Soekarno was born on June 6, 1901, in Surabaya, and was given the name
Kusno Sosrodihardjo. His parents renamed him Soekarno later, after he survived a
serious illness. Soekarno’s father was Raden Soekemi Sosrodihardjo, a Muslim
aristocrat and school teacher from Java. His mother, Ida Ayu Nyoman Rai, was a
Hindu of the Brahmin caste from Bali.
Young Soekarno went to a local elementary school until 1912. He then
attended a Dutch middle school in Mojokerto, followed in 1916 by a Dutch high
school in Surabaya. The young man was gifted with a photographic memory and a
talent for languages, including Javanese, Balinese, Sundanese, Dutch, English,
French, Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, German, and Japanese.
In 1927, he became the leader of the Indonesian Independence Movement
Party and fought for the country’s independence from the Netherlands. In 1945,
Soekarno became the first president of the new Republic of Indonesia, a position
he held for almost 21 years. Soekarno died on June 21, 1970.

The two crows challanged each other to see which could fly higher while carrying a sack of burden.
The first crow filled his sack with cotton. The second crow looked up to the sky. He saw the sky was cloudy so
he filled his sack with salt. The first crow laughed at him as he carried heavier burden.
The two crow flew high and started to race. A moment later, the rain fell. The salt of the second crow began to
dissolve because of the rain but the cotton of the first crow got heavier and heavier. It absorbed the rain water.
Finally, the first crow didn’t have strength to fly and fell to the ground. He admitted that the second crow was
cleverer.
