Important
• The examination regulations of the University of Pretoria apply.
• The departmental rules relevant to electronically graded assessments apply. By submitting any file for evaluation
on the AMS, you confirm that you are aware of, have studied the latest version of, know the details of, accept and
will abide by the Electronic Evaluation Rules and Policy of the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer
Engineering as published on their ClickUP page, and you are aware of the fact that any submission that does not
follow the exact instructions given in those rules and this question paper will not be evaluated correctly. You will
receive zero marks for that submission component.
• Use clearly justified and educated engineering approximations and state assumptions, where/as appropriate. Do this
in your rough work if the submission XLSX does not allow for that.
• Show all calculations where applicable in your rough work. Always give equations in symbolic form before
numerical values are substituted. Clearly specify definitions if notation different from the prescribed class notes or
textbook is used.
• No requests and queries will be entertained without rough work showing evidence to support the
request/claim/query. If there is no evidence of the work being completed and submitted during the assessment
period, queries can not be handled. Submit your rough work (blue books, fill in paper pages, etc.). These will not
be evaluated. In the event that staff needs to update submission XLSX files, the submission automatically becomes
a late submission with the late submission penalty being applied. Use the grace period to ensure your answers are
captured correctly.

Part B: SU 6-12

Question 1: Opamp filter 12

You have to design a receiver filter for a transmission system that transmits a download and upload channel
separately. The download channel is transmitted from 0 – 19 kHz, while the upload channel is transmitted at
21 - 40 kHz. A carrier tone is transmitted at 20 kHz and should be filtered out in the band 19 – 21 kHz. You
decide to implement a state-variable filter.

1.1) Determine the quality factor of the filter that will meet the above requirements. (2)

1.2) Design a state-variable filter to meet the given frequency specifications while achieving a Q-value as (10)
determined in 1.1. Ensure that the magnitude of the incoming and LP/HP output signals are the same. You
may assume that capacitance values throughout are the same. You are allowed to make educated assumptions
regarding the resistor values. Ensure that the final component values are standard and practical values.

Question 2: Oscillator design 6

2.1) Design a basic Wien-bridge oscillator with an oscillation frequency as provided in your submission
XLSX. Ensure that the final component values are standard and practical values.

Question 3: Multivibrator circuit design 6

3.1) Design a basic free-running multivibrator with an oscillation frequency that can be digitally adjusted to
be equal the two frequencies assigned to you in the submission XLXS file. You decide to implement an
approach where you replace R in the lecture notes with RA. Next, you take a resistor, RB, and you connect a
digitally controllable switch in series with RB. This combination of the switch and RB you place in parallel
with RA. This allows you to have an effective resistance of R = RA (switch open) or R = RA||RB (switch closed).
Draw a circuit diagram in your rough work to clarify your understanding of the operation. Ensure that the
final component values are standard and practical values.
