Discovery Guide: Lesson 28

High School
Looking Back
Let’s review what you discovered in John 20.
1. Who saw evidence on the first day of the week that Jesus had risen from the dead?

2. What evidence do we have that Jesus has risen from the dead?

3. Jesus’s resurrection proves He is God. What else does Jesus’s resurrection reveal about God?

4. How can believers’ lives testify to the truth of Jesus’s resurrection?

Looking Forward
First Day: Read John 21:1-14.
Jesus met the disciples after they had spent a long night fishing.

5. How did the disciples realize that it was Jesus who had called to them? (See also Luke 5:4-6.)

6. What lessons might Jesus have been teaching by giving them a catch of fish and breakfast?
(See also Matthew 4:19.)

7. In what ways has Jesus provided for you? Do you trust in God’s provision daily?

Second Day: Read John 21:15-23.

Jesus reinstated Peter, then commanded Peter to follow Him.

8. What was the work Jesus asked Peter to do? What did Jesus want to hear from Peter first?

9. What problem lies at the heart of Peter’s question about John?

10. How can you know what God is calling you to do with your life?

Third Day: Read John 21:24-25.

John concluded his written testimony about Jesus.

11. What are John’s three claims regarding his Gospel?

12. How does God give us what we need to do His work? (See also Romans 12:1-2;
Galatians 5:22-26; Philippians 2:12-13; and 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24.)

13. How has God helped or corrected you to walk in obedience to His commands?

Take to Heart
Fishermen hope to catch fish. The disciples had caught nothing all night. Once Jesus got
involved, though, they caught a boatload! Jesus even provided a fish breakfast on the beach. It
was time for these men to recognize their own plans were useless without Jesus. Although He
had called them to be witnesses to the world, they had abandoned Him when it mattered most.
Peter even denied Jesus three times. Graciously, Jesus called Peter back into His service three
times. It seems unbelievable to think this small band of ordinary men could evangelize the world, but
Jesus equips His people to do His work. They became wildly successful fishers of men. What work
has Jesus called you to? Depend on Jesus and you will have success.

“Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the
whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” (John 21:25)

Jesus proved His love for you.

How might your love for Jesus propel you into service for Him?

Do at least one of these activities on your own, with your family, or with your BSF adult.

Option 1: Review the attributes of God covered in this study. Which of these have you seen at
work in your life? Write a journal entry to God expressing all that He means to you.

Option 2: Peter and the other disciples fished but needed Jesus to provide for them. Read
Deuteronomy 8:17-18; Haggai 1:4-11; and Luke 12:22-30. Write a slogan or catchphrase that
captures the viewpoint in these passages. Create a poster with the catchphrase and put it
where you will see it every day.
