But more recently, many ‘of us-can also add to that list the moment the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I was announced on 8th September 2022. A life marked by duty and dedication to her role as monarch, we had noted her frailty during the celebrations for her Platinum Jubilee with a sense of inevitability, and yet it was the news none of us wanted to hear. Queen Elizabeth II was the unexpected heir to the throne, dedicating seventy years of her life to become the longest-serving, most respected and beloved figurehead of the British monarchy. There is no doubt her arly training in royal duty and her peerless ability o remain composed in public served her well throughout her reign, right up to the end, EARLY LIFE Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born on 2ist April 1926, in Mayfair, London ~ the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York. Despite being third in ine to the throne after her father and his brother, the Prince of Wales, royal tradition dictated that asa female descendant, she was not expected to rule, With the country still recovering from the First World War and now facing the imminent General Strike, Elizabeth was growing up in a time of great upheaval, but her family provided a peaceful and loving environment for her. “We have long wanted a child to make ‘our happiness complete,” wrote the Duke. The public associated this historic event with the beginning of anew Elizabethan age that would restore the country’s prominence in the world, The atmosphere in London was filled with exeitement and anticipation, with countless street parties held ‘throughout the country. More than half ofthe adult population watched the coronation on television, hile others listened on the radio or witnessed the event in person on the streets of London. The celebrations continued in London with a flypast of military helicopters and a display of aircraft, including the RAF Red Arrows, as well as street parties and other local events around the country.
