IHL Unit Internship Programme 2024: Call for Applications

Call for Interns


The International Committee of the Red Cross’ Regional Delegation for India,
Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives at New Delhi (RD) is calling for applications
from eligible students for its internship programme, for placement within the
Legal Unit of the Regional Delegation between January and July 2024.
The objective of the RD’s Internship Programme is to promote a better
understanding of the work of the ICRC in general and to expose students to
international humanitarian law (IHL). The internship opportunity provides
students from different academic backgrounds with the opportunity to develop
their knowledge and receive practical training in IHL.

Eligibility
In order to be eligible to apply for the internship programme, applicants must:
(a) Have qualified to participate in the Quarter Final Rounds of the Henry
Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition’s India National Rounds
conducted at ISIL in September 2023,
(b) Possess basic computer skills - MS doc, PPTs, internet navigation etc,
(c) Have excellent research and writing skills,
(d) Have an interest in and awareness of current world and South Asian
affairs,
(e) Be fluent in spoken and written English,
(f) Be willing to assist in documentation and administrative tasks,
(g) Be able to foster and maintain good interpersonal relations in a multi-
cultural setwork environment, and
(h) Be an Indian national.
Areas of Responsibility
Selected interns would be responsible for:
• Supporting the IHL Unit in the planning, coordination and
undertaking of programmes and activities relating to the ICRC’s
Advisory Services on IHL.
• Conducting independent and supervised research on and analysis of
specific legal issues, as well as broader sectors of relevant national
legal systems.
• Drafting legal notes/analyses and contributes on legal aspects to
working papers, summary reports, `non-papers` related to the
delegation’s activities and objectives.

Location
This internship opportunity will be available only for candidates who are
available to work full time, in person at the ICRC Regional Delegation for India,
Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives in New Delhi.
Remote internships are not feasible.
Stipend

Interns will be entitled to receive a stipend of Rs. 15,000/- per month to


cover transportation and other incidental costs.

Internship Duration and Preferred Dates


The duration of the internship would be a minimum of one month and a
maximum of three months – between January and July 2024 (inclusive).
Candidates are required to indicate their preferred dates for the
commencement of their internship, and the desired duration (one, two or
three months) clearly in their letter of motivation.

Please indicate ‘ICRC IHL Internship 2024 – First Name, Last Name” in the
subject line of your message.

After an initial screening of applications, shortlisted candidates will be called


for interviews, scheduled to be conducted in the week of 11th-15th December
2023.
Offers of internship will be extended to successful candidates by Friday, 23rd
December 2023.

Documents Checklist
(1) A letter of motivation (no more than 500 words) clearly specifying the
candidate’s preferred dates for the full-time internship
(2) A detailed CV (no more than 2 pages)
(3) A brief writing sample (no more than 1500-3000 words, may be a
short article/blog or excerpt of a longer research paper, published or
unpublished) and
(4) A letter of recommendation/no objection certificate from the head of
the institution/college/University, confirming the availability of the
candidate through the duration of the candidate’s preferred dates for
the internship.

Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Only successful


applicants will be contacted.
