POST-DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

I. Answer the following prompts:

1. How does mechanical digestion affect chemical digestion?

● Mechanical digestion prepares food for chemical digestion, where it

involves physically breaking down food substances into smaller particles
by the process of chewing and mixing it with saliva to more efficiently
undergo chemical digestion. The role of chemical digestion is to further
degrade the molecular structure of the ingested compounds by digestive
enzymes into a form that is absorbable into the bloodstream.

2. Explain the importance of the gallbladder and cholecystokinin to lipid digestion.

● The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile from the liver. Once released,
bile helps your body break down and absorb fats from food in the first
section of the small intestine (the duodenum). During lipid digestion, fats
and proteins trigger cholecystokinin to release from the gallbladder and
pancreas. To ensure that food is absorbed, they transport bile and enzymes
to the duodenum, so it plays a fundamental role in the process of
digestion.
