1. Introduction

A the leading prestigious science publisher in the US Online learning is a term to describe
an emerging approach to learning at students’ own premise through advanced information-
communication technologies (such as Blackboard, Moodle, YouTube, and Virtual Reality)
either asynchronously or synchronously. It offers speed, convenience, and versatility in
education, with various forms such as one-on-one sessions or group learning. The COVID-
19 pandemic from 2019 to 2022 accelerated the adoption of online learning as schools and
public areas closed, compelling students to stay at home. This period underscored the
significance and convenience of online learning. However, even before the pandemic, the
growth of online learning was evident. From 2016 to 2019, participation skyrocketed from
26 million to 76 million, tripling in numbers. By the end of 2021, this figure is measured to
more than double compared to 2019, reaching 189 million students, reflecting the
widespread embrace of this new educational paradigm. Overall, the numbers prove it all,
aim of this research is to mention the pros and cons of online learning, hoping that will help
students or pupils find the best method for yourself.
2. Discussion of findings

2.1. Advantages of online learning

"It makes no sense to expect all students to take the same amount of time to achieve the
same objectives," says Benjamin Bloom.

Effective online learning involves setting appropriate times and levels. With part-time jobs,
adapting to a fixed class schedule can be challenging, but online platforms offer flexibility.
Recording lessons allows for later review. Traditional classes may struggle to accommodate
diverse levels, making it hard for teachers to plan effectively. Online tools address this by
allowing teachers to create leveled virtual classrooms, enhancing control over curriculum
planning (Iveta Pavlova, 2018). The Ministry of Education and Training in Vietnam (Nguyen
Kim Son, 2020) emphasizes the flexibility of online learning platforms, providing access to
educational materials, fostering interaction with teachers, promoting self-paced learning, and
enhancing digital literacy skills among students.

Another benefit of online learning and a better school-life balance is that you have the
opportunity to cultivate stronger self-control regarding healthy routines

(University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences, 2020). Not everyone finds pleasure in
fitting in exercise or yoga early in the morning or late at night. Hence, if you're studying
from home, you could opt for a midday run or participate in an online Pilates session.
Additionally, you could indulge in a brief nap, as studies (National Library of Medicine,
2019) indicate it can enhance memory and learning.

earning remotely affords you additional opportunities to prioritize self-nurturing.

Engaging in self-reflection, meditation, or yoga during this time can contribute to enhancing
your self-assurance and emotional acuity (University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences,
2020). In order to understand clearly the importance of healthy habits in your life, Debolina
Raja (2023) said in Part 2:

Encourage adolescents to engage in regular physical activities for better health. Data
shows a 19.7% obesity rate among 2-19-year-olds. Encourage activities like walks,
outdoor games, and sports, while limiting screen time. Establish a personalized
schedule, including gym sessions, to promote physical activity.

=>>> So not only can you save time studying online without affecting the quality, but you
can also practice many health exercises. Why not?

For students residing far from campus, commuting consumes a significant daily portion,
averaging 54.2 minutes (U.S Ozimek, 2018). Avoiding traffic and crowded transit saves valuable
time for work, leisure, and relationships. Studies show breaks enhance productivity and
creativity. Remote learning allows flexibility to operate during peak mental periods. Online
education addresses challenges of concentration in bustling classrooms, offering a platform for
quieter students to contribute, boosting self-assurance and optimism (Priyanka Gautam, 2020).

Focusing on and actively participating in online learning is essential for academic

success in virtual environments. Concentration during classes, minimizing distractions, and
active engagement through questions, discussions, and timely assignments aid
comprehension and retention. Effective time management and communication with
instructors and peers are vital. The education sector advocates for disease prevention
measures, promotes online learning, and supports students' morale and mental health,
emphasizing the benefits of home-based, focused learning and disease prevention (Covid 19
pandemic, 2020)

nother advantage of online education is its tendency to be more cost-effective than

traditional on-campus classes. Online classes often have lower tuition fees, and students
don’t need to spend money on location-related expenses. Pros of online learning in terms of
cost-effectiveness also include the potential to save money on textbooks and avoid
relocation costs (Kobi Cohen, 2023). The different types of assessments and activities we
offer will ensure that you have the opportunity to practice and gain the transferable skills
you need for your future career (University of Aberdeen, 2017). To be honest, learning by
iPad or computer is exactly learning how to use technical skills like typing text, using
computer access tools to submit homework, writing blogs and wikis, making self-recorded
videos, etc. Certainly, sooner or later, we have to know this skill.

But the more outstanding feature of online learning is that things like submitting
assignments, doing homework, etc. all take less time than offline learning, and we also find
it easy to use in the current school environment. So why many people hesitate about online
learning, why many people do not want to learn by this method, and whether offline
learning has something better than online learning.
Let's find out the drawbacks of online learning in Part 5.

2.2. Disadvatages of online learning

Online learning has become increasingly popular in recent years, especially with the rise of
technology and the internet. However, despite its many benefits, there are several
disadvantages that must be considered.

One major downside is the restricted engagement students experience with both instructors and
peers. Despite the presence of communication tools like chat rooms and discussion forums on
online learning platforms, they fall short of emulating the richness of in-person interaction. This
limitation can pose challenges in fostering a strong sense of community, a crucial element for
maximizing the benefits of your academic pursuits. As noted by author John Seely Brown in
his book The Social Life of Information (2000), Online learning is notably devoid of the
essential face-to-face interaction depth required to foster deep learning and understanding (p.
123). Without the physical presence of classmates and teachers, opportunities for
spontaneous discussions, collaboration, and immediate feedback may be limited. This can
lead to feelings of isolation and reduced motivation for some learners, impacting
theiroverall learning experience and academic performance.

Similarly, another possible disadvantage to consider is that online education can lead to
feelings of isolation, as students are not physically present in a classroom and may not have
the same opportunities to interact with other students and form social connections (Nicholas
Croft,Alice Dalton, and Marcus Grant, 2015). It’s important to keep this in mind and prepare
for it accordingly, but as the pandemic has taught us, there are ways to stay connected with
others even if you don’t meet in person (Kendra Cherry, 2023).

The last disadvantage of online learning is the potential for technical issues to disrupt the
learning process. As noted by author Karen Swan in her book Online Learning: Key
Concepts and Strategies (2016), "online learning requires a reliable internet connection and
access to a computer or mobile device. Technical issues such as slow internet speeds or
computer malfunctions can cause students to fall behind in their coursework" (p. 89). This
can be particularly problematic for students who are working on assignments with tight
deadlines and have decreased their mood.

Additionally, disparities in access to technology and digital literacy skills among students
further exacerbate these challenges, widening the digital divide and hindering equitable
educational opportunities (Sana Daud, 2023). Efforts to address technical issues through
infrastructure improvements, technical support services, and digital skills training are
essential for ensuring a smoother and more effective online learning experience for all
learners.

3. Conclusion

Indeed, In our rapidly changing world, various aspects, including online learning, embody
both benefits and drawbacks. The rise of online learning exemplifies technological progress,
serving individuals who value its advantages. However, it's essential to acknowledge that
traditional classroom settings may fit some learners better, and there's no obligation to
follow current trends. My objective is to stress the significance of carefully assessing the
strengths and weaknesses of online learning. This assessment empowers individuals to
optimize online learning for professional and educational integration. Understanding its nuances
enables informed choices aligned with personal learning styles, preferences, and goals,
maximizing educational experiences and outcomes.
