Bar coding —
Test specifications for
bar code verifiers
ICS 35. 1 80
DD ENV 12647:1997
National foreword
This publication is not to be regarded as a British Standard.
It is being issued in the Draft for Development series of publications and is of
a provisional nature because the subj ect matter is still under development
requiring wiser exposure. It should be applied on this provisional basis, so that
information and experience of its practical application may be obtained.
Comments arising from the use of this Draft for Development are requested so
that UK experience can be reported to the European organization responsible
for its conversion into a European Standard. A review of this publication will
be initiated 2 years after its publication by the European organization so that
a decision can be taken on its status at the end of its three-year life. The
commencement of the review period will be notified by an announcement in
Update Standards.
According to the replies received by the end of the review period, the
responsible BSI Committee will decide whether to support the conversion into
a European Standard, to extend the life of the prestandard or to withdraw it.
Comments should be sent in writing to the Secretary of BSI Technical
Committee IST/34, Bar Coding, at 389 Chiswick High Road, London W4 4AL,
giving the document reference and clause number and proposing, where
possible, an appropriate revision of the text.
Cross-references
Attention is drawn to the fact that CEN and CENELEC Standards normally
include an annex which lists normative references to international
publications with their corresponding European publications. The British
Standards which implement international or European publications referred
to in this document may be found in the BSI Standards Catalogue under the
section entitled “International Standards Correspondence Index”, or using the
“Find” facility of the BSI Standards Electronic Catalogue.
Summary of pages
This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii,
the ENV title page, pages 2 to 1 0 and a back cover.
This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had
amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on
the inside front cover.

Reference test symbols
Reference test symbols shall include sets of symbols in “EAN/UPC”, “Code 39” and “Code 1 28” symbologies,
with varying grades for each of the parameters analysed in the prEN 1 635 scan reflectance profile. A
recommended selection comprises the following:
— “EAN” or “UPC” symbols in accordance with EN 797, with varying parameter grades
(X dimension 0,330 mm)
— “Code 39” symbols in accordance with EN 800, with varying parameter grades (two sets, one with X
dimension 0,1 91 mm, the other with X dimension 0,600 mm)
— Modulation grades 4, 2, 0
— Decodability grades 4, 2, 0
— Defects (void) grades 4, 2, 0
— “Code 1 28” symbols in accordance with EN 799, with varying parameter grades (two sets, one with X
dimension 0,1 91 mm, the other with X dimension 0,600 mm)
— Decodability grades 4, 2, 0
— Defects (spot) grades 4, 2, 0
The above selection provides a representative set of test symbols which will enable all essential parameters
to be compared as measured with the actual values certified by the supplier of the symbols and confirm
conformity with this European Prestandard.
Annex B (normative)
Safety and electro-magnetic compatibility requirements
B.1 Electrical safety
To ensure the protection of operators and others from electrical shock, verification equipment shall comply
with the requirements of EN 60950 for information technology equipment with a rated voltage not
exceeding 600 volts. Manufacturers of equipment shall indicate the protection class against electrical shock
in accordance with this standard.
B.2 Laser safety
A verifier using a laser tube or laser diode as light source shall comply with the requirements of EN 60825.
Manufacturers shall indicate the classification appropriate to the equipment and relevant warning labels
shall be affixed to the equipment and necessary precautions reproduced in the operating instructions.
B.3 Electromagnetic compatibility
B.3.1 Emissions
The generic emission standard with which verification equipment shall conform is EN 50081-1 . Limits and
methods of measurement of radio interference caused by information technology equipment are defined in
EN 55022. Verification equipment shall comply at least with the requirements for equipment classified as
Class A (30 m. protection distance) under this standard.
B.3.2 Immunity
Operation in conditions of interference from other equipment shall be in accordance with EN 50082-1 , or,
if appropriate for the environment in which the equipment is designed to be used, EN 50082-2.
Annex C (informative)
