF A RIGID BODY II

01006803 ENGINEERING MECHANICS

Equilibrium in Three Dimension
The conditions for equilibrium of a rigid body subjected to a three-dimensional force
system require that both the resultant force and resultant couple moment acting on the
body be equal to zero .
Support Reactions in Three Dimension
General rules of support reactions
 A force is developed by a support that restricts the translation of its attached member.

 A couple moment is developed when rotation of the attached member is prevented.

Statically Determinacy
Statically determinate problems can be analyzed using the equilibrium
condition alone.

** Unknown loadings ≤ Equations of equilibrium**

Statically Indeterminacy

Statically Indeterminate problems can not be analyzed using the

equilibrium equation.

 An object with redundant supports.

 An object with improper supports.

Statically Indeterminacy
Redundant Constraints

When a body has redundant supports, that is, more supports than are necessary to
hold it in equilibrium, it becomes statically indeterminate.

** Unknown loadings > Equations of equilibrium**

Equilibrium in Three Dimension
Improper Constraints

An objects has improper supports when it has inadequate (not enough)

supports to maintain it in equilibrium.

In three dimensions, a body will be improperly constrained if;

 the lines of action of all the reactive forces intersect a common axis
 reactive forces are all parallel
Equilibrium in Three Dimension
Improper Constraints

 The supports exert only concurrent forces or the lines of action of all the reactive
forces intersect a common axis
