A trip to Bihar would be incomplete without a visit to Madhubani district, whether to just admire

the painted motifs on the walls of houses, to purchase sheets and support local artists, or to
participate in workshops to learn how to make Madhubani art. Madhubani Art is the "Loukik
Parampar," the folk heritage of Beautiful Bihar. Legend has it that the style evolved in the
historic city of Mithila when King Janaka invited female artists to paint his daughter Sita's
wedding moments. From the Puranas to the present, each piece of its spectacular appearance
offers a tale of history, heritage and social fabric, solidifying its uniqueness as a timeless icon to
the outside world.

Madhubani paintings are known for their story-telling style and frequently feature themes
include the region's flora and fauna, geometric patterns, village life, and mythological and
religious imagery like Rama, Krishna, Shiva, and Durga. Traditionally, events like births,
marriages, and religious ceremonies were commemorated by floor and wall paintings, known
locally as aipanas and bhitti chitras, respectively. More ornate paintings, known as kohabars,
were saved for marriage celebrations. The characteristic feature is the border- which is heavily
patterned. All vacant spots and gaps are filled with lines and crosses, resulting in an intricately
detailed background.

Solid colors devoid of any gradations adorn the figures and themes. The colors used in traditional
paintings are made from natural materials: the orange of the Palash flower, the green leaf of the
applewood tree, the red of the Kusum flower, the white of rice powder, and the blue that is
extracted from indigo. Black color is made by combining blight with cow dung. Yellow is made
from turmeric and milk made from Banyan leaves. Originally created on mud walls that had been
plastered with lime or cleaned with cow dung, the paintings are now produced on a variety of
media, including paper, fabric, and cement walls. The traditional tools used are also obtained
locally like twigs, brushes, nib-pens, and matchsticks.

With time the art of Madhubani, as well as its accompanying testimony of the vibrancy of a place
and the milieu of its people got lost in the alleys and buried underground. Following the
devastating Bihar earthquake of 1934, William Archer, the British colonial officer in Madhubani
district, travelled there to monitor relief activities and discovered astounding wall murals. Fast
forward to the unfortunate 1960s when an intense drought crumbled the rural life of Madhubani
district an IAS officer, Mr. Bhashkar Kulkerni, prompted the All India Handicrafts Board to
motivate a few women to pass along their ritualistic wall paintings onto paper as part of social
entrepreneurship. Madhubani folk art excited emotions after that, thanks to the portable format of
painting. Since then, Madhubani has evolved and earned the status of one of the most well
known Indian folk styles. It has fought for its existence, like an ever- flowing river, and survived.
So, when you visit our beautiful Bihar, make sure to dedicate a few hours to this Beautiful Art.
